It may not have hit the national news yet but a bridge on I-85 collapsed during rush hour this evening. This is a major highway that goes through the middle of the city. There was a raging fire under the bridge and the heat melted the concrete. It is in the midtown/buckhead area just a few miles from downtown. It's going to take weeks to repair. So far nobody has been reported hurt. There were fireman under the bridge fighting the fire but were pulled out within a minute of the collapse...thank god!
It looked like PVC pipes or PVC building material caught fire under the overpass. I was watching Channel 2 when that section of I-85 collapsed. Damn!
We're already the what? #2 ranked worst traffic nightmare city in the nation. Can you imagine what morning rush hour traffic will be like tomorrow? I am so glad I will miss that section. But the spill over as everything is detoured will be horrendous. And hell, I-85 is one of the nation's busiest interstates. That will push more through traffic onto I-285 (officially the most dangerous interstate in the USA).
I take backstreets to work anyhow cause I can, and I don't live far from my office. I do use Piedmont a lot and a bunch of spill over will be pushed onto it.
