Topic Turnout At Elections - A Democratic Dilemma
Posted 07 May 2017 11:40

Participation, in and of itself, is crap. Imagine if 100% of the voters turned out and then made completely random choices. Hard to imagine that turning out any better, right? What's needed is voter involvement in the debate on the issues and in the selection of the candidates. If 10% of the people showed up and made wise choices based on the facts I'd be all for that.

This. Yes, a higher turnout would be nice, but it would be better if it was accompanied by a boost in voter education and engagement, else we'd just get more Trumps or worse (think Dutarte in the Philippines). Though it's likely the other way around: Boosting voter education and engagement would boost turnout since voters who know the issues, political philosophies, etc. would be more likely to vote.

Though, to be honest, I'm a fairly politically astute voter and I'm drawing closer and closer to "abstaining" as the French say. The choices just aren't that great anymore and I'm becoming more and more disenchanted with government as we do it.

I have some users on the board I admin who refuse to vote. They are anarchists and refuse to participate in a government system that they don't support. They want a more consensus and community based system. People sharing their goods and talents instead of collecting salaries and that sort of thing.

Topic When a guy tells you their sexual experience. What does it mean?
Posted 07 May 2017 11:02

Not sure. I doubt I'd discuss something like that with just anyone myself, but I find I'm not much of a typical guy. Usually, when a guy pulls some sexual thing out of his ass (other than a dildo Regaeman Man ), it's usually boasting but I can't really see being a voyeur at a sex party as something you boast about. So, dontknow

No it's not. It's a full stop. icon_smile

The Rangers goalie needed a few more full stops yesterday. Ottawa beat them to take the lead in their playoff series.

Do you ever get caught up in a struggle to get a story approved? Every once in a while a moderator will find something that does not work for them. Try as you will you are simply not sure what it is they want you to correct. I'm in that little game now with a story I'm collaborating on. It will work out, surely. I hope a few people will find it entertaining when it gets approved.

I've had a fair bit of luck with moderation. Minor stuff, but nothing that caused a struggle. Did ditch one story after a rejection because I had kind of given up on it and only posted it to get it off my plate and move on to something else.

At last count, Jeff, Tanya, and Hannah were all feeling a bit sup-par. Hope y'all get better soon and we don't have to endure a dose of cyber flu.

On the plus side, Simplicity and Milik are on the mend.

Meanwhile, hot coffee is on the way.

For the rest of you, there's a generous selection of 'enhancers' if coffee is what ya want plus the usual assortment of fine adult beverages. So what'll it be?

Topic Interacting with your audience
Posted 04 May 2017 09:56

So, I've been getting some really good comments on my new stories (See my current sig) and have been responding to more of them than I usually do. Do other authors interact with your audience much in this way? Or do you just read the comments and move on. Not sure if it really accomplishes anything, but I know that the few times I've had an author respond to one of my comments, it's made me feel better about that author and more interested in their work.

Posted 04 May 2017 08:10

i'm way prettier than all these pitches.

(my mother says so!)

love10

I always find "real" women prettier than posed and primped celebs. There's a couple ladies at work who are very much my definition of pretty. Alas, can't post pics of them.

One celeb who do I find pretty, and increasingly so as she gets further into her twenties, is singer Selena Gomez. Her recent haircut just improved things. The fact that she has the good taste to keep dating Canadians (first Justin Bieber and now The Weeknd) is just icing on the cake.

Topic Lesbian's
Posted 04 May 2017 06:07

By definition, wouldn't this woman be bi-curious or bisexual by making this request? Just a thought.

The question presumes that the woman in question identifies as straight prior to making the request but you're right, once the request is made, that suggests she is at least "curious". If she goes through with it and enjoys it, then maybe bisexual. However, I think the question is phrased correctly since the woman is presumably known to be openly straight to the lesbian receiving the request.

Baseball. Pshaw. We're still in hockey season here in the Great White North. And there's actually Canadian teams in the playoffs this year (Ottawa Senators and Edmonton Oilers made the second round).

Coffee with a shot of whiskey, please.

Simple, prepared stuff a lot, IIRC from my bachelor (which were short-lived since I met my wife in grad school). Boil some noodles and pour jarred, pre-mixed spaghetti sauce on it. Hamburger Helper or similar. Get prepared, ready-to-heat meals that some grocery stores sell. Hot dogs, sausages or similar that require just quick, simple boiling or frying.

PS. I'm a gunslinger. See y'all later in another dimension.

Actually, had it been made back when King originally wrote The Gunslinger, I believe Clint was one of his preferred choices for Roland. Alas, it took so long to get the series finished and then get someone working on the film that Clint kind of aged out of the part (though I would have loved to see him direct).

