Anyone else watching this gem? I swear HBO can do no wrong.

Now, I've never seen the original with Yul Brynner, but I'm hooked. The dynamic of how far you can push AI has always been fascinating and I love the inherent problems their creating with said AIs gaining a form of human-esque memory and emotional processing.

And the casts is absolutely loaded. Hopkins. Ed Harris. Jeffery Wright. Thandie Newton who's still as gorgeous as ever.

And... Evan Rache Wood. There's just something... About her.

And the cinematography. Just gorgeous. A parallel of sleek futurism and the Wild West.

Highly recommend.

i am, yes. it's mesmerizing, honestly - the pace is slow, but it's perfect that way, and i love the concept and how the hosts are slowly wakening and evolving and, of course, ERW is awesome. it's eerie when Bernard tells her to talk with emotion during his 'interviews'. Everyone else is really well cast as well. it's kind of cool, every time someone new is introduced, you're never quite sure if they are a host or a guest. I thought Teddy was a guest up until he tried to shoot the man in black in epi 1

I usually don't like shows like this, however I'm enjoying this. I can't imagine what will happen.

My question to you...Ed Harris' character is a robot right? My mother claims he's a human but he's not right?

It's very interesting and each week holds my interest.

my take on it is he's human, a guest, one who's been visiting the park since it opened. 99% sure i'm right. smile

But.....in one episode. Delores shoots him several times and he doesn't die.

In the write up for the show it says he's a robot. I think towards the end of this season we will find out. Here is information I pulled.

====================================================================================

The premiere of HBO’s Westworld was phenomenal. This could be HBO’s new Game of Thrones. But one of the top questions on viewers’ mind is exactly who Ed Harris’ character. This article will contain spoilers through the premiere, along with theories about the future of the show.

Here’s what you need to know.

Ed Harris is very similar to the “Gunslinger” character from the original Westworld movie. According to what we know so far, Harris’ “The Man in Black” has been visiting Westworld — and Dolores — for 30 years. He has no qualms about torturing hosts in the most horrific ways. He apparently views them as complete non-entities, but he likely is acting out deeper, sociopathic tendencies. This is what we’re led to believe in the first episode.

But fans have other theories.

One of those theories revolves around the original movie on which the series is based, Westworld, which was written and directed by Michael Crichton. The movie was made in the early 1970s and this new version is just loosely based on it. (Spoilers for the original movie follow.)

In the original movie, a Gunslinger was the main attraction. He was a robot programmed to be a rival cowboy. So many fans think that Ed Harris’ character might eventually be revealed to be a robot who is trying to figure out the nature of his existence — a host who has already become self-aware. However, that theory does have a few flaws. First, Teddy couldn’t hurt him or shoot him. That prohibition seems only in place when it comes to hosts-against-humans, and Harris’ character knew that. It’s possible that if Harris really is a robot-gone-bad, then perhaps his part of the programming made certain that other hosts couldn’t hurt him. But if he were a host, wouldn’t he have gone rogue? And wouldn’t management know exactly where he is and stop him? So, he likely is human, unless he’s a robot who is so smart that he’s managed to evade detection.

There’s also a theory that he’s from a rival company and is trying to figure out how the hosts’ programming works so they can make their own, similar attraction. Or perhaps he’s part of an attempt to take over the company from Anthony Hopkins’ character.

In one part of the trailer, The Man in Black says: “What if I told you, I’m here to set you free?” That seems really strange, considering how he’s torturing the hosts. But from previews, it appears that he is looking for some hidden meta-game within-the-game. It could be as simple as Harris’ character becoming tired of the game and hoping there’s another game “hidden” in the code. He might just be plain old crazy.

Or perhaps he believes that enough pain will free the hosts and make them self-aware. Or he may think something is hidden in their programming that hints at a more sinister reason for this whole theme park, and he’s trying to get at the heart of that. A conversation among management in the middle of the episode does convey the idea that something deeper is going on and there’s another reason for all of this besides simply making a fun, profitable entertaining park.

This was my feeling and backed up in a review of the first episode from either the AV club or the EW. I can't remember which, but I think the author had talked with the creators and the intent was for the audience to very much be aware that Ed Harris' character IS in fact human.

I think that was even confirmed in episode by the douchey "scenario writer" who gave his pitch to Hopkins.

It mentioned they basically let him do w/e the fuck he wants considering how long he's been coming to the park.

yes, but that makes sense if he's human - the hosts can 'kill' other host/bots, but they can't hurt humans. that means that, as a human, Dolores couldn't hurt him, but if he was a robot, she could. smile

Time will tell. This show is very exciting. My favorite character is Delores. The acting is incredible in this series.

