I sit at the coffee shop near my home and sip at my lemonade while typing up my paper for my English 116B class. I come here every Sunday and order the same thing: lemonade with a berry croissant. I always use this time to finish up my weekend homework, since I'm a professional procrastinator. This is my first semester of college, and I think I'm handling it pretty well. I look up at the door and freeze. Holy shit, that's Leo Jackson.
He's a singer that I've been following since his first single; and he's staring at me
. I feel my blush flood my cheeks and I look down at my laptop. When I look back up, he's no longer looking at me and I feel a twinge of disappointment. I try to focus on my paper once more and find myself lost in the words. I jump when I hear a voice next to me.
"Hi, I don't normally do this... but do you think I could sit down?" He's standing behind the chair next to me, and when I nod he slowly pulls it out and sits down,"I'm Leo," He holds his hand out to me and I shake it.
"I'm Angie Lu, and I know who you are. You have a beautiful voice," I say quietly. I can't seem to find my voice, but I think I might puke.
"Thank you, Angie, and you have a beautiful name," he says and takes a drink of his coffee. The blush creeps up my cheeks once more and I pick at my croissant. His hair is short and blonde; but his eyes are dark, almost a chocolate brown and much darker in person. They hold mine, and I find that I have a hard time looking away from him.
"So what're you working on? I hope you don't mind me asking," he says and motions to my laptop.
"Oh, I'm just finishing my essay for my English class," I answer and save my draft, just in case.
"Ahh, I see. I don't want to keep you from your work..." He seems serious in his words, but not as convincing in his eyes.
"Maybe you could call me some time? If you wanted to, of course." I can't believe I just said that... I've never been that forward in my life.
"Oh? I'd love to." He slides his phone towards me, and I save my number with a smile emoji next to my name. He takes it back from me, and smiles when he's seen the new addition to his contacts.
"Great, thank you. I'll try to call you sometime this week?" I nod enthusiastically and he stands.
"It was wonderful meeting you, Angie," he breathes and I've seemed to have lost the ability to move. I take a deep breath and pull my eyes from his towards my croissant. I look up at him again and grin wide.
"I'm really glad I met you, Leo." He takes a drink of his coffee and sticks his phone into his back pants pocket and walks away, a small smile on his face.
I barely manage the 1,000 word limit for my paper, but once it's done I slide my laptop into it's case and hurry out. I walk briskly outside towards the bus stop. When it finally arrives, I step inside and show my student pass to the driver. He smiles and nods, and I make my way back to my usual seat. I put my headphones into my ears and close my eyes; the music taking me away and I smile to myself.
When I feel the bus slow, I look up and see we're at my stop. I hop up and smile at the driver as I exit. I hurry down the street, and around the corner to my house. I unlock the door and call for my roommate.
"Lauren? Are you home?"
"Yep! I'm in the back!" she yells and I toss my bag on the couch and run to the computer room.
I plop down on the couch and she looks over at me,"Why do you look like that?"
"Like what?" I ask and she starts laughing.
"You just look weird. I dunno."
"Well... You'll never guess who I saw today."
"Hmm... Is it someone I hate? Because if it's someone I hate, I don't wanna know," she says and I laugh.
"No... Definitely not someone you hate... It was Leo Jackson." Her jaw drops and she stares at me.
"Did you take a picture of him? You could probably like... sell it to a magazine or something."
"Nope, no photo... but he did come and sit with me."
"No!" she says and turns her chair to face me, her twitter forgotten.
"Yes! I gave him my number, too! He said he's going to call me sometime this week!!" I gush and brush my bangs from my face.
"What a bitch! I knew I should've gone with you this morning..." she says and shakes her head,"That's awesome, though. Seriously... you deserve it. So are you going to go on a date or something?"
"Honestly, I don't really know. I guess I'll just wait and see if he actually calls me."
"Girl, are you kidding? Of course he's going to call you! Look at you! You're beautiful!" she says and I have to reflect her huge grin.
"He's gorgeous... I wanted to cry."