Topic What is your favorite Diner chain? (in the USA & Canada)
Posted 03 May 2017 13:07

The best American and Canadian diner chains:

Waffle House
Denny’s
Huddle House
Hojo's
IHOP
Big Boy
Shoney’s
The Original Pancake House
Salisbury House

Actually, we don't have most of those up here in any large numbers. Denny's is around and I think there are some Big Boy. The others may be up here and just not in my area, I suppose. So I can't really pick one as I haven't been to most of them (IHOP, yeah, but it was a long time ago). And diner food isn't really my thing generally anyway.

Posted 02 May 2017 09:10

Quick thought based on one comment: If you happen to read A Bride's Awakening first instead of Wedding Night Blues, put that in your comment. I think of "Bride" as being the "sequel" and wrote it second but at least one person read them the other way around and I kind of hoped this pair of stories would work in both directions.

Topic Does anyone use the blog feature on Lush?
Posted 02 May 2017 09:08

As far as I know, it isn't possible to comment on blogs or even to like them.

Has anyone ever suggested this in the "new feature request" thread? Though it could also lead to serious s&&tstorms, the ability to respond to blogs might get the feature used more.

i find that when i transfer my from word to the submit box it makes extra spaces between paragraphs.

Do you just use a regular paste (CTRL-V or whatever is the Mac equivalent) or do you click the "Paste from Word" button that is specifically for pasting from Word in the submission box? If you use the latter, it should work properly (did for my last three submissions at any rate). It's the one in my screen shot below.

Topic Re-writing stories

Seeker, I supect it is a matter of habit. When I was acting, I worked with the playwrights and directors. At least for stage plays, the dialogue has to convey and carry the story. The craft of people changing through dialogue is an interesting one and translates well to short story fiction (my favorite to write).

Ah, that explains a lot. I don't have the stage background (always wanted to try my hand at acting, but have never had the chance) but I do enjoy plays and can see how that would influence your writing.

Just passing through on my way to the cancer center. Today is my last chemotherapy session. I'll be getting IVs there, so no need for a drink.

A friend (actually, my co-admin) on another board went through chemo last year (cervical cancer). She's in great shape right now. Retired but self-employed and working harder than she did when she was officially employed. Hope it works out as well for you.

I'll have some of Bertha's finest liberally seasoned with Beaver's Breath. 53 years ago today, the BASIC computer programming language came out. While it was the first programming language I learned (back c. 1988 on the classic Commodore C64, one of the greatest personal computers ever designed IMHO), I had not realized it was older than me (by a year).

Topic Re-writing stories

My non-erotica is very abbreviated and dialogue rich with little description. I am finding that doesn't easily work with erotica (at least not for me). Subsequently, I am having to develop new "muscles" in descriptive prose. That made me consider going back to some older non-erotica that might be enhanced by better description.

I think, I'll let the older ones stand as is for now.

I'll have to give some of yours a whirl, I guess. I'm not sure how you could write erotica without a lot of description but I'm willing to learn.

Topic The best movie of 2017...so far
Posted 02 May 2017 05:36

I saw Colossal a few days ago and that actually really stuck with me. It's hard to recommend to people because the premise is strange and it's a little flawed but it had good performances and a story that is more profound than it seems.

It's actually fairly high on my list. I like strange, quirky movies and I like kaiju so this seems like a natural for me (though I will confess to not being a big Anne Hathaway fan which may work against it).

Topic 2 spaces between sentences

Do you mean spaces between lines or spaces between the period at the end of a sentence and the next letter?

D X

Given that he started another thread on the former issue, I assume the latter. I learned typing on a manual back in high school (mumble mumble years ago) but broke myself of the two spaces after a period habit back in the nineties. Modern word processors use proportional spacing and don't require the extra space for anything.

I think you do but a current mod can confirm. I'm copying and pasting using the "Paste from Word" function and both of my new stories went in OK. Did the text you pasted have an extra carriage return between paragraphs or something?

I love tarantulas (I don't have a pet one)! Like a decade ago, my wife and I were hiking in Picket Wire Canyon (dinosaurs tracks!) during tarantula migration season, where the males are wandering around looking to get laid. We saw over 20 of them. Scary, but so beautiful. I grew unafraid enough over the afternoon to get really close to several of them, though I never picked one up. The colors are amazing.

Lucky. I've hiked once in an area where they were native but it was the wrong time of year. Would have loved to see one in the wild.

Texel is actually part of Holland. Holland consists of two Dutch provinces: North and South Holland. It's only a small part of the Netherlands.

Ah, Simon addressed this already.

Back to apostrophes now.

I didn't (there, I used a apostrophe to make my post on topic glasses8 ) know this. My son's (note: If I left out the apostrophe there, it would not be clear how many sons I have, though I only have the one) best friend's Dad is a Dutch immigrant and I've just always used Netherlands around him so he's never had a chance to correct me. I did know it as "Holland" when I was a kid, but have known and used the proper name since at least university.
