Topic: How to deal with bilingual text?
Posted: 30 Apr 2014 15:45

The story was actually written as a request by two Italian girls I know. I had hoped to be able to keep the Italian for a bit of foreign flavour. Lush admin asked for a translation to accompany story but made no mention of not being able to use Italian in the story. I guess I am going to have to supply a translation, which looks crappy or rewrite it out for the most part.

Her friend's eyes widen as she mumbles quickly, in Italian, to her friend. The words flow so fast that the only word I make out is 'Vancouver'. She looks at me before continuing in her mother tongue. I can only observe and hope that she'll explain once she's done...
This sounds best I think. Thanks.

I have a story that uses Italian in places. Two characters Italian. To post story I must provide translations.

Her friends eyes widen, "Hanno detto che ci davano un passaggio per Vancouver. Hanno mentito. Ci hanno abbandonato qui. E dopo ...", says speaking Italian to he friend. She looks at me. I obviously have no idea what she has just said except for Vancouver. "...... lasciate qui cazzo. Sapevo che non avremmo dovuto fidarci. Ed ora cosa facciamo?" she continues.

So how do I go about inserting the translation?

Topic: do you believe in God?
Posted: 28 Apr 2014 20:05

No, I do not believe if an intelligent creator. Which I think is one definition of God. Something kicked started the creation of the universe from the timeless singularity it was born of. But I do not think it is an intelligent cause. Maybe an inevitable one but not intelligent. More likely to be revealed in a particle accelerator or an epiphany by someone like Stephen Hawkings on his death bed. God is the ultimate unified theory. Encompassing physics, metaphysics and philosophy.

Topic: What if Ukraine join NATO?
Posted: 28 Apr 2014 14:07

After Russia has successfully annexed the eastern part of the Ukraine it is possible the remaining areas might apply to join NATO. This taking of UN observers could draw the UN in militarily. An old fashioned peacekeeping force could move in. But would not have NATO troops so training and such may be lacking to do a proper job. Russia also has it's veto on the security council.

I was working just like most people. Happened to be watching when 2nd plane hit. We went in and out of office with tv but work went on. There was no crying or anything.

This OP is directed at Yanks I think. For much of the rest of the world... Tragic yes! But in the big scheme of things it was just a bitch slap. 2500 people dead! Drop in the bucket. Americans killed more Americans that year. This was more an attack against the pride and hubris of the USA. Don't get me wrong, I deplore terrorist attacks against soft civilian targets. Those 2500 people were innocent and did not deserve to die.

I am Canadian and never have to worry about healthcare. I had a heart attack 9 years ago. It didn't cost me one red cent. Getting stitches from a hockey game, free. Pinched nerve, free. Prescription do cost though. Free is only for doctor's actual services. This applies to ALL Canadian citizens and residents.

Universal healthcare was first developed in Canada during the 30's depression. Doctors quickly bought in to the system. Their big reason was because they did not have to chase down bill payments. Someone defaults on a medical bill, you have to send it to collection. This cost money as they take a huge cut. Payment was fast and complete.

Is our system perfect. NO! Is it better than the USA? YES?

You want the money to pay for a decent national healthcare system. Take a few billion out of defence spending. They won't miss a few billion. The forces can piss that away in a few days.

I'm sorry but I can't rap my head around not wanting a universal healthcare system that does not turn anybody away for lack of funds. If my government is going to tax the fuck out of me, I want something for it. Me personally, not some oil company raping the natives of their resources.

Right wing ideology and plain selfishness are the root cause, IMO, for the USA's healthcare issues. Our's are based on plain government inefficiency. What a normal person can accomplish with 100$ would cost any government 1000$.

Topic: The Gun Control Debate Thread.
Posted: 27 Apr 2014 23:54

I'm Canadian. Our per capita gun ownership is close to the USA. The old NRA crap about only criminals have guns in Canada is just that crap! We own guns just as many times as Americans. What we don't have is handguns. What we have is a bureaucracy that makes you jump naked backward through flaming hoops to get a gun. The US has 10 times our population. You would expect 10 times as many murders. No, you have 30 times.

The right to bear arms is an antiquated section of the constitution from a time when the USA planned on NOT having a standing army. You don't need guns to protect yourself from or over throw an oppressive non-representative government anymore. Have an American Spring! You don't need guns in the house to feel safe. That's what cops outside the house are for.

And a 9mm handgun is a lousy home defence weapon. So are .223 AR's. They can go right thru a bad guy, a two by four drywall clad wall and some siding to kill some one in a bedroom or neighbour's room. You need a custom half charged shotgun loaded with birdshot. Won't kill the bad guy but won't kill your wife in the next room. You can even get shotgun pistols in the US. Ask yourself what would you rather face someone taking potshots at you with a handgun or a shotgun?

The Ukraine is actually the homeland of the Russian people. Kiev ruled long before Moscow. Moscow only became powerful after the invasions of the Mongols and Tartars from the east took the central and southern areas of what is now Russia and Ukraine. Remnants of the tartars still remain in the Crimea even after suffering ethnic cleansing by Stalin.

The eastern areas of Ukraine are the industrialized areas. Much of the countries wealth is there.

When legitimate protestors took on a corrupt government many of those manning the frontline barricades where right wing thugs. During the Euro Cup soccer tournament played in the Ukraine early games were marred by racists throwing around fascist salutes. This feeds ex-communists and Russians who remember WWII or as the Russians call it, The Great Patriotic War.

Russia has time on it's hands. It can keep the pot at a low simmer until Western newspapers move on to newer stories. Money, arms, advisors to the right/wrong people and a UN Security Council veto will ensure that this will go on for a long time I think. It is conceivable that Russia could arm and equip a pro-Russian force big enough to retake Kiev militarily.

The Ukraine military must tread very lightly. "Heavy handed action" against rebels could bring in such things as Russian enforced no-fly zones or use of Russian aircraft to equalize the two sides.

NATO will not go to war over the Ukraine. I could even see it bailing on it's "attack against one is an attack against all" in the Baltic states. Maybe even the Balkan areas, not too close to Turkey. Any incursion in to Polish territory by Russian or pro-Russian forces will be sign to head for the basement.

When in danger of atomic attack. Please go down in to your basement. Crouch down in a corner, put your head between your knees and kiss your ass good-bye.

Topic: Should creationism be taught in schools?
Posted: 27 Apr 2014 22:32

Should it be taught, I presume in public schools? No, I do not think it should. Creationism is at most a disproven theory based on writings and histories from the Old Testament, I think. The Old Testament is one of the world's oldest historical documents and many times has been backed up with archeological evidence. There are good arguments for the existence of God. But the known and provable timeline of this planet; the appearance and disappearance from fossil records of whole species; creationism does not stand up using the scientific method. Disproven theories belong in history books. That is an Art. Metaphorical mythologies belong in stories of creation. This is Theology. Science is all about can the theory stand up to observation and testing. It may get metaphysical but is never metaphorical. Except 1 shake = 10 nanoseconds, 20 nanoseconds = two shakes of a lamb's tail.