"I'm surprised you didn't... But ok, I've gotta Google him. Then we can fangirl together," she murmurs with a wink. I lean forward against my knees so I can see the computer better. My cheeks heat up again when I see picture after picture of him on the screen.
"Fuck, Angie... You're one lucky bitch," she says and hits my arm,"I am so incredibly jealous of you."
I can't contain the smile on my face, and I hug myself as I lean back against the couch.
The days pass by uneventfully... It's already Thursday and I haven't heard from him. Since I don't have class on Fridays and Lauren doesn't work this week, we decide to go get dinner together. She works two weeks, then she's off the next two, and so on; we always try to do something on these Thursdays.
The waitress seats us and I order a lemonade and she orders her usual Pepsi. The waitress leaves to retrieve our drinks and I start looking through the menu. Lauren gets the same thing every time, so she doesn't need to look.
"So he really hasn't called you, yet?" she asks as she slides her menu to the side of the table. I look up at her and frown.
"I thought Thursday nights were about us? Not stupid boys."
"Hey, don't get all grumpy on me... I'm just simply asking you a question. I mean... if he's a fucking asshole, then he's an asshole. I'd just like to know if I need to stop buying his songs on iTunes."
I laugh and say,"No, of course not. I'm just going to see if he calls. If not, then it's not a big deal. I'll just keep fangirling over him and going to school and dealing with you."
"Hey! I am not THAT bad. I personally think I'm a joy to be around," she says and can't keep a straight face longer than a few seconds before she starts laughing. "Ok, ok. I get it. He didn't give you his number, right?"
"Damn. I was going to say you should just call him, but I guess that won't work."
The waitress brings our drinks and and takes our orders. We joke and talk through our meal, and as I stand up to go pay the tab my phone starts to ring. I pull it out of my pocket and see a number I don't recognize. My heart lurches and I give Lauren the check as I walk outside.
"Hi, is this Angie?"
"Leo?" I ask and sit down on a bench just outside the doors.
"Yeah, hey. I'm sorry it took so long for me to call."
"Oh, that's alright. I've been busy anyways."
"Good, good. I was wondering if you would want to go get dinner with me tomorrow? I'll pick you up." I want to jump up and down, but I resist the urge. Lauren walks out and smiles at me when she sees my smile.
"Is it him?" She lips to me and I nod.
"I'd love to," I say,"I can text you my address."
"That's perfect, thanks. I'm really excited to see you," he says and I gasp quietly.
"I'm excited, too, Leo. I'll see you tomorrow, then..." He hangs up and I tuck my phone back into my pocket.
"So?!" Lauren asks and I nod.
"We're going to dinner tomorrow!" I shout and she pulls me into a tight hug.
"Yes! Finally! I'm so happy for you, baby!" she yells and we release each other and walk arm in arm to her car.
I fix my black bangs in the mirror and stare at myself.
"Hey, Lauren?" I call and she comes running in.
"I feel like I should wear make up."
"I can do it for you if you want, but I don't think you need it..."
"I've never been on a date like this before," I say and adjust my sweater.
"Oh, my fucking God. You look beautiful!" She runs her fingers through the back of my hair and adds,"I promise."
The door bell rings and we make eye contact in the mirror.
"Do you want me to get the door?" She asks and smiles, encouragingly.
"I'll get it, I just need to grab my bag."
I open the door and his eyes trail down my body and back up. I'm in skinny jeans, my black Converse, a black sweater, and a grey scarf.
"Hi, are you ready?" he asks and reaches for my hand. I blush softly and he leads me out to the car. I look up at the sky and frown.
"It looks like it's going to rain..." I say and my brow furrows," I hope not, I didn't bring an umbrella."
"I doubt it will," he says and shuts my door before hurrying around to the driver's side. He slides in and we're on our way.
"I don't know if you're cold, but you can turn the heater on if you want, and put the radio on whatever you'd like. We have a bit of a drive ahead of us."
"Oh?" I ask and he chuckles quietly.
