Just amazed that there isn't a thread for discussion of potential competition topics. Ideas you might have for future competitions, and discussion of said ideas.

I'm sure I'm not the only one who's sitting on ideas, but for what it's worth, I'd be interested in a competition on the subject of Reacquaintance. Basically any story where the main protagonists haven't seen each other for ten or more years.

Any other ideas out there?

This was discussed at length before, and because other members thought mods win because we know and discuss ideas, Nicki decided to no longer discuss them. She decides on her own and make the announcement, and guess what.... Mods still win.

I would support voicing ideas but I will continue to support Nicki not informing us of any upcoming competitions.

(Mods win and place in Comps for no other reason than that they are chosen as Mods because they are among the finest writers on site. So, no surprise if they do well in Comp.)

I was a Senior Mod here for YEARS. In that time, I entered several comps. I never even placed top-ten. (In fact once there was a top-eleven and I wasn't even in that either!) And I'm FUCKING good...

Comp decisions have FUCK ALL to do with who you are here, how long you've been with us, how active you are etc... Comp entries are treated as STAND ALONE pieces NO MATTER WHO WRITES THEM.

Happy to clear that one up. AGAIN!

Truth. So anyone else have any ideas for competitions? Nic will always decide, but it'd be fun to hear some ideas from members. We write; we should be full of unique and fun ideas!

Did you not pen a wee wedding story Steph?? As I recall, I did a wicked audio for it...

I think weddings would be a good topic though.

I thought the poetry comp was good last time, with lots of entries from people who normally wouldn't have taken part in something like that, so it was very inclusive... Maybe another poetry one but with trickier entry requirements? Or maybe a story with a poem in it, or even introducing it or something? (if that makes sense?)

I liked the Flash category too.

I like it when the authors put really clever takes on comp ideas and make them their own.

These days I find it hard to sit down and read a longer story so, shorter entries would be more desirable for me personally...

In saying that, I've not entered a comp or even written a thing in ages so I might well kill the thread...

I agree. I think it would boost participation. I see where people say they don't enter because of the elete authors here are so good that others feel entering is a waste of time.

I have NO IDEA if you've ever won or placed in Comp, Lady Senior Mod...

(I'd be MOST SURPRISED if you have not...)

And I GET THE IDEA of EXEMPTING past winners, (but I wonder then are we OVER-POLICING ourselves?) There are two sides to this issue.

One side says we favor Mods... (We seriously don't) If anything, (and THE TOP TABLE WILL CONFIRM IF YOU ASKED THEM...) mark the A-Team harder (Mod and non-Mod) to encourage the newer ones... But, (fuck it...) I'm a fucking comp judge and I CANNOT consider anything but the submission... I COULD NOT GIVE A FUCK WHO WROTE IT!!! I mark on merit.

The other side says we HAMMER the ones who WE KNOW kick ass and favor newer submissions. I think most judges, (and this is just my experience...) do that... But, at the end of the day, it's about the work. We simply CAN'T ignore quality work just because it's submitted by people we've asked to get involved because they are frankly fucking special at what they do...

The Comp judging process is FUCKING INVOLVED... It's a fucking Law Court, I'm not kidding! By the time we get to a top-ten list there have been FIGHTS! (I'm guessing I've been involved in perhaps the last TEN comps. Know how many I called absolutely correctly? NOT A FUCKING ONE!) Know how many decisions I've disagreed with? Not a single one...)

That's how it works...

YOU NEVER LOOK AT WHO WROTE THE PIECE!!!

There is a TRULY ORGANIC way to judge comp. Does it meet the brief? Is it presented well in terms of a READ, (syntactically and grammatically). Does it TICK all the boxes? Can you FEEL it? IS IT LUSH? If it IS then you're in...

Couldn't give A FUCK who you are... All I CARE ABOUT is THE READ... (I have to, AND CAN DEFEND, every single call...)

I LIKE the idea of a VIRGIN COMP and think that's an idea we should explore...

But PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE don't think we favor people! WE SIMPLY DON'T!!! ( I have BEAT DOWN people I LOVE!!!)

(I've have NOTEPADS full of notes on various Comp calls... EVERY STORY REVIEWED AND CONSIDERED AND THEN PLACED AND RATED!!! Submitted, considered, discussed... LIKE BEING IN COLLEGE!)

I HATE it when people say, "Oh, the Mods always win..." (Not least because I was a long serving Mod and I never won!!!) But they simply just don't.

Come in and BLOW US AWAY! (That would be the best thing EVER! And NON-MODS place!!!) Then they'd probably make you a Mod!!! *LAUGHS!* So we're FUCKED again!

If the idea is to make it a "new" talent comp, then why not even limit the time contestants have been members. Open to those who've been members no more than a year by the date of the comp deadline. Maybe even Liz will think the fresh meat angle will have that sexy zombie appeal.

i never ever have doubted the intergraty of the judging. actually, what i should have said is all past winners would be exempt, not all mods. *shrugs* just thought that it would be nice to have some sort of 'virgin' comp going. just a thought. and yeah, i've either placed or almost placed (got a few 4ths in some of the comps) with everything i've entered, with the exception of Ice. i actually intentionally sit some of them out for that very reason - that and i have no fucking ideas worth entering with. smile

You SO get it SPRITE... (This woman is a friend of mine BUT this is work... Worked ON TEAM for YEARS with her!!!)

To be CLEAR this person is among the BEST Mod's we've ever had... (FOR A VERY GOOD REASON...) We STILL fight like cats.

I love that those of us who CARE about the site are passionate and can talk about it...

As a newbie myself, I would think it counterproductive to eliminate the mods and previous winners. Isn't the reason Lush is set apart because of that quality. There are thousands of members and only one winner. The chances of a beginning author winning is impossible anyway. Competitions are for the best of best.
