Topic What sports do you think should be in the Olympics?
Posted 27 Feb 2018 22:52

It may sound like a joke but seriously a pole dancing event would be awesome. It would get ratings, it takes incredible athleticism, plus there are a ton of countries that would be competitive. I can see Ukraine, USA, Netherlands seriously contending for the gold. Judge it just like gymnastics with required skills judged on style. I really see it no different than pommel horse or balance beam or anything like that. It's the same kind of shit, just on a pole.

The events that I think should be excluded are the equestrian events.

Totally agree, while I enjoy equestrian sports, they shouldn't be an olympic sport. Might as well include fucking driving/racing events in the olympics.

Okay... so you would sue the school district if your kid, God forbid, was hurt or killed in a school shooting. I'm sure you're not the only one who thinks that way. As a parent, I'd probably do something similar.

But let's look at the real economics of arming teachers since you clearly feel that is the solution. While most teachers pay for silly things like pencils and papers, would they be willing to pay for proper gun training and for a gun? Some might, sure, but I highly doubt the majority will. So, if the schools demand or require teachers are armed, they will have to pony up the money to train us. Well, my question is, where are they going to get this money? No teacher union will allow this to be taken from teachers' salaries. Title 1 money probably won't be allowed for that purpose either (though I don't know that for sure). That leaves an increase in state and federal taxes. Less money in your paycheck to help support your family. And what about those who either don't have kids are their kids are already grown and out of school? Should they be made to pay for this training?

But since you like internet links and articles, I found one that is from a fairly reliable source. At the very least, their numbers are pretty solid. So, read it for yourself and make your own conclusions. The Economics of Arming America's Schools

Look at the use of the word “are” in this post. Wtf... I’m no Ernest Hemingway but damn. This is one are the “teachers”. Fuck.

there is nothing worse than hurting people's feelings. if we all policed what we said as well as carried a gun, there'd be no more mass murders of school kids.

I suppose so but there are people who it's almost impossible to hurt their feelings and there are people who get their feelings hurt just by the way you breathe.

I've seen teachers totally lose it when I was in school. One even pinned me to a white board with his hand around my neck in front of the whole class. He did similar things to a few students. And how many headlines have there been of teachers fucking their students? Like way underage students. That's pretty extreme behavior. I had a teacher who let me get away with skipping her class, wouldn't report me when she caught me smoking weed, would give me As when I didn't even do my homework or show up for tests. It was really weird. There was definitely something off about that situation. Either she was faking things to improve her students grades and attendance records averages or she was building up an inappropriate relationship where she was eventually going to ask me to get her some coke or something.

There are also pretty inept teachers out there who would probably get it stolen or forget the damn thing in stupid places. Even the police lose their guns sometimes. Plus I can see instances of them being overpowered by a bunch of students and having the gun taken from them. If you put guns in the hands of teachers I'm sure there will be all kinds of instances that would start happening like misfires, lost weapons, suicides, intimidation, teachers themselves shooting some little fuck that's pissing them off.

Plus wouldn't it make the police's job even harder when entering an active shooter situation if you now also have armed civilians to deal with slowing the whole process down? Especially since all of this happens in just a few minutes? How are the police supposed to know who is who? How are the teachers supposed to know the shooter isn't one of their own further confusing the matter? It's not like in the movies where the audience clearly knows who the bad guy is and the good guys never miss. Real life situations are total chaos.

I'm sure in nudiepant's mind he thinks he'd be able to quickly pull his gun out of his ass, army roll into a classroom and shoot the shooter right between the eyes then pose and blow the smoke off the barrel... but that is just pure fantasy.

German Foreign Office issued a travel advisory to all Germans in Canada:

"Germans in Canada should exercise a high degree of empathy. Be nice, don’t gloat, give hugs, buy rounds of hot chocolate. Just imagine how you would feel if Canada beat us in soccer."

Canada returned a diplomatic tweet:

“Thanks @GermanyDiplo. Congrats on your first shot at gold! We remember our first gold medal match in #IceHockey like it was yesterday… 1920 to be exact."

