Have you read A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens? If not, I'm sure you're familiar with the story at the very least. In it, you never get the impression of any religious overtones (in my opinion, they are very minor at best.) The overall message (and again, this is my opinion) is about remembering to treat your fellow man with kindness and generosity. Spending time with family and loved ones.

Many non-believers celebrate Christmas becasue it's a tradition they grew up with... well... that's my best educated guess anyway. santa

I think that some of Scrooge's remarks about ''Humbug''were meant to be taken as a genuine critical statement by Dickens regarding the commerciality of Christmas which was practically invented by the Victorians as society became more affluent.

We're all bent on consumerism and Christmas is a veritable orgy of it. Though I've noticed less focus on it this year. Has anyone else sensed that?

Shades of 1984. What do we think of a British waitress in the 1940's and 1950's who would address a male customer as ''dear'' or ''love'' or ''darling''? I suppose that would now be interpreted as pandering to male superiority rather than just personalizing the service? Of course during the 40's many U.S. servicemen mistakenly thought they'd scored. :)

Topic Censored Words
Posted 15 Oct 2016 06:31

Banning any word has draconian overtones. Though to digress I'm always baffled how one word with a specific meaning is offensive but another with exactly the same meaning is not. All words are just sounds - telling somebody to go away sexually is just the same as ''fuck off'' yet the former might get a laugh but the latter cause offense.

Topic Standing for the National Anthem
Posted 14 Oct 2016 16:10

we have just had an indigenous athlete come out and say that other athletes shouldnt stand for the Australian anthem becuase its not theirs.
Happily other athletes have ignored and even derided that belief.
If you say your Australian then stand for the Anthem same with America if your not going to support your country then get the hell out and go be where you want to be.
Just don't put down what others believe in if you don't have the same conviction

You have no choice about where you are born thus you can stay where you like without being forced to pay homage to any damn thing. Go and bully a few more indigenous people. This logic means we all end up back in Africa.

Early Morning Sickness.

I crawl out of bed at 6:45.
Gritty eyed only half alive.

The door slams to with a crashing roar,
I'm off to bastard work once more.

Topic Should British children be banned from visiting Mosques?
Posted 01 Oct 2016 08:31

It used to be the Jehovahs Witnesses that left our assembly.

They are not asking for a choice, they already have a choice, they want to outright ban it and they are targeting one particular religion, which is already under scrutiny, which is why I have a problem with it.

I agree with Buz and LM that it should be all or none and likewise for this protest on facebook. If they were saying banned from all religious places of worship I wouldn't be so offended by it, but they are not, they are targeting Muslims specifically.

Now my kid's school hasn't taken them to any but I would have no problem if they did. They do learn about other religions including our own and enjoy doing so, I see no harm in it, I encourage it. My children are not racist or prejudice in any way and I believe that to be because of how I have raised them and also because of their learning and understanding of different cultures and religions.

I think you missed my point. (The ambiguities within language perhaps?) We had no choice about our assembly and it's good that they do

Topic Should British children be banned from visiting Mosques?
Posted 30 Sep 2016 08:47

When I was a kid we had something every morning at school called Assembly. This was a semi religious/administration meeting. We would sing hymns and listen to any messages about the school's running. The only people allowed to be excused were those whose religion was either Jewish or Roman Catholic everyone else had to attend. In other words the religion imposed on the state by the sex life of Henry the 8th was forced down our throats. Allowing parents/kids to attend some similar event but given a choice sounds fair enough to me.

Topic Has the UK replaced the US as the political laughingstock of the world?
Posted 20 Jul 2016 21:48

Well the U.K is busy compounding the joke by a retro step to go back to the good old days of the cold war (which I felt was never going to heat up as proved by the Cuban missile crisis in 1962) and the U.S.'s current loony says he would press the button (that is if he can find it). So to summarize I think we're about equal. Though you know we're not to be trusted - we lied to you guys about our nuclear capability by pretending we owned H bombs by letting off a huge atom bomb and pretending it was an H bomb so that we could share the responsibility of Armageddon together - isn't that cosy?
