So, Charlie Jane Anders is seriously on a roll right now. Won both the Nebula and Locus awards for best novel, two of the biggest honours in s-f, and is up for the Hugo for best novel as well, which would give her a literary hat trick. All for her first full-length novel, All the Birds in the Sky, which I am currently reading (she does have a Hugo for Best Novelette from 2012 for another work).
Anyhow, her major gig up until last year was founder and co-editor (with her partner Annalee Newitz) of s-f/fantasy news site io9.com and she wrote the following essay for that site on her early efforts at writing.
