The man is a tremendous talent. He has had a huge impact on modern culture.

At first, I wasn't sure how I felt about this, because it isn't exactly literature. But then I looked up the categories for the Nobel Prize and there's only one in the arts.

So...congratulation BD! What a poet!

Apparently the decision was so contentious, it delayed the announcements an entire week (probably just an excuse to get more free corporate hospitality! ).

I see nothing wrong with rewarding poetry with a Nobel. And it's thoroughly apparent to me that Little Bobby Zimmerman has been writing poetry.

This makes me smile ? Embracing talent and evolving. Our fast living culture opens their eyes to beauty. Shame narrow mindedness and divisions exist, but hey. In reality whatever floats your boat... Whatever form. How did trump do with the peace prize? Genuine question I'm to lazy to google when grinning ?

Blowin' in the Wind
Bob Dylan
How many roads must a man walk down
Before you call him a man?
How many seas must a white dove sail
Before she sleeps in the sand?
Yes, and how many times must the cannon balls fly
Before they're forever banned?
The answer, my friend, is blowin' in the wind
The answer is blowin' in the wind
Yes, and how many years can a mountain exist
Before it's washed to the sea?
Yes, and how many years can some people exist
Before they're allowed to be free?
Yes, and how many times can a man turn his head
And pretend that he just doesn't see?
The answer, my friend, is blowin' in the wind
The answer is blowin' in the wind
Yes, and how many times must a man look up
Before he can see the sky?
Yes, and how many ears must one man have
Before he can hear people cry?
Yes, and how many deaths will it take 'till he knows
That too many people have died?
The answer, my friend, is blowin' in the wind

He is one of the most poetic songwriters of our time (the only other one I can think of who is in the same league is Leonard Cohen, who is an award-winning poet and novelist here at home) and I have no issue with him winning the literature Nobel. A well-deserved honour and I hope this is a sign that the Nobel committee are broadening their definition of "literature" a bit. It usually goes to some highbrow, critic-friendly novelist (even this year, the pre-announcement favorites were Don DeLillo and Haruki Murakami). Bravo, Bob, and I hope you've got a few years and songs still left in you.

More Bob, this time live and with company:

Of course, Dylan was big influence on Springsteen as a writer, one of many songwriters who've drunk from that well.

the answer is actually 42. not really impressed by his maths skills.

You can’t truly call yourself peaceful unless you are capable of violence. If you’re not capable of violence, you’re not peaceful. You’re harmless.

You're right, Rachel. Bobby never read Douglas Adams.

This is my other favorite (No math):

Well, they'll stone ya when you're trying to be so good
They'll stone ya just a-like they said they would
They'll stone ya when you're tryin' to go home
Then they'll stone ya when you're there all alone
But I would not feel so all alone
Everybody must get stoned.

Well, they'll stone ya when you're walkin' 'long the street
They'll stone ya when you're tryin' to keep your seat
They'll stone ya when you're walkin' on the floor
They'll stone ya when you're walkin' to the door
But I would not feel so all alone
Everybody must get stoned.

They'll stone ya when you're at the breakfast table
They'll stone ya when you are young and able
They'll stone ya when you're tryin' to make a buck
They'll stone ya and then they'll say "good luck"
Tell ya what, I would not feel so all alone
Everybody must get stoned.

Well, They'll stone you and say that it's the end
Then they'll stone you and then they'll come back again
They'll stone you when you're riding in your car
They'll stone you when you're playing your guitar
Yes, but I would not feel so all alone
Everybody must get stoned.

Well, they'll stone you when you walk all alone
They'll stone you when you are walking home
They'll stone you and then say you are brave
They'll stone you when you are set down in your grave
But I would not feel so all alone
Everybody must get stoned.

Happy Friday!

Of any Artist / Lyricist to get the Nobel for literature, Bob wouldn't be my first choice. I would think Elvis Costello, Paul Westerberg, Patti Smith, or Leonard Cohen would be equal or better choices. Others can't be included because they're deceased.

That said, The last great Dylan song (from the 1970's)

Tangled up in Blue

Early one mornin' the sun was shinin'
I was layin' in bed
Wondrin' if she'd changed at all
If her hair was still red
Her folks they said our lives together
Sure was gonna be rough
They never did like
Mama's homemade dress
Papa's bank book wasn't big enough
And I was standin' on the side of the road
Rain fallin' on my shoes
Heading out for the east coast
Lord knows I've paid some dues
Gettin' through
Tangled up in blue

She was married when we first met
Soon to be divorced
I helped her out of a jam I guess
But I used a little too much force
We drove that car as far as we could
Abandoned it out west
Split up on a dark sad night
Both agreeing it was best
She turned around to look at me
As I was walkin' away
I heard her say over my shoulder
We'll meet again some day
On the avenue
Tangled up in blue

I had a job in the great north woods
Working as a cook for a spell
But I never did like it all that much
And one day the axe just fell
So I drifted down to New Orleans
Where I was looking for to be employed
Workin' for a while on a fishin' boat
Right outside of Delacroix
But all the while I was alone
The past was close behind
I seen a lot of women
But she never escaped my mind
And I just grew
Tangled up in blue

She was workin' in a topless place
And I stopped in for a beer
I just kept lookin' at the side of her face
In the spotlight so clear
And later on as the crowd thinned out
I's just about to do the same
She was standing there in back of my chair
Said to me, Don't I know your name?
I muttered somethin' under my breath
She studied the lines on my face
I must admit I felt a little uneasy
When she bent down to tie the laces
Of my shoe
Tangled up in blue

She lit a burner on the stove
And offered me a pipe
I thought you'd never say hello, she said
You look like the silent type
Then she opened up a book of poems
And handed it to me
Written by an Italian poet
From the thirteenth century
And everyone of them words rang true
And glowed like burnin' coal
Pourin' off of every page
Like it was written in my soul
From me to you
Tangled up in blue

I lived with them on Montague Street
In a basement down the stairs
There was music in the cafes at night
And revolution in the air
Then he started into dealing with slaves
And something inside of him died
She had to sell everything she owned
And froze up inside
And when finally the bottom fell out
I became withdrawn
The only thing I knew how to do
Was to keep on keepin' on
Like a bird that flew
Tangled up in blue

So now I'm goin' back again
I got to get to her somehow
All the people we used to know
They're an illusion to me now
Some are mathematicians
Some are carpenters' wives
Don't know how it all got started
I don't know what they're doin' with their lives
But me, I'm still on the road
Headin' for another joint
We always did feel the same
We just saw it from a different point
Of view

I posted the video for Tangled Up in BLue over in Rumplations (in the The Pub forum). Agree with you on Cohen, not sure about the others. Still, I think it is Dylan's influence as much as his actual body of work (though that is a big factor, too) that is being rewarded. Even today, we see young artists covering Dylan and claiming him as an influence. All the ones that you name are influential, to be sure, but I'm not sure to the degree he has been. It also opens the door to someone like Cohen being named down the road (though Leonard has his poetry and novels so could have been rewarded on that basis a long time ago).

The best news I heard all week, after the suggestion - from the latest polls - that Donald the Groper is toast!

... beautiful and powerful ... haunting ... at this stage of life, my theme song perhaps ...
