Topic La Resistance
Posted 22 Jan 2017 09:49

A columnist in a Toronto paper referred to this poem and how it resonates after Trump's inauguration. It was written by W.H. Auden decades ago. I have added a complete version here.

What we all have to do is more than march and resist. Americans in particular have to organize politically from the bottom up, in local and state politics and the federal level. The Democratic party has to retake power, precinct by precinct, state by state. It has to reclaim its role as the voice of the working class and middle class. There is a long list of why Trump is anathema to all that America purportedly stands for. The country has to be taken back from him and his alt right (polite for neo-Nazis like Steve Bannon) and hard right team and Cabinet nominees. It is like reading "1984". His appointees have views opposing the agencies that they are named to lead. Jeff Sessions for Justice*, an EPA who opposes all environmental legislation and regulation and has sued against it. An Education Secretary who does not support public education. A Secretary of State with close ties to Putin. Cognitive dissonance. Volunteer, organize, make your voices heard, find and support candidates to bring a progressive agenda to politics. Do not let anything that Trump does pass silently. Do as Sprite says and call every day. That is three minutes. Organizing politically at the local level will take more time and effort but is the only way to take your country back. Do not wait. You have to start now to impact the 2018 elections. Show an affirming flame. Be an ironic point of light.

*(edit) Jeff Sessions has a long history opposing civil rights, voting rights, and women's rights. He is a Southerner of the old school segregationist ilk.

Here is the poem.

September 1, 1939
I sit in one of the dives

On Fifty-second Street
Uncertain and afraid
As the clever hopes expire
Of a low dishonest decade:
Waves of anger and fear
Circulate over the bright
And darkened lands of the earth,
Obsessing our private lives;
The unmentionable odor of death
Offends the September night.
Accurate scholarship can
Unearth the whole offence
From Luther until now
That has driven a culture mad,
Find what occurred at Linz,
What huge imago made
A psychopathic god:
I and the public know
What all schoolchildren learn,
Those to whom evil is done
Do evil in return.
Exiled Thucydides knew
All that a speech can say
About democracy,
And what dictators do,
The elderly rubbish they talk
To an apathetic grave;
Analysed all in his book,
The enlightenment driven away,
The habit-forming pain,
Mismanagement and grief:
We must suffer them all again.
Into this neutral air
Where blind skyscrapers use
Their full height to proclaim
The strength of Collective Man,
Each language pours its vain
Competitive excuse;
But who can live for long
In an euphoric dream?
Out of the mirror they stare,
Imperialism's face
And the international wrong.
Faces along the bar
Cling to their average day:
The lights must never go out,
The music must always play
All the conventions conspire
To make this fort assume
The furniture of home;
Lest we should see where we are,
Lost in a haunted wood,
Children afraid of the night
Who have never been happy or good.
The windiest militant trash
Important Persons shout
Is not so crude as our wish:
What mad Nijinsky wrote
About Diaghilev
Is true of the normal heart;
The error bred in the bone
Of each woman and each man
Craves what it cannot have,
Not universal love,
But to be loved alone.
From the conservative dark
Into the ethical life
The dense commuters come,
Repeating their morning vow,
"I will be true to the wife,
I'll concentrate more on my work,"
And helpless governors wake
To resume their compulsory game:
Who can release them now,
Who can reach the deaf,
Who can speak for the dumb?
All I have is a voice
To undo the folded lie,
The romantic lie in the brain
Of the sensual Man-in-the-street
The lie of Authority
Whose buildings grope the sky:
There is no such thing as the State
And no one exists alone;
Hunger allows no choice
To the citizen or the police;
We must love one another or die.
Defenceless under the night
Our world in stupor lies;
Yet, dotted everywhere,
Ironic points of light
Flash out wherever the Just
Exchange their messages:
May I, composed like them
Of Eros and of dust,
Beleaguered by the same
Negation and despair,
Show an affirming flame.

Topic Collaborators... share who you've written with or want to write with...

I've had the honor of working with some of our most talented writers. It's been an incredibly positive experience and together we've won multiple awards. I am very proud that all of these stories now appear on my page as well as my esteemed cowriters.

I have had the pleasure of writing with Milik. There was a two-part legally related story called "Legal Intrigue" and the multi-part "Power Play" whose characters drove the story along further than we imagined when we began. Both were well received by Lushies and awarded RRs, an EP and a series award. I also co-wrote a long series of romantic and sexy stories with Alphamagus earlier in my membership here called "Parisian Surprise". It won a series award. RRs were not being given at that time if I remember correctly.

There is a real excitement that happens when you work with someone on a shared idea, a synergy that can bring the writing to a higher level than you expect - a kind of writers' serendipity. You seem to spur each other on.

