has it been that long ago
since we made all those plans?
How we would grow old together,
laughing our way through life,
doing all the things we loved so much.
You did all the foolish things, yet no one
dared call you a fool, for you saw
through the real fools, and you let them pass.
Life has a way of evening things out,
but you drew the short straw and never
let on. Turns out yours was the longest of all.
We never reached our goal, but you
made the little things seem great,
even when we fell down along the way.
I wanted to cry, but you wouldn't let me.
I wanted to rage, but you soothed me.
You wanted to laugh, so we roared.
Has it really been that long, old friend?
I grow gray and uncertain of my future
and you will always be forever young.
The years have passed, not always
kind, not always easy, never slowing,
but your memory never fades.
It is strong, it is fresh, it is vibrant,
and it is a reminder of a day long ago
when we made our plans; our pact.
That we would grow old and our
friendship would flourish like fine wine
and the cup would never be empty.
You are gone now, off to another existence
and I am all that is left, always wondering
when I will meet you again, old friend.
