Topic How do you feel about not being able to finish a book by your favorite Author?
Posted 13 Mar 2012 19:06

Really enjoyed Diana Gabaldon's first three books in the 'Outlander' series. My interest began to wane with each new release. Far too much outer detail, not enough story. I heard she started hiring a lot of researchers. Probably not a good idea as it appears the research began to overwhelm her writing.

The latest book of the series came out in 2009 'An Echo In the Bone'. 1200 pages of teeny tiny print that waffled endlessly. I couldn't get through the first fifty pages. Now, I've read Tolstoy's 'Anna Karenina', so believe me, I can get through anything if it's written well. But 'Echo In the Bone'. Aside from the detailed descriptions of absolutely everything, except what was happening amongst the characters, my major complaint... what the hell happened to the word 'said'. Honestly, three word dialogue tags after every sentence is just plain annoying.

Sorry Diana. I feel bad, but I just couldn't do it.

Topic Who reads 'Gay Erotic Fiction'?
Posted 11 Mar 2012 00:23

At some point most of us 'erotic romance' writers have pried our fingers away from the keyboard, lifted a glass of wine to our lips, shooed the cat off our mouse (for the thousandth time), kicked back in our less than ideal computer chair and asked ourselves. “Who actually reads this stuff? Who exactly is my target audience?”

Now, I’m not suggesting anyone should write specifically for a target audience, any more than one should consider selling their soul. Authors are artists first, booksellers second, or last, or never, depending on the latest trends. I know I started writing for my own enjoyment. The fact that anyone bothers to read the stories that tumble out of my head is icing on the proverbial cake.

But who does actually read this stuff? My experience has been that readership of gay erotica, gay erotic romance and M/M fiction is split pretty much 50/50 between gay/bi men and hetero women.

Why do you think that is? Why do hetero women make up such a large percentage of the 'gay erotic' readership base?

Topic Question to women about gay males...

gay porn .... VERY erotic in my books! I love gay erotica literature. I just LOVE the male body so much .... it's wonderful to watch.

So true, personal assistant. One of my friends asked me recently why, as a woman, I write gay erotic romance. I told her either I'm seriously twisted (which is a possibility), or I really love men. The male body in the throws of passion is amazing to watch, and there's an exchange of power between two men that is so revealing of their raw and urgent sexual nature. Each assuming a role that is sometimes unexpected. And like I always say, what's better than one hot guy... two.

Topic How long does it take you to write a story?

Typically an 80 page book takes me two weeks to write and edit. But on the other end of the spectrum, I have a 650 page book that I'm still tossing around after almost two years. Really depends on the writing level as well. Anything written at university english lit level is going to be brutal to edit. I've heard of some people taking 10 years.

Topic Do you write non-erotica?

Writing erotica is an emotional release for me, especially when I'm in full out editing or marketing mode for my other stuff. For me anyways, the erotica stories tend to be shorter; thus easier to manage and pick up intermittently when I need a break from the other stuff, because if I don't engage the creative part of my brain at least once a day... I get a little cranky!

Topic How long before we get to the sex?

I find it depends what kind of story I'm writing. If it's erotica there really should be sex in every chapter... more than once if possible. But in a novel, I like to listen to my characters. Find out where their hearts and heads are at, and then go from there.

Go to any gay men's porn site that allows their members to submit stories, and you will find a plethora of detailed descriptions!

Topic How many stories do people have on the go at once?
Posted 29 Jan 2012 21:01

I usually have at least three short erotica stories on the go (they're fun to pick up when I get sick of writing and editing my other stuff). Probably two full length novels, and for the past 2 years I've had two 650 pagers following me around, wanting the final edit done... boring! Also, reams of notes for other stories, otherwise my head would explode.
