Topic What are you reading?

I just finished this. An editor friend of mine gave me an advance copy. It is as if "The Talented Mr. Ripley" was combined with Lisbeth Salander and a dash of porn. If anyone else has read it, I would like to know what you think.

I saw Nora Ephron's son interviewed about the documentary he had made about his mother. Carl Bernstein of Watergate fame is his father and her next husband was writer Nick Pileggi. She was the daughter of two screen writers and wrote for newspapers, magazines, and the screen in her career as well as several books. She wrote Silkwood, When Harry Met Sally, Sleepless in Seattle and Julia and Julia. All of this is preamble to the advice Nora's mother gave her: Everything is copy.

I think that we are scavengers and magpies as mentioned already. All of our life's experiences, interactions with people, thoughts, memories, emotions and observations form a vast trove to draw on when we write whether conscious or not. I have written a story based on a real experience. I have written others that come from imagination but are based on material from that trove. We remember how something sounded or felt or the emotion of a particular moment and that is transferred from our consciousness to the page.

I guess we are all going to hell, but judging by those who have added their voices here we will have a good time. I am with you, ABG. I brought a nice Barolo.

There are a lot of usages in the UK e.g. lift, loo, lorry that are different in American English (elevator, bathroom, truck).

I completely agree that there are unpleasant members on Lush. Just as there are unpleasant people every day in our lives. It's a natural order of things. No good without bad. No light without dark. The best way to deal with those members you don't like is not to deal with them. At some point they will have burned every bridge and there won't be anywhere else for them to go. If a troll gets fed they will stay until the food runs out.

'nuff said. Back to my shadows.

Agreed. I would like to add to that. Remember that you are unlikely to convince someone who disagrees with you by insulting them. They may be as adamant in their position as you are in yours. If they remain entrenched in their view after hearing your logical argument, accept the stalemate and walk away. It is not always necessary to have the last word. It is the impulse to keep responding that feeds those who are trolls. Discourse in the public arena will likely reveal who is right.

Now I will join Warlock in the shadows.

Topic Best female characters?

Stacey in "Stacey's Choice" is the heroine of the first story I wrote on my own. I had previously written only poetry and collaborated on stories. The story takes place in my city. She shares my love of both the Mediterranean countries and art, and a weakness for arty men. To be honest, I think there is a piece of me in every almost every female character I have written, but perhaps because Stacey was my first, she remains dear to me.

Topic Who should be the next US president?
Posted 15 Apr 2016 15:06

Maybe it is because he is a bombastic egotist who has no idea about governance of a country, domestic or foreign policy, or anything else that a president should know. He is like a carnival pitchman with no depth of knowledge. People are afraid for someone like that to be in that position. He is far better to go back to doing "Apprentice" on television. Governance is not a reality show. With respect, he has appealed to the worst in people: intolerance and bigotry, sexism, xenophobia, homophobia and an anti-intellectualism that is appalling. He was in bed with the Tea Party and the birthers, knowingly undermining President Obama's authority. He is now acting like a child crying foul when he did not have the savvy to know the rules for delegates and the process in every single state. If he and his team are incapable of that how could he possibly run the country? I don't understand his appeal unless his voters imagine he will somehow make them rich too. Not likely.

Topic The inability to let someone go- an excuse for murder?
Posted 14 Apr 2016 14:50

This is not love, it is about power. Control is a big element in this which is why it often happens when a spouse who has already been physically and/or emotionally abused leaves. The men (sorry but it is usually men) cannot accept that their spouse is beyond their control and their rage spins out of control with the ultimate violence. If there are children involved it is not so easy to leave and find a safe place to escape. Restraining orders are a step that can be taken but in reality cannot protect anyone 24/7.

Topic Advice before submitting a story
Posted 07 Apr 2016 12:26

Sorry to open a forum that has been closed or dead for a while, but I have a few questions and thoughts. I love to write not only erotica but other stories as well. So a few stories have come back as rejected due to mostly writer error (hard to admit but hey it's the truth). Ok first thing I noticed is "run on sentences" comes up a lot. I have tried what buz has said. Going away leaving it be for a while then coming back. Going through it multiple times but it keeps coming up. I really don't have someone to proof read. Mostly because most of my friends hate to read. So its basically me reading my story over and over again. Any suggestions? Next question is. I see that when I am supposed to edit my story, the mods would prefer that I do it on Lush. I write a lot when I am on the road. It is so much easier for me to go back into my files and edit it there. Is it a MUST to edit it on Lush or a preference?

Thanks with any help.

The issues outlined in my original post are as relevant now as they were when it was written, so no apology is necessary. Run on sentences usually include too many thoughts or actions in one sentence. As you write or re-read your work ask yourself if your sentences could be divided and have the pieces stand alone. You might also read some EP stories to give you an idea of their styles. Editing for spelling should not depend on spell check or similar programs as they allow mistakes that are words. If you feel your spelling needs more help, perhaps asking if there are members willing to proofread your work in the Writer's Forum would be a good idea.

Story moderators prefer that you edit your story within Lush when it is sent back to you because they can see the changes you have made in its iterations and therefore if you have made the corrections requested. It wastes moderator time when some members resubmit their stories without having gone through the list provided to them and made the changes asked for.

I hope this helps.

Topic Writing first person from a perspective not your own
Posted 01 Apr 2016 09:26

I imagine that on a college/university campus the complaint was that this student had appropriated a voice not his own. However, I think that writing is a creative process and that we cannot and should not be limited by whatever demographics we belong to. However it is necessary to research thoroughly to inhabit character of someone who is not at all like you so that your representation of that character is believable and authentic to the reader. On the whole, I think we tend to write from a perspective that feels most comfortable to us whatever gender, sexual orientation, or other factor we are. To write from a male point of view as a female is a leap, for example, if it is to seem plausible to men who read it. I think that talented writers can carry this off, but as I said that it cannot be done without doing a lot of homework first. Writing is, after all, about creativity but has to be rooted in some semblance of reality and not to great a suspension of disbelief.

Topic The World Women Live In - Rape Culture Part 2

You are right Angryish Lover. My point was that the complainants had undermined their own case by not disclosing everything that had happened before and after the alleged assaults. This destroyed their credibility in the eyes of the judge, correctly so. I am not sure what you know about this case and related allegations from other women, but once a few women came forward, it snowballed. There were numerous alleged victims over many years whose stories were remarkably the same. This pattern is why the allegations were believed by the public. Mr. Ghomeshi's behaviour in the workplace also was disclosed and it was clear that he was not only a tyrant there, but that he had also sexually harassed subordinates.

The criminal justice system has to find a way to balance the rights of the accused against those of the alleged victims in such cases. The complainants have to understand that they have a responsibility to reveal everything that relates to the case including interaction with the accused before and after the alleged events to the police and the Crown Attorney. It might have been possible to convict this man had all of this information been available before the trial, or the CA could have decided that the case was too weak to prosecute, but at least the CA would not have been broadsided in court with damaging facts held back by the complainants. Perhaps the police and CAs need further training in handling these cases and complainants need legal advice to navigate this process despite their not being the accused in the trial.

There is another trial scheduled for June for different but similar allegations against the same accused. I suspect the CA and the police are doing a lot of homework now to avoid a similar outcome.
