Topic: Announcing the Winners of our "The Moment You Knew" Story Competition
Posted: 11 Mar 2019 08:50

I alreasy gushed at leangth over on the Rump's thread about how happy it makes me so see Cyn grab the top ring of this contest. She's so good, and working in an under-valued genre for such a long time. Lovely to see her labors rewarded with a first place win. Congrats to Tangerine and Wannabe too, and to all the rest of the top ten. Nice to see Ayla break into the winners list, her writing has been on my radar for a little while now, and it's great to see her talent recognised.

This was a great contest. Nice way to start the day.

Well said. She's kind of like a soft force of nature. The kind that sneaks up on you when you're paying attention to something else. The fact that she's in such formidable company on this list of winners and runners-up only makes her victory that much sweeter.

Congratulations to all.

As the author of a grand total of one story so far on Lush, I have a couple of questions for the great writers that exist here......

1) What motivates you to write?

2) How do you find the time to write?

I thoroughly enjoyed writing my first story, but between having a job and a life once I get home from that job, I find it very difficult to carve out the time to work on my next story.

Your thoughts will be greatly appreciated.....

Reese

I write more out of habit than anything else, so probably not a very example to go by. But like most things, it's better not to wait until you "find" time. It's better if you can "make" time. Try setting aside a half hour or hour (every day if you can) and just sit down and write. But it's really important to keep from stressing about it. The act of writing includes staring at a blank screen believing no idea will ever strike your mind ever again as long as you life, or gazing out the window with your jaw hanging open wishing the birds wouldn't poop on your car so much, or getting up and walking around the room while some movie no one else can see is running on a loop in your mind. It's a good thing to accept that all of those things are just as much part of writing as typing words.

Your enthusiasm for writing is enviable, and I'm looking forward to seeing what you've been writing.

Topic: Should Ralph Northam Resign?
Posted: 05 Feb 2019 07:16

This were I go back and forth. He should have waited before addressing the situation. It made him look like an idiot and he did lose credibility.

I want to give him the benefit of the doubt that he grew and changed over the years and learned more about humanity. I don't understand this need to crucify people for having a past, making mistakes or poor judgement. In a way demanding he resign, signifies (to me) that we are not willing to acknowledge that as we grow and experience more of the world, our beliefs and views often change. No doubt those pictures are disturbing to see, but is that a reason to demand he resign?

I think he lost the benefit of the doubt when he waffled as to even remembering if that was him. At the same time, I agree so much with your sentiment, and feel we're much too quick to crucify public figures over their private lives. A Klan hood is another thing entirely, though. Expecting him to have the foresight to recognize how much trust he's lost and resign doesn't strike me as crucifixion, though. Yes, people can change, but it doesn't mean you get to grow up to be a leader. I have more respect for the former Aryan gang guys who are getting their Nazi tats covered up. The commitment is admirable. Still, I have a hard time understanding how anyone is capable of going there in the first place.

Topic: Should Ralph Northam Resign?

Of course he should step down. Dressing up in black face or a Klan outfit is so far beyond a mere lapse in ethics as to be sickening. "Gee, I'm sorry, oh wait a minute maybe that wasn't me" is hardly an adequate response. Who gives a fuck what party he belongs to. His credibility as a statesperson is shot.

Did someone say crime scene?

I'm already intrigued...

Does someone have a thing for badass gingers, perhaps?

As a public service to fellow coffee aficionados, browncoffee has had another apparent lapse in judgement in collaborating on a sordid little piece of flash erotic with another author who shall remain shameless. I mean nameless. The hopelessly addicted are invited to go to... https://www.lushstories.com/stories/flash-erotica/-crime-scene.aspx

Got bored so I wrote a flash https://www.lushstories.com/stories/flash-erotica/-fiction-m-.aspx but I was still bored so I did a brand new collaboration with the most amazing writer ever:

https://www.lushstories.com/stories/cheating/-lost-identity-.aspx

Still can't believe he even wrote with me! <img src="/images/emoticons/baglady.gif" alt="Fugly">

I'd say whomever this individual is was lucky to have such an excellent writing partner.

Topic: Why don't you like poetry?
Posted: 20 Jan 2019 10:08

Here's something TS Eliot said about it: "Poetry is not a turning loose of emotion, but an escape from emotion; it is not the expression of personality, but an escape from personality. But, of course, only those who have personality and emotions know what it means to want to escape from these things."

It's nice to see people posting that they like poetry, but most people don't and I think it's because (at least here in the United Snakes) most people are taught to hate it in school. It's rare that most people end up with teachers who don't really like or even get poetry themselves and it ends up making a lot of people feel inadequate if they don't "get" what they're supposed to "get", like poetry is this arcane, coded message intended for an elite few. A number of other posters have said as much already.

LYFBUZ nailed another good point. The whole concept of Western education mainly focuses on going through the canon chronologically from much earlier periods, laying a practically foreign language that doesn't speak to students. If we introduced young people to poetry that had more to say to them about where they are in the world it would very likely trigger more interest in the old school stuff.

A poet I knew used to say it's only poetry, it's not about saving anyone's soul. He also used to say since no one's buying it, at least no one can ever accuse you of selling out.

Topic: Which improvements or features would you like to see added?
Posted: 03 Dec 2018 19:35

From the old blind fart behind the bar at, Rumplations: Lush's leading den of literary iniquity and lost hopes of profitable publication, just one question regarding Frank Lee's suggestion. Why 1500 words?

BTW, it being Tuesday, there's a special going on over there featuring salted peanuts and beer. ;)

<img src="/images/emoticons/glasses10.gif" alt="glasses8">

1500 words is still something that can be read in a "flash", and still provide a little variety for readers. It certainly doesn't mean every story has to be 1500 words. But as a reader, when I read something that's around this length or less it feels a little disappointing when you're settling in for a bigger story. As a writer, if I were to write something that was, say, 12 or 1300 words it feels a little weird to submit it as a full length story.

I'll have to make a point of stopping by the bar one of these days. Do I have to have a valid ID to get in?

Trump is nothing but an embarrassing failure in every respect. EVERY respect. Pretending there's anything but random attention-whoring behind any of the toxic sludge that spews out of his vile puss-hole that serves as a mouth is a waste of time. He's the most dangerous mistake America has made since Hiroshima.

Rosalia found the dog right around mid-afternoon a couple miles past the iron scorpion. The studio was in the garage stall of an old service station.
