Topic Honestly... (Are YOU a little bit Racist?)
Posted 24 Jan 2016 09:42

While I agree with Dani's post, let us remember one thing. Racism includes those who rage against foreigners, immigrants, and anyone who does not share their religion. Everything she said about denying humanity and creating an other who does not look, act, speak, worship the way we do applies to genocide in Rwanda and elsewhere in Africa and in the Balkans in Europe, to the long history of anti-Semitism, to anti-immigrant sentiment in Europe and elsewhere even before the Syrian refugee crisis, and to many more groups and places. There was a time when politicians used code words to tap into this, but with the emergence of Donald Trump as the leader in the GOP nomination race and several right wing figures in Europe and elsewhere, it has become more blatant and overt, even socially acceptable in some circles. We have seen where this leads. The question is how to stop it.

Last movie was "Spotlight", well worth seeing. The ensemble cast was fantastic.

Want to see "Carol, "In the Shadow of Women", and "The Benefactor".

I missed "Trumbo" and will stream it when it is available.

Topic Rest In Peace - Alan Rickman
Posted 14 Jan 2016 15:09

What a wonderful actor. He could display so much without uttering a word as in "Sense and Sensibility". And then there were performances like the one Nicola mentioned in "Robin Hood". No one could sneer better.

And that voice! I read in The Guardian that Lindsay Duncan, who starred with him in Les Liaisons Dangereuses on stage and for which he was nominated for a Tony, said of her co-star’s sonorous performance that audiences would leave the theatre wanting to have sex “and preferably with Alan Rickman”. She was right about its impact. It certainly worked for me.

If you have not seen it, he and Emma Thompson play former lovers meeting in "The Song of Lunch". He also narrates the story. It is Rickman at his sardonic best.

Topic Readers: Do sex scenes have to be explicit?
Posted 14 Jan 2016 14:42

I think explicit yes, but gratuitous no. The main thing, is that it is an integral part of the story.

Danielle x

This. Sometimes explicit is appropriate, and sometimes what is left out is more of a turn on as it uses the reader's imagination to fill in the details in a way that arouses them the most. Either way, it depends on the talent of the writer. An explicit description written mechanically like the steps in a recipe is not a turn on. Eliding some details in a well written scene can be really steamy. A good writer can do either well.

Story moderators can only do so much with what's submitted. Of course the ante has been upped over the past couple of years, but even still, unless a story has serious grammatical and technical errors, most likely it will be passed. Depending on who the moderator is, the author will usually be given tips on how to develop a plot and other things that make a story great. But as long as it's grammatically and technically sound (for the most part) and doesn't violate site rules, then the story is likely to be approved (I know you understand this process, but I'm just expounding for the sake of others reading this post).

This is exactly right unless things have changed since I was a story moderator. If a story has no technical and/or grammar errors and is within the rules of the site it will be passed. There are many stories that I allowed to be posted which I thought were badly written, unimaginative, or worse. Moderators are there to enforce standards, but are not literary critics or gatekeepers in that sense. The quality of the writing is judged by the readers with their scores and comments. Even so, there are certain writers who have found a niche despite not being shining examples of what would normally be considered great writing. Each one to their own taste.

You can put a pretty bow on it with any sex punishments or gifts, but failing to take responsibility and stop hurting her will end your relationship. Apologize, work on your issues, and let her know you're doing so.

This. Flowers and chocolate are not bad, but a gift certificate for a day of pampering at a spa would be better. Along with a promise to better communicate from now on and an apology.

I think BiMale73 has it right. If you offer goods or services to the public, you have to offer them to everyone without prejudice. A kosher butcher cannot be faulted for not offering bacon because he does not sell it to anyone. A hotel by definition offers accommodation to the public. They have no right to discriminate among their customers based on their religious beliefs, ethnicity, language, country of origin, or several other grounds including sexual orientation. Sexual orientation has the same status as other grounds in human rights legislation.

A good example of this clash is the county clerk who refused to issue marriage licences to gay couples after the law changed. Was she correct in upholding her religious views or was she imposing them on others? The legal view is that she was in the wrong. The US Constitution clearly separates church and state. It guarantees freedom of religion for all, but not the right to impose their religious values on others in carrying out civil duties.

So, Steph, I understand your being conflicted, but sexual orientation is no different in this context than nationality or other protected grounds. Discrimination is discrimination.

Topic Christmas Gift Perfume
Posted 23 Dec 2015 17:50

There are gift sets available of trial sizes several scents and a gift coupon for a full size of the one that you like best. That may be a good solution. Remember too that perfume changes with each person's body chemistry.

I like Lauren, Romance, and Flowerbomb. I occasionally wear Chloe and Allure.

If you don't find the tester set I suggested, I would opt for a light, fresh scent as she is not used to wearing perfume.

Congratulations. Just keep working at it, taking in any advice given to you by the mods. As well, remember that we all had to start with a first effort. Time and practice will improve your work and your instincts about it. Good for you for passing this first milestone.

@ LloydOxton

Several of the top writers on the site are dyslexic, so please don't let that hold you back. It is understandable if you have to put more time into your work, but please persevere. I was a senior story moderator for about three years and would be happy to offer you any advice you need. It may help to have some people that you can rely on to proofread and edit your work.

