Brain training applications are nothing new but most of them tend to lean towards maths and logic problems: mental arithmetic, pattern recognition and so on.
I've been playing around with Elevate for the last couple of weeks which puts its emphasis on improving the way you communicate. Each day it gives you three games to play from five categories: Listening, Reading, Writing, Speaking and Maths.
The games test your grammar skills, your ability to process information and your vocabulary. The maths tests are also firmly placed in real world situations - discounting, tipping etc
The app is free if all you want to do is play the games it offers for the daily tests. You can subscribe for more features and games but it's not cheap.
Whether or not game-based learning tools like this can produce measurable improvements in your ability to communicate is uncertain but it seems a fun way to test out your skills
