How to remove friends and block

I've never understood why it's so difficult to do either of these things and am again trying to see where to do both.

If I hover over their name in the friends list, there is no remove friend and no block option. There is the options below. Where do I remove them and block them? It would be so much easier if on their profile page if there was just a block button and remove friend button.

Click on YOUR avatar ... Go to "settings" ... Click on "friends" ... Click on the n'er -do -well's avatar and you will see a drop box with options ... You can then "block" or "remove friend" etc. ... Click on "remove" and they will disappear from your "friends list" ( I'm using a touchy iPhone and had to click several times on the avatar for those options to show up)

This must be done from / through "settings" ... Can't be done directly from your page.