I think you are missing the point here. Let me give you another example. I am not a Jew and do not follow Judaism but I would not walk into a Jewish butcher and demand a pork pie or a bacon sandwich and then sue him because he wouldn't sell me one. Would you?
I believe it is every persons right to be whatever they wish to be, to follow whatever doctrine they want to follow PROVIDED they do not expect others to do as they want them to.
There is a well known phrase:
"You cannot have your cake and eat it!"
I am happy that gay people have rights, I am happy that disabled people have access and I am happy that different races and religions are treated equally UNTIL... these people begin to insist that others have to do as they are told regardless of their own feelings.
"I cannot sleep in YOUR hotel so I will take it away from you!"
"I cannot get on YOUR bus so I will take it away from you!"
"I want to force my daughter to marry her cousin and I DEMAND that you allow it!"
I know of and fully support Human rights legislation up to the point that it becomes a tool to override someone else's human rights!

If you think I am bigoted because of this, read my bio and my stories and then come back to me.

I was explaining the state of the law and why a claim could be made. I did not call you a bigot. Sometimes what is legal and what each of us think is right are two different things.

Topic Christian groups now more accepting of homosexuals
Posted 21 Dec 2015 14:17

Annamagique, I think that you will find that most jurisdictions that have human rights legislation include sexual orientation as one of the grounds upon which one may not discriminate. What that means is that you cannot discriminate against people in the provision of goods and services if you own a business. You are not permitted to choose your clients or customers based on any of these parameters. It is no different from rejecting African-Americans based on skin colour before the Civil Rights Act outlawed such discrimination.

The day after the deadly attacks in Paris, Parisians began posting photos of themselves “en terrasse” in cafes and bistros around the capital. Social media has been full of pictures with the #JeSuisEnTerrasse hashtag. Many of the photos were accompanied by messages of support for the city and its residents, to the effect of “We must keep living!” as the ultimate resistance to terror.

Topic Night of Terror - Paris - Nov 13, 2015
Posted 14 Nov 2015 16:40

To me, Paris is a symbol of all that is good and fine in the world. I've been there three times, my most recent visit being in May, and have a deep affection for the people there. It's so sad to see what happened there. Even more saddening is the senselessness of terrorism. How do people get to a place where killing innocents is viewed as somehow acceptable? I don't understand it.

This. ^^^

I was in Paris again this summer. I love it. And it is the home of intellectualism, arts, democratic values and so much more. They pride themselves on their secular society. All of this is anathema to the terrorists.

I think that we are dealing with people who operate in an alternate universe from ours. They love death and destruction of any and all who are not like them. What we consider to be common human values do not apply. They hate. They hate modern society and freedom of expression. They hate Christians, Jews, Hindus, Muslims not like them, and everyone else. They subjugate women and hate them too. The threat of death means nothing to them as they believe they will enter paradise on the basis of their barbaric acts. They wish to change the world to mirror their world view.

I worry that attacks like this will multiply and become more frequent in Europe and in North America. The Atlantic will not shield us from this now declared war. I fear that it will cost us not only in blood but in the very values of liberal democracy that the terrorists abhor. There will be pressure to give up on civil liberties in free societies inch by inch to fight this scourge. If we let that go too far as a price for feeling safe, they have won because they will have undone the freedoms that we all take for granted.

After a couple of weeks of optimism here in Canada after the election of a new Liberal government, this changes everything. Innocent idealism does not survive well after this.

I wish Parisians the strength and courage to get through this. I wish that for all of us.

I try to post thanks on the walls of readers who are my friends, but do not individually message others who are not friends who have left comments on my work. More recently we can like or leave a response to a comment on a story, but I do not always keep up with that. I guess that makes me a member of this lazy ingrates club.

I would like to thank all of those who read my work and the collaborations that I have done with Alphamagus and Milik the Red. I appreciate the time that you have taken to read, vote, and/or comment more than I can say. The satisfaction of writing requires readers.

I especially have to thank all of those who have read "Stacey's Choice", the first story I wrote on my own. It is now just over fifty views away from a badge for 30,000 views. If you want to help push it over the top, here is the url:

Topic 9 Killed in the Shooting of Historically Black AME Church
Posted 19 Jun 2015 13:52

President Obama has stated that the place for the Confederate flag is in a museum and not flying over the state house. It is time for it only to be visible there.

The Republican presidential candidates have to stop framing this as an anti-Christian act and acknowledge what is in front of their noses. It is blatantly racist. The shooter said so himself, accompanying his shots with a racist rant. He said he wanted to shoot blacks and to start a race war. So, white right wing politicians should stop couching this in terms of religion, and thereby somehow connecting it to their coded racism by denying it is a racial hate crime. They have been playing this game for generations, and unfortunately it still flies in certain areas of the United States.

We should all be thinking about the lost potential of those killed and the tragedy of an 87-year-old women who lost her life this way. Yes, this is about the easy availability of guns, but it is on its face a racist act.

Topic Milik's Erotic Menagerie
Posted 10 Jun 2015 13:31

I was happy to partner with Milik the first time we discussed it. Anyone who has read his work knows that he is more than capable of writing on his own. That this collaboration on "Legal Intrigue" would carry on with a five-part story, "Power Play", was unexpected. We seem to work effortlessly together. I am grateful for this experience and the stories that we created. We hoped to write something compelling, that would keep readers wondering what would happen next with both stories. I believe we succeeded. It would be my pleasure to collaborate with Milik again.