"Yeah, it's this restaurant I've been wanting to try for a while. It's about forty minutes away."
I look again towards the clouds and wonder if it will rain on us. It's the middle of November, so it's very possible...
We pull up to the restaurant and he parks. He opens my door for me and we walk inside holding hands. I'm giddy and my smile won't leave my face.
"Two, please," he tells the hostess and she walks us to our table by the window. We sit down, order our drinks, and wait.
"I'm really excited to be here," he says quietly and I smile.
"Me too. It's beautiful, here," I say and look around the restaurant. He reaches across the table and grabs my hand, skimming his thumb over my knuckles.
Something bright flashes in my face and I blink.
"Shit, we gotta go." He says and more flashes come in through the window. He stands up, tosses a twenty dollar bill on the table, and grabs my hand. He pulls me out of the booth and through the restaurant.
"What's going on?" I ask as we run to the car.
"I can't believe they found us, honestly. I don't understand how they do that. They're going to catch up to the car, and if you don't want them to see you, just hide in the back," He says as he opens my door and helps me inside. I sit down and buckle my seat belt as he slides in and the engine roars to life.
The paparazzi crowd around the car, so we're barely rolling. The flashing of the cameras hurts my eyes so I look at Leo. He's gripping the wheel hard and is staring straight ahead.
"Are you ok?" I whisper and he looks over at me, his face softens and he nods.
"Yeah, I'm ok. I just really didn't want this to happen. I didn't see anyone at that coffee shop, so I thought maybe I could get away with it again here. Guess I was wrong."
"Hey, it's ok. It's been an exciting date, so far!" I say, hoping to cheer him up.
"I don't want to take you home, yet, if that's ok?" He asks and finally breaks through the paparazzi surrounding the car. He speeds out of the parking lot and onto the street.
"Maybe we could get some frozen yogurt or something?" He looks around outside and laughs," Who eats frozen yogurt in November?"
"I do. I mean... it's still good no matter what time of year it is." He looks over at me, a smile on his face, and he shakes his head in exasperation.
After we've gotten our frozen yogurt, he parks just off the road and we walk out into the grass.
"I love to come out here and just look down at all the lights." We're up on the side of a hill, looking down at the city lights. He looks completely mesmerized as he eats his yogurt.
"How's your froyo?" I ask quietly and he moans.
"Orgasmic." We both laugh and sit down on the little table,"How's yours?"
"It's really good, thank you."
"It's not much of a dinner..." he says and shrugs.
"I love it. And I think it's much better than dinner." He smiles shyly and continues eating his yogurt.
We sit on the bench laughing and talking, empty cups in our hands.
"What...?" he asks and pauses, looking up at the sky. Another drop lands on his forehead and he looks at me,"Run!" he yells and the drops start to pour down on us. I'm laughing and he's trying to cover me as we make a break for the car.
He opens the passenger door and I dive in, already soaked. I watch him run around to his side and cannot contain my laughter as he jumps in, his hair dripping wet.
"You're a mess!" I say and he shakes his head at me, flinging water droplets everywhere.
"I should probably get you home so you can change, I don't want you to get sick," He says and starts the car.
When we pull up outside the house, he walks me to the door.
"Thank you for coming out with me, I had a really great time," he says quietly and I look up at him and shrug.
"Thank you for taking me out with you! I had a lot of fun..."
"Angie, I just want you to know that I think you're so beautiful, and funny, and smart. I'd love to get to know you better," he whispers and my heart stops.
"Then call me, and we can go something," I whisper back and he steps closer to me," Don't disappear, ok?"
"I'm not going anywhere..." he says and slowly leans down towards me
I stop breathing as he brushes his thumb along my cheek bone and I sigh softly. He smiles infinitesimally and presses his lips to mine. Before it goes too far, he pulls away and smiles at me.
"Is that ok?" he whispers and I nod enthusiastically, "I'll call you tomorrow, beautiful."
He turns away and runs to his car to avoid the rain.
I watch him drive away and smile to myself. He's incredible.