I think Germany should gloat. This was an amazing achievement. There is zero chance that this would happen if NHL players were allowed to compete...but still.

Go Deutschland. I hope they destroy the Russians.

They should do it like they do with soccer in the summer olympics. Where the athletes need to be under 23 years old pro or not but the team can have three players of any age. Makes it interesting to build the teams around three of their best players. Plus most countries don't have 14 world class players but they do have 3.

This from Facebook:

Just last week, Congress was calling on Tide to change the design of the Pods so teenagers would stop eating them. This week, teenagers should determine gun policy.

You want to know why this is super duper stupid Seax?

You’re basically saying that since a few teenagers bit a tide pod it discredits all teenager’s opinions because biting a tide pod is foolish.

You imply that after basically arguing for days on end that the killing sprees of a few gun owners shouldn’t affect all gun owners rights to own weapons meant for killing fast and in great numbers.

I hope you’re able to see the flawed logic at best and hypocrisy at worst.

This is why you and your ilk aren’t taken seriously.

So yes, both religions and science have no satisfying final answers there. But there's still a main difference though: science is very clear about the fact that it doesn't have those answers (and perhaps never will), whereas religions claim they do.

religions do not claim to have all the answers. in fact, when asked they mostly reply that we have faith our assumptions are correct.

on the other hand the scientists say we have fact on our side even though we can't connect all the dots yet.

it is why I said earlier that I am not pro or con to either side. i am open to both possibilities or others that may arise in future.

Sounds like you're an agnostic, ginger86.

A little "truthiness" emerges out of the murk.

40% of gun purchases in the USA are done without a background check....... FALSE!

There are more guns than people in the USA........... HALF TRUE

Actually, no one has any firm count on the number of people or the number of guns in the USA.

50% of older Romanian children carry wooden stake harpoons to school to fend off vampires..... FACT

Posted 21 Feb 2018 10:09

Good point. I assume you have an explanation of why? Is it because other countries don't have an equivalent to the NRA?

Older children in Finland often carry loaded guns with them to school. It seems that polar bears consider children walking to school as snacks. The older children are armed escorts for the younger ones. Yet there doesn't seem to be any record of those older children going on mass murder sprees. Is it because they have no NRA? Or is it because Finish children differ from American children in some way?

Yeah, probably.

One of my best friends is from Finland, I see her tomorrow and definitely have to ask her about that factoid. She's pretty antigun and thinks it's bizarre how in love with them America is. Where did you get that info, Seax?

If that is true I'm sure those older kids have proper training and background checks. I imagine there are all kinds of rules and checks they go through. Unlike here where a trip to the gun shop is faster than a trip to the grocery store.

I wonder what results you would get if you polled American parents about levels of graphic violence on TV, in the movies, or in video games.

You are aware that there are violent movies, tv and video games in other countries too, right? The exact same ones we have in America actually. But kids in other countries don't go on killing sprees... Wonder why...

What you're suggesting is pretty much how the NRA operates in the political arena. NRA members tend to vote more than any other demographic group. They actually show up at the polls and vote more often than senior citizens do, although there's probably some overlap there.

No anti-gun group has never come close. Good luck with that.

A lot of it boils down to the dreaded orange post cards.

At the drop of a hat, the NRA can mail out thousands of these things. Drums up support for the good guys. Pisses off the bad guys. Tears people up in the primaries.

Those days are numbered. Eventually brains prevail. Evolution has shown us that. In time people of your ilk will be looked down upon as a piece of trash that was thrown out in time.

My "children" are now 30 and 26, so yes. Not only because of their ages, but because they've both been trained extensively on safe gun handling. They are both expert shots. And one is an accredited law enforcement officer.

Children younger than mine should be taught in a manner appropriate to their age and maturity how to safely handle a firearm, and when not to handle one.

In many jurisdictions, there are age limits on children handling a firearm without being supervised by an adult. Check to see what those limits are in your area.

Florida's concealed carry program is not open to anyone under the age of 21. Some states set the age at 18. You should check the rules in your area on that as well.

