Topic Ben Affleck is the new Batman....thoughts?
Posted 21 Dec 2016 16:11

Yep, a quick look at Batman's rogues gallery makes us realize that this was all intended for kiddies.

Yes kids as opposed to kiddies.

Topic What would you do If you were in my postion?
Posted 06 Dec 2016 08:20

I only met my father 3 times during my life. Once when I was four - the day he left and then I got curious when I had kids of my own so I traced him - after not seeing or having any contact with him for 40 years. We arranged a meeting and when we did I met my other siblings from his second marriage. I took my then family to meet them all. I do not regret this and my mother accepted this as a perfectly natural thing to do despite it being of some discomfort to her and the other members of her family. It wasn't an accusation of both of my parents neglect - my father's for showing no interest in me and hers for not encouraging communication but just a very strong curiosity about it all. These were their actions and I was not judgemental but the bottom line is they would have had the responsibility for this and the onus was not on me just as your situation was not created by you. If your mother has any strength of character I'm sure she will understand without any surreptitious notes under pillows but a frank open discussion face to face.

Sniztel leftovers from last night's Crimbo party the Czechs have a special day where the kids meet St Nicholas, (a religious Santa figure) an angel and a devil who grill them about their behaviour the good ones get a goody bag, (nobody ever confesses to bad behaviour).

Have you read A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens? If not, I'm sure you're familiar with the story at the very least. In it, you never get the impression of any religious overtones (in my opinion, they are very minor at best.) The overall message (and again, this is my opinion) is about remembering to treat your fellow man with kindness and generosity. Spending time with family and loved ones.

Many non-believers celebrate Christmas becasue it's a tradition they grew up with... well... that's my best educated guess anyway. santa

I think that some of Scrooge's remarks about ''Humbug''were meant to be taken as a genuine critical statement by Dickens regarding the commerciality of Christmas which was practically invented by the Victorians as society became more affluent.

We're all bent on consumerism and Christmas is a veritable orgy of it. Though I've noticed less focus on it this year. Has anyone else sensed that?

Shades of 1984. What do we think of a British waitress in the 1940's and 1950's who would address a male customer as ''dear'' or ''love'' or ''darling''? I suppose that would now be interpreted as pandering to male superiority rather than just personalizing the service? Of course during the 40's many U.S. servicemen mistakenly thought they'd scored. :)

Topic Censored Words
Posted 15 Oct 2016 06:31

Banning any word has draconian overtones. Though to digress I'm always baffled how one word with a specific meaning is offensive but another with exactly the same meaning is not. All words are just sounds - telling somebody to go away sexually is just the same as ''fuck off'' yet the former might get a laugh but the latter cause offense.

Topic Standing for the National Anthem
Posted 14 Oct 2016 16:10

we have just had an indigenous athlete come out and say that other athletes shouldnt stand for the Australian anthem becuase its not theirs.
Happily other athletes have ignored and even derided that belief.
If you say your Australian then stand for the Anthem same with America if your not going to support your country then get the hell out and go be where you want to be.
Just don't put down what others believe in if you don't have the same conviction

You have no choice about where you are born thus you can stay where you like without being forced to pay homage to any damn thing. Go and bully a few more indigenous people. This logic means we all end up back in Africa.

I see no logic in the accident of birth giving rise to loyalty to some area or other - merely practical reasons - that makes sense but ''my country right or wrong'' if anything in my mind is unethical.
