I'm trying to build a new computer (my old one is in need of a serious upgrade.) Anyone have any ideas for a good computer build for between $500 and $800 dollars?

My son was into computer building for a while and Tom's Hardware (the site linked a couple posts above) was one of his go-to sites (he has since shifted to programming and is currently learning how to develop Android apps). Definitely add it to your bookmarks if you're into PC building.
I, on the other hand, have the technical skills to do it but just don't feel inclined to spend the time right now.

£500 isn't much for a gaming pc. Your looking at something like this Unless you already have parts your going to use.

I'm so leery of intergraded motherboards the nic card fails do you want to replace a motherboard of just the card component? same way with your sound card
are you building a windows machine or linux? have you considered ebay computers where you can upgrade and repair? do you plan to reuse your optical drive and hard drives
all theses components factor in finding a budget goal

Viven, so am I in regards to integrated motherboards. My parents had a computer where e sound chip on the motherboard failed and so the entire motherboard went out. And yeah, I plan to build a windows machine. There is alot to consider.
If your onboard sound or ethernet port fails on the motherboard it's not expensive to just purchase an addon card for either. I don't understand what is meant by motherboards being integrated. All motherboards come with what they come.
Building a computer is fairly easy these days. If you're going to choose your parts make sure you research all your parts and find out if they're compatible with each other and the OS you plan to use. You don't want to get a part that has a known problem with another part or an OS you plan to use.
Don't cheapout on the powersupply. Buy a cheap brand and you may end up paying for it if it fries your parts.
Building a tower PC is so easy no one should ever buy a premade computer. Its like a lego kit. The hard part is the parts. That just takes research and time. I've been building my computers for more than 10 years. If anyone needs help just pm me. I think the coolest part in my computer would be the CPU water block cooler. You can realy overclock the CPU with one. The dual video cards are cool too.
I think you are cutting yourself off if you do a windoze build. Reasoning ranges from security, hardware integration, future expansion, and knowledge base. Linux is far more flexible and it's limits are only constrained by the System operator/builder's aptitude and knowledge. Extensive Software is the only reason to consider a windows platform, most Linux systems are simply a lot more fun and invigorating to work with. Also the costs are far more reasonable. If you are going windows for gaming a person pretty much needs 16Gb merely to have the operating system run without a hiccup.
I started back in the days of DOS, give Linux a try, you won't ever regret it, especially when you fsck your first box.
The final aspect to understand is your system will end costing big bucks, I still remember My first major upgrade, 4MB of RAM, 328$.
