Topic: Where do you get your news?
Posted: 14 Aug 2017 01:16

The Guardian (weekdays and Saturdays) and Observer (Sundays) newspapers - the paper edition editions are delivered every morning and I read them over breakfast and morning coffee. As a subscriber I get these at a monthly cost of £51.96 which is a 36% saving over buying them from a newsagent. I am also a Guardian Member which gives other benefits, but also helps to ensure the continued independence of the newspaper group which unlike most other daily newspapers is owned by a Trust. I also read the online edition and have the app on my iPhone and iPad and get notifications of breaking news.

The BBC - radio, television (main news broadcasts at 6pm and 10pm including a section of local news for the North West of England), online - apps for both BBC news and BBC sport.

Free weekly local newspaper Manchester Weekly News which is delivered to 265,000 homes across Greater Manchester.

I also have the apps for the Manchester Evening News, the Washington Post and USA today which send notifications of important news to my phone and tablet.

I have the paper edition of New Scientist sent weekly in the post.

As a final comment - all online news unless it comes from an independent source should be treated with suspicion, this also applies to Wikipedia and Wikileaks which suffer from the fact that there is only light editorial control and peer group testing. As an examiner and supervisor at Masters and PhD level and I was often appalled by the belief that if something was on the internet it must be true, whereas a true scientist starts from a position of doubt.

Erotic Fantasies Of An Ageing Widower

I had known Carol since she was a small child when, with her brother Peter and their mother Rachel, she had come to live next door to my wife and me. At the time Rachel was in her mid thirties which was about the same age as our own children. She had recently divorced her husband when she discovered he had been having an affair with a co-worker for several years. Wanting to make a clean...

Doomed Love — Book 2

In hindsight, there was an inevitability To the tragedy that unfolded that day, And no doubt that responsibility lay, With the magnate’s conceited pride, In proposing a match of such unsuitability Just to restore the company’s image, Regardless of the feelings of the bride. Despite his own family’s humble lineage As a child she had been strictly forbidden To associate with the grubby children...

Doomed Love — Book 1

Barely visible in the inky gloom, The cold bodies of the young lovers lay, Just a glimmer of pale flesh in the dark, The watery fastness their woeful tomb. Unmoved by the sun’s warming ray, Never again would they rise with the lark And in the meadows laugh and play Like innocent children out of school, Or lie on shady banks beside the brook On hazy afternoons where the air was cool Happily...

In My Dreams

In my dreams you come to me, my darling, Every night in the darkness, you are there, Slipping quietly under the duvet To lie beside me in my lonely bed, Where I wait breathless with eager desire. The delicious feel of your naked breasts Nestling warm and yielding against my chest Unleashes a wave of nervous delight Down my body into my stirring shaft, Which hardens in hot anticipation Of...

Ode To A Courtesan

How much I wish that you were mine alone, But sadly I must share you with others, Just one more among your many lovers. Not for you of course the life of the streets; Your debauchery is much more refined, Living a life of pampered luxury, The mistress of rich and powerful men, A modern day courtesan free to choose Whom you will permit to enjoy your flesh. Long ago you realised your power,...

Forget Me Not

Almost ethereal in hue, your tiny blooms Hide shyly in the grass like small fragments of sky, Whispering of better places and kinder ways, A happy land revealed only to true lovers. Where love reigns supreme and fear and pain are unknown. In better days we have travelled there together, Walking hand in hand on verdant dew dropped meadows, Leaving a trail of silver where our feet have...

Recommended Read Unrequited Love

Oh lady fair, so haughty, and so coldly proud, Entreat though I may, naught it seems, can ever pierce The adamantine shell that guards your cruel soul, And even my most honeyed words are all in vain. However hard I strive to rise above the crowd Of those that press about your feet, whose cries so fierce Each clamour to be heard; and were I to enrol The gods above, my suit would surely...

No One Dies Of A Broken Heart

It was a heart attack the doctors said, Brought on by overwork and too much stress; He was never going to die in bed, It is true, but I would hazard a guess That this was only part of the real truth, And there was much more to it than they thought. Of course, he wasn't in the flush of youth, And at times seemed a little overwrought, Always burning the candle at both ends. He had been so...

Recommended Read Utter Desolation

Lost and alone, abandoned to my fate, I wander in the barren wilderness Despised and forsaken, longing for death. The cold and bitter ashes of remorse Fill my mouth with gall, and blister my tongue, And utter self loathing darkens my mind. Broken on the wheel of my arrogance, I bend my head to this desolation. No act of abject mortification Can cleanse my soul of my iniquities, And condemned...

My Aching Heart

Some days my soul rises up with the sun, Filled with the wild elation of loving, And knowing that love is returned by one, Whose heart belongs to me, and this proving By her deep devotion and caring words. As my heart takes flight, words flow from my mind And sing their joy as they soar with the birds. But there are other days when she seems blind To my fervent declarations of love And all...

Now Do You Believe Me?

"An elf? You saw an elf? You can't be serious," Sylvia almost screamed at her friend. "Julie, what in the world are you talking about? That is absolutely nuts, saying you have seen an elf. Seriously, where did this come from?" Julie and Sylvia were still in the changing room, wrapped in towels, recovering after their weekly work-out at the gym. Looking at them, the first thing that would...

Romance on the Railway

Each night beneath the kindly moon’s soft radiance We make again that joyful connection of love Vulnerable in our emotional nakedness As we bare the most profound feelings of our hearts All too soon the hour of parting is upon us Catching us unaware in our communion The whistle of the passing train is the sad signal That we must reluctantly say goodnight, sweet dreams Come away with me on...

Passion, Friend or Foe

Worry — What help have you ever been to me? Why then are you so ever present in my thoughts? So many journeys begin with you, Always destined to end with your friends here below. Not one thing do you add or enhance Never improving the quality of your mind, And the fruits you bear are nought but stress and damage. How often have you misguided me, Making even insignificant problems grow,...

Recommended Read A Letter To My Husband

Dearest husband, Oh, it has been such long winter, and you have been working so hard without a break. You looked tired when we talked last on Skype and I thought it would be a wonderful to get away for a few days — somewhere phones don't ring and we can be alone. I love it when we slip away for a few days together as though we were illicit lovers. I get so excited thinking about it. Just...

Recommended Read As Soon As I Saw Him

The last two years since my husband died have been very difficult for me. My friends have been kind to me, and I cannot really claim to have been lonely. In fact, at times I would have valued a little space to come to terms with my loss. What I have missed has not been company, but the physical intimacy that I so often took for granted; the loving cuddling, the touch of his hands, the sound...

Cocoon Of Darkness

I became a poetic jester Caught again in the Devil’s dark embrace, Jerking madly on the end of his line, Naked except for his sack of pleasures From which I take lascivious baubles In which to enfold my pulsating core, Until I spill the essence of my soul In burning streams of his philosophy. Oblivious to good I am constrained To dance to the hotly throbbing rhythms Of his...

Only Philistines

The winds spawned a glacier of darkness, creeping, Creeping slowly through the narrative of my gloom, While I became detached from reality, Lost within the earth stones of my chosen. So I courted the doom with blackened ink, feeling, Feeling the sins of my recently departed, And a ghost whispered, “Why don't you come in?” While hemlock dripped poison into my pen. As I looked askance from...
