You can also change your status to "away" so that the chat boxes will not open from strangers. I discovered that quickly when I was new. If you do this you can still open one to chat with someone who interests you. If you wish to be here entirely under the radar, you can go into your account details - settings - and change your online status to "invisible".

Don't let the idiots get you down. They can be avoided.

Topic Chapters or a very long story?
Posted 07 Feb 2013 15:34

It is hard to answer without reading your story, but I will try.

You are permitted to go to 10,000 words in your story, so you have that option. Alternately, you can stop wherever you come to a logical break in your story. While a sex scene may seem mandatory, if your story is compelling enough, people will come back to read what happens next. The choice is yours but interestingly both avenues rely on the same thing: holding the interest of the reader.

I have written stories that stood alone and an episodic series with a friend here. In the episodic series, we tried to finish each chapter at a point where more was expected to happen soon.

There is one exception to the limited use of italics for emphasis. You may use them if you include the text of a letter in your narrative to set it apart from the rest of the story.

Topic Replying to the Moderator who approves your story?

Considering the time and effort that goes into reading and editing stories here, the notes about issues and how they should be fixed when a story is sent back, or notes about edits that have been made as hints for next time, why would writers not thank mods?

I appreciate it when a note with a thank you arrives. Personally, I think it is part of good manners. I say thank you all the time to people who do things for me. It costs nothing and makes someone feel good about what they have done.

Edit: I should have thanked Phoenix69 for being so gracious and all of you who have posted thanks here. So, thank you. flower

Topic Formatting Dialogue
Posted 22 Jan 2013 13:04

Here is some further information in response to a question about using italics for dialogue.

I think you can use italics for emphasis, but not as a substitute for properly formatted dialogue. So, it is okay for a word or phrase or sentence, but to use italics consistently is like putting an exclamation point at the end of every sentence. It loses its power and is wrong.

I have seen it and think it would work to differentiate something like the text of a letter from the rest of the narrative and dialogue. That would be the exception that would, I think, be okay.

Topic Script Style Writing
Posted 20 Jan 2013 09:16

I don't know the exact style of script writing, but a friend of mine wrote this, some bits are kind of like reading a script. There was no issue with it being submitted and published, but like I say it's not strictly a script.

I think that the narrative between the script style bits made that one acceptable.

Topic My story has been rejected again: Help!!!!

I would second Shylass's advice. Review the resources suggested by the story moderator. Check spelling carefully and without relying on spell check which allows mistakes that are words. A spelling mistake in the title is not a good start. Leave your story alone for a while and go back and check it again with fresh eyes. You have to recognize that there is time and work involved in getting better. Numerous checks and edits are necessary.

Read the additional resources not on the mod's suggestion list. There is value in refreshing your memory about grammar and punctuation.

Look at the stories in the Editors' Pick category as examples of good writing, both in the sense of literacy and the quality of the story. While you may not be able to tell as good a story on your first try, you certainly can work to make it correct as these are.

There is a thread which would be helpful to you:

Topic Bacon how do you like it?

What's the yellow crumbles/crumbs on it?
I love Canadian bacon.

It is cornmeal, Chef K, and the meat is cured pork loin. The stuff they sell in the States as Canadian bacon is some form of ham, I think. Here we always call it peameal bacon. I think long ago it was coated with meal of dried peas rather than corn - hence the name.

At St. Lawrence Market, one of the oldest in North America, the traditional thing to eat on Saturday mornings as you shop is a peameal bacon sandwich.

Topic At least 18 children and 9 others dead in Connecticut school shooting. Does this change your mind ab
Posted 20 Dec 2012 10:40

That's a little unfair. I'm asking legitimate questions and I'm not deflecting from the real issue. But I do want to know what happened, and more importantly, why it happened. Like most people, I was glued to the television immediately after it happened. There WERE several reports of a second shooter, a man wearing black and camouflage that was found hiding in the woods outside the school. I saw and heard it with my own eyes and ears as it was said on live TV. If the man found in the woods had nothing to do with the school shooting, someone should let us know. If he was involved in any capacity, we need to know. Silence on the issue will lead to conspiracy theories.

I have watched a lot of the coverage and not heard or seen any of that. I apologize if that is indeed the case and I misunderstood.

I read LM's post.

And now the conspiracy theories will begin, deflecting attention from the real issues of a violent society and culture, inadequate support and treatment for mental health issues, and inadequate regulation of and limitations on guns.

Even more amusing is that these discussions scare people into buying more guns because they're afraid they won't be able to later on.

Amusing? I can't imagine the mind that could perceive anything in these events as amusing. It does give me some insight into the mind of someone who may have guns but shouldn't, given how little you value human life.

There was apparently a spike in gun sales over the weekend, just in case there is regulation in the future. Many of these guns are purchased at gun shows, where no background checks are done. Surely even those of you who do not want regulation would agree that this loophole should be closed.

In November Americans bought more than 2 million guns. On Black Friday, the FBI reported more than 154,000 background checks for gun purchases. There are more stores selling guns in the US than McDonald's. And that does not include all of the gun shows and sales there which skip the background checks. (from ABC News)

Why is this necessary?

if someone dies for a crime they didn't commit, I'm okay with that.

Really? Even if it were a relative, friend, or your partner? You would just say oops...... So you are okay with taking an innocent life after all, despite your argument against abortion. Only in this instance it is a real, living human being. So who is illogical?

Becky, what happens when someone is wrongfully convicted? It is bad enough to spend time in prison for a crime you did not commit, but to die for it? These cases do happen. What would you do about it?
