No Slumber

He came to me with soft, careful words,
And I took him.
He brought to me the touch of a blissful lover,
And I felt him.
He kissed my skin and stirred its desire,
And I laid myself down for him.
He captured my heart and fed my soul,
And I fell for him.

And, then…in a flash
It was gone.

Gone were the gentle whisperings of need and want
Into ears that were hungry to hear them.
Gone were the eyes that haunted my own
Eyes that still ache to see them.
Gone was the laughter, the playful banter as well
To the body that was starving to embrace it
Gone was the body I’d so gratefully laid next to
But I never knew how much I would miss it.

In the silence of this unoccupied room
(A room body occupies, but mind long escaped)
I lie awake in this bed, alone, until dawn
Reliving the entirety of my mistakes.
And I wonder who, in this very dark hour,
Is holding him close in the night?
As the clock drones on and my heart breaks again
For every wrong I wish I could right.

He came to me in a time I can never recover
And I had no idea how much it all meant.
He awoke me from the deepest, saddest slumber
And now
I cannot sleep again.