I hope people will like and it will continue to another season.

I think she'll be able to going forward.

Poor James Marsden though.

Fucker keeps dying and dying in ever more brutal ways.

I am hooked as well, but what a horrible premise if you think too much about it. People are willing to pay 40k a day to do anything they want. Murder, , torture, etc.

Ed Harris is human is my take as well. Last week another guest says to him, "I'm a big fan of your foundation, Sir" or something similar. Harris' character tells him to shut up, he's on vacation.

I have no idea where any of this is going, but I can see it playing out over several season. It remains to be seen if they can keep up interest over a longer time frame. People are going to want more answers.

I also think Anthony Hopkins killed his partner and wonder who is the representative that the company already sent? I'm thinking maybe one of the guests who are coworkers and run into Delores. I have watched each episode more than once. You can gleam things you didn't see on the first pass.

I hope this one lasts, but won't think too much about what people are really capable of and want to do if there were no consequences to their actions.

This show just gets better and better.

I think (I said this on some other thread) that the show is kinda about PTSD, as the robots have subconscious access to those previous memories of and violence and death before their brains are wiped. That the truly horrifying aspect of the set-up.

Dollhouse (LOVED that show) had a similar thing going on.

Ed Harris can't be human because he can survive a gunshot (he could be wearing a bulletproof vest, I suppose). I think Jeffrey Wright is a robot though. His conversations with Evan Rachael Wood are the center of the show. Amazing acting by both.

Wouldn't it be something, if we find out that Anthony Hopkins is also a robot.

With this show, anything is possible.

It's very interesting and very different.

Well, Ed Harris is definitely human, it turns out.

Is he the co-founder of the park who disappeared?

nope. That's Arnold, and he's dead. or a ghost. Or inside Dolores.

Why can't Ed Harris be Arnold? Ed talks about opening the bots during the early days of the park.

I loved the big orgy palace in the last episode. I can't wait to get the full story on Ed Harris' character. Why does he want to figure out the maze so bad? I'm wondering if he was somehow connected to Arnold. I wonder if Arnold is really dead or possibly has been re-incarnated into a robot that we'll eventually meet. Possibly Arnold is being held prisoner by Dr. Ford. I want to see Delores have a full on nekkid steamy sex scene with Madame Maave.

Not so much a horrible premise, but a visceral, scathing criticism of the human condition and of the things we're grown numb to. I was listening to NPR on the way back from class the other day and they had creators Jonathan Nolan and his wife Joy on. They talked about that numbness as a comparison to the world of video games and the sheer number based on debauchery, violence, etc. And we consume them. I consume those types of games, though I hardly play much nowadays.

With Westworld, that video game becomes more starkly and disturbingly real to where, while watching, you wonder about all the horrible things we all bury deep within the subconscious. The most basic of base instinct if you will. And from ancestors thousands and hundreds of thousands of years ago, a lot of that was built on violence and power in more...primitive manners. Which is why I love this show.

It thinks.

*Notes.

I'm starting to notice there are indeed different timelines on this show and I'm wondering if "William" is in the more PRESENT timeline, or if he's sometime in the past and is a younger version of a character we're met.

Because we have William and Delores with Lawrence. And we also had Ed Harris (TMIB) with Lawrence. They certainly can't be occurring simultaneously.

Is William The Man in Black?

There are a bunch of theories out there about the apparent timelines the show has. I'll need to dig into them a bit more.

Fun show that seems to be a big complicated game of "Where's Arnold". Incredible performances by actors and actresses who should receive Emmys for "Best Naked Characters in a Non-Porn Production" Keeps me guessing and love all the nods to the original WestWorld movies. HBO lives up to it's Home Box Office moniker.

The Big Orgy Palace simply reminded me or Spartacus or Rome. Seemed out of place to me actually.

But here's what's interesting, curious as to how many men thinking a woman is ok... 40k a day just to fuck like they want to. Pretty interesting to consider the male pysche

The last two episodes were just awesome. So since Ford has been creating his own hosts without anyone else's knowledge, throw out the rules on what a host is capable of. It all depends upon their own programming. Was that new host body being created in Ford's secret lab, by any chance a duplicate of Theresa Cullen?

What I wonder though, is the bathroom conditions. Since it is an old west setting, would they have to use primitive outhouses or have nice modern flushable, sanitary toilets and bathrooms? If I were paying 40K I'd still want my twice a day hot shower, a clean toilet and plenty of Charmin. You know they didn't have Charmin in the old west. Not much paper was available either.

I agree with Buz, the last two episodes were amazing!

I still think Anthony Hopkins is a robot too but will see! Maybe Arnold created him too!
