You can put a pretty bow on it with any sex punishments or gifts, but failing to take responsibility and stop hurting her will end your relationship. Apologize, work on your issues, and let her know you're doing so.

This. Flowers and chocolate are not bad, but a gift certificate for a day of pampering at a spa would be better. Along with a promise to better communicate from now on and an apology.

I think BiMale73 has it right. If you offer goods or services to the public, you have to offer them to everyone without prejudice. A kosher butcher cannot be faulted for not offering bacon because he does not sell it to anyone. A hotel by definition offers accommodation to the public. They have no right to discriminate among their customers based on their religious beliefs, ethnicity, language, country of origin, or several other grounds including sexual orientation. Sexual orientation has the same status as other grounds in human rights legislation.

A good example of this clash is the county clerk who refused to issue marriage licences to gay couples after the law changed. Was she correct in upholding her religious views or was she imposing them on others? The legal view is that she was in the wrong. The US Constitution clearly separates church and state. It guarantees freedom of religion for all, but not the right to impose their religious values on others in carrying out civil duties.

So, Steph, I understand your being conflicted, but sexual orientation is no different in this context than nationality or other protected grounds. Discrimination is discrimination.

There are gift sets available of trial sizes several scents and a gift coupon for a full size of the one that you like best. That may be a good solution. Remember too that perfume changes with each person's body chemistry.

I like Lauren, Romance, and Flowerbomb. I occasionally wear Chloe and Allure.

If you don't find the tester set I suggested, I would opt for a light, fresh scent as she is not used to wearing perfume.

@ Ophelia

Congratulations. Just keep working at it, taking in any advice given to you by the mods. As well, remember that we all had to start with a first effort. Time and practice will improve your work and your instincts about it. Good for you for passing this first milestone.

@ LloydOxton

Several of the top writers on the site are dyslexic, so please don't let that hold you back. It is understandable if you have to put more time into your work, but please persevere. I was a senior story moderator for about three years and would be happy to offer you any advice you need. It may help to have some people that you can rely on to proofread and edit your work.

I think you are missing the point here. Let me give you another example. I am not a Jew and do not follow Judaism but I would not walk into a Jewish butcher and demand a pork pie or a bacon sandwich and then sue him because he wouldn't sell me one. Would you?
I believe it is every persons right to be whatever they wish to be, to follow whatever doctrine they want to follow PROVIDED they do not expect others to do as they want them to.
There is a well known phrase:
"You cannot have your cake and eat it!"
I am happy that gay people have rights, I am happy that disabled people have access and I am happy that different races and religions are treated equally UNTIL... these people begin to insist that others have to do as they are told regardless of their own feelings.
"I cannot sleep in YOUR hotel so I will take it away from you!"
"I cannot get on YOUR bus so I will take it away from you!"
"I want to force my daughter to marry her cousin and I DEMAND that you allow it!"
I know of and fully support Human rights legislation up to the point that it becomes a tool to override someone else's human rights!

If you think I am bigoted because of this, read my bio and my stories and then come back to me.

I was explaining the state of the law and why a claim could be made. I did not call you a bigot. Sometimes what is legal and what each of us think is right are two different things.

Annamagique, I think that you will find that most jurisdictions that have human rights legislation include sexual orientation as one of the grounds upon which one may not discriminate. What that means is that you cannot discriminate against people in the provision of goods and services if you own a business. You are not permitted to choose your clients or customers based on any of these parameters. It is no different from rejecting African-Americans based on skin colour before the Civil Rights Act outlawed such discrimination.

The day after the deadly attacks in Paris, Parisians began posting photos of themselves “en terrasse” in cafes and bistros around the capital. Social media has been full of pictures with the #JeSuisEnTerrasse hashtag. Many of the photos were accompanied by messages of support for the city and its residents, to the effect of “We must keep living!” as the ultimate resistance to terror.

Topic Night of Terror - Paris - Nov 13, 2015

To me, Paris is a symbol of all that is good and fine in the world. I've been there three times, my most recent visit being in May, and have a deep affection for the people there. It's so sad to see what happened there. Even more saddening is the senselessness of terrorism. How do people get to a place where killing innocents is viewed as somehow acceptable? I don't understand it.

This. ^^^

I was in Paris again this summer. I love it. And it is the home of intellectualism, arts, democratic values and so much more. They pride themselves on their secular society. All of this is anathema to the terrorists.

I think that we are dealing with people who operate in an alternate universe from ours. They love death and destruction of any and all who are not like them. What we consider to be common human values do not apply. They hate. They hate modern society and freedom of expression. They hate Christians, Jews, Hindus, Muslims not like them, and everyone else. They subjugate women and hate them too. The threat of death means nothing to them as they believe they will enter paradise on the basis of their barbaric acts. They wish to change the world to mirror their world view.

I worry that attacks like this will multiply and become more frequent in Europe and in North America. The Atlantic will not shield us from this now declared war. I fear that it will cost us not only in blood but in the very values of liberal democracy that the terrorists abhor. There will be pressure to give up on civil liberties in free societies inch by inch to fight this scourge. If we let that go too far as a price for feeling safe, they have won because they will have undone the freedoms that we all take for granted.

After a couple of weeks of optimism here in Canada after the election of a new Liberal government, this changes everything. Innocent idealism does not survive well after this.

I wish Parisians the strength and courage to get through this. I wish that for all of us.

I try to post thanks on the walls of readers who are my friends, but do not individually message others who are not friends who have left comments on my work. More recently we can like or leave a response to a comment on a story, but I do not always keep up with that. I guess that makes me a member of this lazy ingrates club.

