Topic: DirtyMartini.. Alan... Did he pass away?
Posted: 14 Mar 2017 11:59

Alan was a real gentleman. His good humor and sense of friendliness never faltered, and a look through the forums here are proof of how much time and attention he put forth to help others. He embodied the best qualities of not only what Lush is, but of human beings. His loss is not simply untimely, but profound.

You know there's no such thing as "Judeo-Christian" beliefs, right?

This is the main problem of dealing with religious critics - they ignore all the nuances between different sects that make big differences in what different people believe in.

Take, for example, "Thou shall not lie."

Catholics believe humanity is universally graceful.

Protestants believe humanity is chosen by God to be elected for salvation or not.

Jews believe they're chosen by God to bring light unto nations.

If someone says that another is a good person, that statement might be interpreted as a lie or not based on which underlying belief we're talking about.

I'm seriously into all kinds of sects. It's why I joined Lush in the first place.

I have to say...I am so completely embarrassed to have ever supported, especially admitting to having supported that imbecile in the, oh, I don't know where he is..The White House? Im over him so bad, can't we impeach his ass yet?

And before anyone says it, yes, I did vote for him, but come on...I can not endorse this ego maniacal shit head anymore.

<img src="/forum/images/emoticons/hiding.gif" alt="hiding">

No need for you to feel embarrassed. Your statement is reassuring, actually, and it just goes to show that your critical thinking skills are in good shape. Having people who voted for him speak out the way you have is more valuable than anything. Thank you for speaking your mind...clearly and sincerely. One of the saddest things about what's going on right now is how so many people, mostly Trump supporters, it seems, mistake this as being a liberal vs conservative problem, but when people like Dick Cheney and John McCain come out and identify the clear danger of Trump's wildly irresponsible behavior then it places everything in a very different perspective.

Topic: IMMIGRATION .... the elephant in the room
Posted: 29 Jan 2017 04:26

Okay Hayley, let's see if I can get back to your original post - and please bear in mind these are my views as I see the situation. Yours can, and probably do, vary.

Immigration is the backbone of the United States. We are all - every single solitary person in the U.S. - either a direct immigrant, or the descendant of one. There is no such animal as a "true" American. Even the "Native Americans" migrated here over the Bering Land Bridge. This being said, I wholeheartedly believe in immigration. However illegal immigration is different. These are the people who come over on the sly, take jobs and do not pay taxes.

>>>> HOWEVER <<<<

There are ways to do things and procedures and policies in how we accomplish things in this country. It makes little sense to crack down on illegal activity by breaking the law yourself. And DJT has done just that. His rampant use of E.O.'s and his flagrant dismissal of the law of the land has been the stuff of much controversy, even before becoming *choke* President. And at least in one case, he's being called on it. The problem for America is that he has surrounded himself with spineless "yes men" who are afraid of him and so are letting Richie Rich have his way.

A wall along the border of Mexico is a rather bold step and I doubt even that will stop illegals - they haven't been able to even slow down the drug trade, the human trafficking, or any other criminal activities. And even if the wall was built, what's to keep people from swimming around it? The way to stop illegal immigration is at the job site. heavily fine or shut down businesses that hire them. No work, no illegals. They have to eat and can't eat any better here than they can in their own country without money.

Now there is a way for a law-abiding immigrant to become an American citizen legally and that process needs to be shortened. I hear tell it can take 2 years or longer just for the background checks to be done! So those who wish to do things the right way run the risk of being sent back before they can get their chance. And this whole "round 'em up and head 'em out" cowboy approach violates even our own Constitution - see the part about unreasonable search and seizure and deprivation of life liberty or property.

DJT Needs to take a step back and a look around. He needs to see the people he is representing for who they are. He needs to come down from his little ivory Trump tower and get amongst the people, talk to the people, LISTEN to the people, and listen to his own advisers. Or he can read his history book - specifically the little "incident" the French had in 1789... that little French Revolution thing.

I agree with most everything you say, and completely with the sentiment, at least, but there are always a few points most people aren't aware of. The most common misconception is that undocumented immigrants don't pay taxes. 11.6 billion in state and local taxes is the estimate for last year, which doesn't include federal revenues and the contributions to Social Security by people who will never collect any return. There are plenty of immigrant workers both documented and undocumented who are not paying taxes, but generally that's because they work for sweatshops who are paying them under the table and breaking pretty much every labor law on the books.

Also, depending on what country/region you're from, it can take well over ten years to obtain a visa to come live in the US. I know of people who have been waiting 12 years. To be fair, it would be much faster if they were coming from another country.

I don't necessarily believe in open borders, but I don't believe we have an immigration "problem". We do, however, have a severe problem with education, critical thinking and basic, human decency.

Trump wants to clamp down on these "Sanctuary Cities", And try to remove illegal immigrants from your country, therefore creating more jobs for Americans. Why is that a bad thing? If people wish to seek asylum there are proper channels for that. Every illegal immigrant that is working in your country is a reason Americans complain about there not being enough jobs. You can't have it both ways.

Even Reagan and Bush understood that immigration is good for the economy. Here's what happened in Georgia when they passed laws to discourage undocumented immigrants from going there. http://www.forbes.com/sites/realspin/2012/05/17/the-law-of-unintended-consequences-georgias-immigration-law-backfires/#34eda42c404a

Depending on what region/country you're from, it can take well over ten years to get a legal residency visa. The US immigration service is overworked and understaffed, and several years ago, around the time it was reorganized to fall under the umbrella of the Dept of Homeland Security, it became a fee-based agency, meaning it operates on fees collected from visa and citizenship applicants, not tax revenue. Undocumented immigrants contribute somewhere around 20 billion dollars a year (depending on which estimate you go by) to federal coffers. This doesn't include what's being paid into the Social Security system by people who will never be able to collect later on. State taxes and the economic impact on local business is another consideration.

American jobs didn't disappear because immigrants come here willing to work the shittiest jobs American workers don't want anyway, and work harder for lower pay than American workers. But this isn't uniquely American by any means. It's like this in every country on the planet, even some of the poorest ones. American jobs have been outsourced on a wholesale scale because business "leaders" like Trump spread their legs and gave it up to China, for the most part.

The biggest part of the problem here, though, doesn't have much to do with economy or politics. It's that Americans are typically in love with bombastic bumper-sticker slogans while the complexities of actual critical thinking just make most people scratch their asses and frown.

Pence: "We're taking some heat on this wall thing."

Trump: "Hey, the less immigrants we let in, the better."

Pence: "The fewer."

Trump: "Shhh, don't call me that in public yet."

Trump said that we would build a wall and the the Mexicans would pay for it.

Right now, half of the Republicans should be screaming that he lied about how we were going to pay for it and the other half should be complaining that half of the wall is really going to be a fence. Both should be screaming that he lied. At least that how it would have gone under the Obama administration (had he suggested something so dumb).

Of course, there's already a fence that runs the length of the border...about 30 feet high and topped with razor wire, which is why there are already the tunnels you mentioned in an earlier post. Trump's wall rhetoric is just more of his tedious, narcissistic gonad wagging.
