I saw this story a few days ago, and as a rider, I was seriously impressed by that horse.
It's notoriously dangerous to ride, even at just a fast trot, on pavement or asphalt. Asphalt and pavement are "slippery", and shod horses can and do lose their footing and bam! come down. Having 1700 lbs. (or more) of horse land on your leg or torso is not something that generally ends well for the rider.
Even just going at an easy walk on paved roads makes me very nervous. The fact that this guy a) recognised that there was something going on b) saddled up and then c) rode the horse fast enough to lasso the the would-be thief speaks very much to his abilities and the bombproof nature of his horse.
