My question is how did you get to meet your 'friends'.
I'm a shy 60 + guy who wants to meet like minded guys.
I don't like the craiglist format, it seems too pushy,not my style at all.

I am not sure how it is in the UK but in the states Craiglist is one of the ways to put yourself out there and be available. You could look for other websites that meet your interests such as Gay sites or bisexual and other dating sites. Hopes this helps.