I have stepped back a little here, but would consider collaborating again with the right person and a shared vision of a story. Here are links to the stories/series mentioned as well as a couple for stories I wrote myself which merited awards. Three solo efforts (if I remember correctly) were top ten competition entries.

Trump has been played like a yoyo by Putin with a few complimentary words. Imagine the leader of the free world made into putty by a ruthless dictator's flattery. The Donald seems to admire dictators and thinks that the presidency would be the same. He has no idea how the government works in the US - a combination of the two houses of Congress and the President. He imagines he would rule by fiat and has blamed Clinton for not solving every problem single-handedly for the past thirty years. He is singularly unfit to be President having appealed to the worst in people and normalizing racism, sexism, xenophobia, and so much more. The list is endless. And now we know that he has sexually assaulted women as some sort of droit de seigneur of a rich entertainer. He says he will not accept the election results (unless he wins which is unlikely) and suggests that the 2nd Amendment is a solution - armed violence. He has gone very close to suggesting that Clinton be assassinated, which as I understand it on its own is a crime. I have seen his supporters saying that if he loses that doing this would be a patriotic act. How much more crazy can they get?

Trump has to be defeated and defeated soundly enough to give control of the House and the Senate to the Dems. The GOP has to rebuild itself from the ground up offering a conservative alternative to the Dems and casting out the alt right extremists and their odious opinions. Perhaps they will form another party led by Trump and Steve Bannon with Roger Ailes as their media guru, like the extreme right parties in Europe. The GOP sold their souls to Trump and will reap the rewards of that.

I am more afraid of what will happen after the election, which I expect that Trump will lose. There is a segment of his followers that are particularly disturbing. Locking Clinton up is not enough for some of these people. They are now vowing to take her out. I saw one man interviewed who said it would be a patriotic act. As I understand it, making such a threat is a crime. It is people like him should be locked up.

Trump knows he is going to lose and is lashing out in every way, trying to undermine the process, an effort to delegitimize another president as he did with President Obama. This is contrary to how election contenders behave in the US. They accept the outcome. If anyone could have made an issue of legitimacy it was Al Gore, who lost to George Bush because of Florida where his brother was governor and in charge of the process along with a GOP Secretary of State, Katherine Harris. She too was clearly doing whatever she could to skew the results to Bush. The Supreme Court made the final decision led by Scalia. Gore accepted it all instead of keeping the country in turmoil for months over the 500 or so Florida votes that lost the election for him. He did win the popular vote in the country, but put country before party and himself in an act of grace.

I think we will see Trump unraveling before us until the election and unwilling to concede if he loses. The GOP is likely to split with one half made up of its traditional politicians like Paul Ryan, and another with the alt right Steve Bannon, and Roger Ailes and Donald Trump. This second part will continue with its racist, sexist, nativist, xenophobic, anti-Semitic rhetoric to the delight of those who fanatically supported Trump and agreed with the hateful ideas openly asserted or given some cover between the lines.

So, there is reason to fear for the US, no matter how this election ends.

After last night's performance, we understand why Trump admires Putin so much. Talking about putting your political opponents in jail is reminiscent of dictators like Putin and Stalin, not elected presidents in democracies. He has bragged about sexually assaulting women, women who likely could not pursue it because of his money and power, so the criminal acts have been perpetrated by him.

He is a volatile child-man, with an enormous ego, thin skin, and no moral compass. His response to criticism is to vow revenge in a Nixon-like fashion. He lies with impunity. In Trumpworld, the earth is flat and black is white if he says so and it is convenient. This is like the children's story, "The Emperor's New Clothes" in that his followers are willfully blind to his utter and complete lack of ability and character to be POTUS. So long as he keeps spewing hate they are happy. I well understand that Hillary Clinton is a flawed candidate, but her flaws are nothing compared to The Donald's.

The town hall likely ended in a draw at best from Trump's point of view. Trump used a scorched earth approach that will keep his base. He did nothing to increase the number of people voting for him, especially women and independents. His remaining on the ticket is the best outcome for Clinton. All he has to do is keep talking and threatening and lying and she wins.

It's creepy and more than a little bit sick. I think this man has mental health issues for a lot of reasons and this is one of them.

A fucking handshake though... Oh hey we are on TV, let me give my daughter a handshake so it's not weird lol.

He has made some very inappropriate remarks about Ivanka and allowed Howard Stern to call her a piece of ass. What father would be complicit in a such a conversation about his daughter? There is a part of him that sees her that way. It is best that he keep his hands off her. Aside from all of the other reasons that he is unfit to be the POTUS, he has lots of issues with women, including his daughter, always viewing them as possibilities for sex. His conversation with Billy Bush is evidence of that and I understand that there are lots more like that which will likely be revealed before this is over.

