Topic Male or Female authors?
Posted 17 Jul 2013 14:56

I find this an interesting question as I have co-written with two men now. People reading the stories have said that the writing is seamless and that they could not tell which parts were written by each of us. While I understand that men and women may bring different sensibilities to writing, it is possible to speak to everyone without it being specifically a male or female voice.

I agree with Lisa. Use contractions in dialogue and avoid them in your narrative. Also you should review the resource for formatting and punctuating dialogue and follow the examples there. Here is the link:

Topic Lecturer shagging uni student, taboo or no?
Posted 03 Jul 2013 13:12

Not at all. The power difference, duty of care, perception of bias and all the complications that this would cause remain the same. As well, the prohibition in most university employment contracts or rules of professional conduct would not make an exception for a mature student.

I believe that although it is not illegal, at most colleges and universities a professor/lecturer carrying on with a student would be considered unprofessional conduct. There are multiple reasons for this: the duty of care, the power differential, and the possibility of bias. So, while they may be consenting adults strictly speaking, this is not a relationship of equals and is generally frowned upon.

Think about it. It opens the doors to all kinds of problems especially if it goes wrong. Allegations of sexual harassment. Allegations of unfair treatment/marking because of the sexual relationship or its end. Not a good idea.

Topic Ratings and comments

Seems there's a little resistance to the scrapping of the forced commenting feature.

I gather some people would go further and want to be able to choose which scores they'd like comments to be forced on? I can't help but think that would cause more scoring bias. If people are forced to comment on a 1 or 2 score for example, then someone who doesn't want to leave a comment, is either not going to vote it a 1 or 2 (maybe a 3 instead), or simply not vote at all. That's not going to help the author long term, it will artificially keep their scores higher than they should be.

Random thought - it would be good to have the option to turn commenting on / off, and voting on / off, at story level, rather than across the board.

I think that is what 1ball is after.

Leaving well enough alone. I want to keep editing, looking for repetitive words, finding just the right ones to express what I want to say. Wanting precision can be a curse as well as an asset.

Topic The Gentleman's Charter

Interesting thread.

I have found that a true gentlemen does not have to advertise that they are respectful, nor do they need to implore they have manners.

True gentlemen are found in all walks of life, all ages, any profession and any status. They wear jeans, or board shorts, some wear suits, others wear uniforms. It's not how a man looks, but how a man treat another person .... regardless of gender or age or status. A true gentleman in my books has compassion, empathy and a sense of his own worth (not selfish, nor conceited, nor arrogant) that he wants to share with you and others.

For the sake of clarity, story moderators are not literary critics. If they were, many stories would not be posted. We are here to insure that stories comply with the site's guidelines on issues such as underage sex. We are also here to maintain a standard of literacy that is an accepted norm and would be even more stringent if you were a published author. So, you are all free to write stories within the guidelines as you wish, however, these stories will be in literate English if they are to be posted on this site. The readers will decide what they like.

Topic Stuck in the world of REJECTION
Posted 28 May 2013 11:17

If you read the notes written by the moderator in your rejection, you should know where your mistakes are. The linked resources relate to the areas of your mistakes. You should read them carefully and understand them before editing your story. As well, do not rely on spell check alone as it allows for errors that are words. There are many tools available to you in the Writer's Resources. Read them and use them.

If you are serious about writing, you will have to learn the rules involved, just as you did when you learned how to drive. It is up to you to make the effort. While help from others can assist in the short term, relying on this will leave you in the same place with your next story unless you understand the changes they suggest and learn from them.

The biggest thing that bugs me lately I guess is putting myself on AWAY especially when I am at work or just want to concentrate on reading a story. I cannot chat at work but I am able to read stories. But even on AWAY status there are still many folks who just ignore it and just bombard you with online messages.

You can change your status to invisible by going to your "online status" in your personal settings. Choose "Block all - invisible" from the drop down answering "Who can see you?".

You can read or answer PMs uninterrupted then.