I would like to thank all of those who read my work and the collaborations that I have done with Alphamagus and Milik the Red. I appreciate the time that you have taken to read, vote, and/or comment more than I can say. The satisfaction of writing requires readers.

I especially have to thank all of those who have read "Stacey's Choice", the first story I wrote on my own. It is now just over fifty views away from a badge for 30,000 views. If you want to help push it over the top, here is the url:

Again I appreciate all of those who read the stories. I take your comments to heart. flower

Topic 9 Killed in the Shooting of Historically Black AME Church
Posted 19 Jun 2015 13:52

President Obama has stated that the place for the Confederate flag is in a museum and not flying over the state house. It is time for it only to be visible there.

The Republican presidential candidates have to stop framing this as an anti-Christian act and acknowledge what is in front of their noses. It is blatantly racist. The shooter said so himself, accompanying his shots with a racist rant. He said he wanted to shoot blacks and to start a race war. So, white right wing politicians should stop couching this in terms of religion, and thereby somehow connecting it to their coded racism by denying it is a racial hate crime. They have been playing this game for generations, and unfortunately it still flies in certain areas of the United States.

We should all be thinking about the lost potential of those killed and the tragedy of an 87-year-old women who lost her life this way. Yes, this is about the easy availability of guns, but it is on its face a racist act.

I was happy to partner with Milik the first time we discussed it. Anyone who has read his work knows that he is more than capable of writing on his own. That this collaboration on "Legal Intrigue" would carry on with a five-part story, "Power Play", was unexpected. We seem to work effortlessly together. I am grateful for this experience and the stories that we created. We hoped to write something compelling, that would keep readers wondering what would happen next with both stories. I believe we succeeded. It would be my pleasure to collaborate with Milik again.

Topic HELP!!! Before I submit
Posted 10 Mar 2015 20:13

May I ask why LushStories does not permit the publication of fan-fiction? I have a friend who is currently in the middle of writing her 47th chapter on her fan-fic', and she was distressed to find out that LushStories won't publish her work. She's spent the best part of 7 months writing her piece. It's saved into 48 individual documents (prologue is seperate from the rest) so that all the chapters can be uploaded at once so anyone who reads it won't have to wait too long for the next chapter to be uploaded. If a mod can get through 47 chapters in 2 days, then the entire thing could be up in two days, from whenever she's done. But I'm rambling. As my original question asks, how come LushStories won't permit the publication of fan-fic' based novels?

For the record, any author may post only one story per day. So, in theory, it would take forty-seven days at minimum to post this story. That assumes that each part meets Lush standards and does not have to be sent back for editing. As well, given that the queue is steadily at about fifty stories daily, it would likely take longer for all parts to be posted. Even without the rule limiting one story per day, to ask that forty-seven chapters be done in two days is not a realistic expectation.

Topic Lush's high standards
Posted 05 Mar 2015 14:44

Self publishing resource: I think it implies generality instead of quality, or a place for novices and amateurs. I also think that comparison of Lush with other story sites is inappropriate as in addition to the stories, Lush is also a adult social media.

Qualitative improvement is a continuous process and one of the method may be that after approval of a story, a team of distinguished mods grade and score that story. I think three shades can be worked out as Excellent, Good and Average. Stories with excellent and Good grading should remain visible to all and Average shade stories may only be visible to author or their friends. However, members may score stories as they like. In this way, quality stuff would remain in forefront !

While a good idea in theory, this would not be feasible for a number of reasons. Moderators have a difficult enough time keeping up with the stories in the queue without rating them. For now they look for technical and compliance issues, and leave the judgment to readers and their taste. They have the ability to award RRs and nominate EPs for quality and exceptional work respectively. There are many stories on Lush which would merit neither but are nonetheless popular with readers. Moderators get enough push back from writers regarding required edits to stories without adding this subjective judgment to their responsibilities. I frankly do not think writers here, whom I have been reminded are amateurs, would appreciate such a system.

(I should add that while I am no longer a moderator, I was one for about three years.)

Topic How To Win An EP By Accident... (A lecture on writing poetry...)
Posted 26 Jan 2015 15:14

RRs are given out by moderators to work that they think is exceptionally good, work that might not be noticed otherwise. The standard is the quality of the story or poem, not the author or whether they have received an RR or EP before. They are not meant to be handed out indiscriminately. Individual moderators may award them based on their own judgment.

EPs are awarded much less frequently and voted on by a panel composed of some of the site's best writers, not all of whom are moderators. There is also a Series award for a multi-part story that is exceptional. It is voted on by the same panel.

Given that any and all of these are awarded for excellence, it is not surprising that some of the talented writers here have more than one.

I think that Stephen's "by accident" reference was meant to communicate that he was surprised, and maybe that you cannot set out to win anything when you write it except perhaps for a competition entry.

Topic Advice before submitting a story
Posted 25 Jan 2015 16:46

Principessa,

Can you tell me how to format dates and times in stories? Where I come from (England), dates would be written in DD/MM/YYYY format (my birthday is 25/09/1950, for instance), and times in textual format as either something like 14.02, or 2.02PM.

How do you want them formatted in stories that go in Lush. A story I've submitted has a time in it of 6.00PM. Is this acceptable? If not, then how should I write it?

Any advice you can give will be gratefully received.

Many thanks,

I happened to notice this. I am no longer a moderator, but am happy to help with your question.

I think that as with the -or/-our or s/z issues in UK versus US spelling, that day/month/year or month/day/year are acceptable so long as they are consistent within your story. I do think that in North America, we generally do not use the 24-hour clock if not in the military, except perhaps in Quebec (where it would be rooted in French custom).