If you're really interested, the NRA's Eddie Eagle program is a good place to start. Your local firing range's junior programs would be good too, especially if they're CMP affiliated.

I don't remember asking you this question.

I asked ericrhodes, as I find his perspective interesting and worthy of thought considering the age of his children, not you. You quoting your "children" and then stating they're fucking 30.... is weird since I never questioned or challenged that, I wasn't even talking to you. And your offspring aren't even "children' by anyone's definition. I already know what your stance is on any subject. You're one of the most predictable human beings on earth. I was trying to make conversation with another poster who has some stake in this conversation. An actual real stake and legitimate concern since his children are of the age concerning this recent shooting.

I have a child in High School and one in college. It scares the crap out of me to think something like this could happen to either of them. Do I have an answer? Not at all. The best I can do is encourage my children to be aware of their surroundings and if they suspect some one is a loose cannon, to report it. Sad, this happens all too often.

Do you think your children would be safer if they were allowed to carry a concealed weapon? Not trying to bait you or anything. It's an honest question. Not talking about just a moment of danger, I'm talking about all the time. Would you feel more at ease if your children could pull out a gun at anytime if need be?

You didn't ask me, but I just felt like telling you what a dumb-assed question this actually is. Mauser was a massive corporation, even in the late 1800's. They produced over a million of those pistols. Those pistols were a favorite weapon of German troops and officers, and all their allies all through World War I. Mauser also had the ability to ship them world-wide, and there were no import restrictions. Unlicensed copies were also being cranked out by a wide variety of companies in Spain and China all throughout the early 20th Century. So to answer your question: Pretty much everyone in the world had access to them. Everyone, everywhere.

How much did they cost?

Were they expensive?

Were arms dealers peddling to civilians?

How many people could read and write?

How many people had a fixed address?

Was there two day shipping?

How much easier was it to get away with a crime back then?

Was there adequate reporting back then of every incident with these guns?

Were unfavorable stories swept under the rug back then to appease big money interests?

What was the percentage of people who read the news back then?

Was there no reporting of it as a problem because it was at the dawn of the semi auto and it actually takes a while before it becomes a pattern?

You say over a million were made (not sure what the year range on that is) so on the generous side that is 1.9 million... What is the ratio to the populace back then with how many are produced now?

Everyone in the world could get one? really?

Really nudiepants, it doesn't seem, judging from your posts, that you put too much thought into what you say. It's the think tank, not the fire from your hip tank.

This is the Mauser C96. It was the first widely available semi-automatic firearm. It made its debut in 1896.

This is the Artillery Model Luger adopted by Germany in 1908. Note the 32 round "drum" magazine.

This is an FN/Browning designed "Hi-Power" known in Europe as the P35 due to its adoption in 1935. It was the first 9mm Parabellum (9x19 or Luger) pistol to introduce a double stack magazine which in this pistol held 13 rounds. This particular example is of some interest because if you study the markings carefully you'll see it was made by Inglis in Canada.

Switching to rifle side for a moment, This is the US Rifle .30 caliber M1 Garand. It was adopted by the United States Army in 1936.

And last but not least, this is the prototype of the Armalite AR-15. It was first produced in quantity in 1959 and produced for the US Army as the M-16 starting in 1964.

The first mass shooting in the USA involving semi-automatic weapons was likely the one at a San Ysidro McDonalds on July 18, 1984. Since you're apparently convinced that mass shootings are caused by the easy availability of semi-automatic firearms, perhaps you'd like to explain to all of us the 88 year gap between the San Ysidro shooting and the introduction of the Mauser C96, or the 25 year gap between the same shooting and the introduction of the AR-15.

P.S. Don't be a bonehead. I "jumped to Israel" because someone else already brought Israel's approach to gun control.

Yes Israel requires training and a permit to own a gun. But since most Israeli's are veterans, reservists, or active military, just about everyone makes the cut and you get scenes like this even on Israeli beaches.

Obviously, as time goes by... more are available for one. Plus when was the internet and the ease it brings to everything, including buying and researching guns, catapulted into the consciousness of the masses? I think you'll find a direct correlation.