The only question now is if the Democrats will retake both the House and the Senate. Trump is toast and is taking the GOP down with him. The GOP candidates now denouncing him should have done so months ago instead of defending the indefensible. If they had put country before party, Trump would never have gotten the nomination.

There is something worse. It is Lewy body disease which is like having Alzheimer's and Parkinson's simultaneously. So you are deteriorating both mentally and physically. I understand that Robin Williams' wife said he had been diagnosed with it.

For me it is equal. I think that you should be telling a story that captures the imagination of the reader, one that happens to lead to sex within the story. Sex scenes strung together with haphazard narrative do not make an interesting story. Your characters should have some depth and be believable. If they are, the story will unfold and the sex that happens will read as a natural development in the story.

I was at work and one of the law clerks told us that a plane had gone into one of the Towers. I was sure at first that it was some internet hoax, but quickly realized it was true. I was concerned because a classmate worked downtown in NYC for Goldman Sachs. I was trying frantically to get a hold of him after the second plane crashed into the other tower. It was not until late than evening that he called me back. I also remember thinking about having been to Windows on the World for New Year's Eve a few years before. It was unimaginable to me that the twin towers were no longer there. I love NYC and have been going there since my mother took me for the first time when I was about thirteen. This was just impossible to comprehend. There was some worry that there might be more such attacks and as I worked in one of the towers clustered in the financial district of Toronto, it was decided that we should go home for the rest of the day until more was known about what had happened. I remember being glued to the television all day and evening, crying silent tears for all those who were lost. I think about that New Year's Eve each year now, the vista of the city around us, the fantastic food and wine, the beautiful setting, and that it is all gone. All those people who had done nothing to harm anyone except go to their jobs that morning, and all of the firefighters, police and others who lost their lives trying to save others. I remember the people who jumped from the upper floors rather than be consumed by fire. How horrific.

It has not stopped as we have seen in Paris, Brussels, Nice and elsewhere. All because of hate. All because of an inability to accept the tolerance of western liberal democratic culture. All because of a perversion of religion. And it is so insidious that there seems to be no way to stop it.

This is the current state of the race nationally in a state by state poll. Some of the results are surprising. There are far more states in play than usual, including Texas.

The Washington Post has also fact checked the assertion that Clinton was fired from the Watergate investigation finding that to be untrue giving it four Pinocchios.

I agree with you. We can hope that this case got so much publicity that Brock Turner will be under scrutiny for the rest of his life, and that this impacts on his work life and his personal life. How many employers would choose him? How many women would want to date him? I have no doubt that his parents will still be helicopter parents trying to ease his way with their money and connections. However, his victim made a powerful statement that spoke to thousands of people including VP Biden. Turner will always be remembered for one thing in his life no matter what he does. He deserves that.

The point of freedom of expression is that it is for all opinions not just those you agree with. So, in a free democratic society we have to tolerate opinions that are offensive to us. There are limits on this. The classic legal example is that one may not yell "fire" in a crowded theater. Ideas and opinions are meant to compete in the public square for support.

Your election process is too bloody long. Just have a vote already

In Canada it is much shorter. The election we had last fall lasted eleven weeks and that was long for here. It is generally about eight weeks or so. The minimum requirement is 36 days.

As I understand it, if one or both gets 15% of the voters n a national public opinion poll... and I have not clue what they do have at this moment as I'm just too lazy to bother looking and let's be real... they seem to change at the drop of a hat... then they will be part of the debates. However, I have no idea when the cutoff for that is so we'll see if one or both make the debate or not.

Honestly... I hope they both do. We need some fresh blood and new voices.

Earlier today I saw the latest numbers. Johnson was at 10% and Stein was at 5%. If I remember correctly Clinton was ahead of Trump by 7%.

Lastly My comment to someone incapable of recognizing the difference between the contempt and disgust I feel for Goebbels and ADMIRATION should be GRATEFUL for being called an airhead, as they haven't as yet met the intellectual requirements to be CONSIDERED TO BE ONE! What's HYSTERICAL is you telling ME to desist when I'm having one disgusting allegation after another hurled at me by you and others on this thread.

I did not notice this before.

You have not once in this thread expressed your contempt and disgust for Goebbels, only your contempt and disgust for anyone who disagrees with you. As Ruthie said, your posts confirm that you agree with and admire him. We take you at your word.

You complain about insults and first call me an airhead and then tell me that I have not met the intellectual level of an airhead. If that is true, you are the Dalai Lama. What I think really rankles you is intelligent, articulate women having the gall to confront you. You are much harder on us than the men who have done so, making a point of belittling and demeaning us with snide name calling. That tells us more about you and what threatens you. So, I would advise you to treat others with the respect you demand for yourself. Or you can continue with your fever dreams and stew in your own vitriol.
