The Wall Between Us

Is the end result worth the journey?
There is a wall between us.
It is much too wide to walk around.
And at first glance, it seems too high to climb.
And yet, we have climbed it many times.

You on your side.
And me on mine.

Straining, stretching, reaching, climbing, and
ultimately making a connection at the top.
When we touch, we find joy and light and magic
and revel in the beauty of just being together.

Inevitably though, our footing becomes treacherous,
and we each tumble back to earth.
As we fall, we get battered and bruised and feel the pain of defeat.

Each time we look up, the climb seems higher
and we wonder if the journey is worth the effort.
Each time, in the past, we have found the strength to climb again.

This time, as we talk together...
You on your side.
And me on mine.
I wonder if we can find the strength and courage to make the climb.

While I wait and think, I will sit on my side of the wall collecting buttercups.
I will admire their radiant beauty and think about all the joy that they give me,
and I know I will find the courage to climb again.
