Deep breaths

She takes a deep breath,
Then another,
Finally a step.
One tiny baby step,
But still a step in the right direction.

Every day since her world fell apart
A fight, just to stay breathing,
To eat, to get out of bed, to keep existing,
Tying to remember she has some worth
Even though he didn’t find her worth keeping.

She takes a deep breath,
Then another,
No steps that day.
Some days it is hard enough
To not go backwards, not fall down.

The darkness seemed impenetrable,
Everlasting and all-consuming.
Slowly, shades of grey started to sneak in,
Moments of some calm,
Fragments without despair.

She takes a deep breath,
Then another,
Making sure every step counts.
One day it will be time to stop existing
And start living again.
