Going Nowhere

Sadie lay on her side of the bed, alone in the dark room. The curtains were open, streetlamps casting a dim glow through the window, the moon hidden behind a grey cloud. It was a warm night. She could hear the voices and catcalls of people heading home after a night out; their drunken laughs; the odd smash of a bottle. Her eyes flicked to the luminous alarm clock on the bedside table. He should have been home by now. Eleven at the latest, he’d said, but that had been two and a half hours ago and there was still no sign of him. No call, no text… no fucking idea where he was.

She felt the uncertainty creep into her, as it always did on nights like these. She thought of Jake’s muscular frame, his intense green eyes; he could have any woman he wanted. And deep down in her heart, she knew that he’d be with one of his infinite admirers, doing the unthinkable. But despite the lies, cover-ups and endless lonely nights, she still hadn’t ended their farcical relationship. Whenever she started that particular conversation, something else would come up and the next day they’d be back to square one; Jake having won again.

At first she’d thought it was her own insecurities spawning doubts, but as time wore on, all her worst fears had only been confirmed. It was almost like he wanted her to know, what with the secretive phone calls, pathetic alibis and lame excuses. And even though she told herself time and time again that she was going to put an end to it all, months had flown by and she was still stuck in the same place. Somehow, Jake just had the knack of making her fall in love with him over and over again.

With a wistful sigh, Sadie rolled onto her back, staring up at the ceiling as she remembered the very first time she’d fallen for him. It had been a summery Friday night. At the bar across the road from her office building, she’d exchanged the usual gossip with her colleagues before they’d all ended up going their different ways, until it was just her, sitting there alone. And then the bartender had slid another glass towards her, jerking his thumb towards the other end of the bar. She’d glanced sideways, with a furrowed brow, to acknowledge Jake O’Connell. An hour later she couldn’t imagine a more perfect man.

He was intelligent, good-humoured and wonderfully uncomplicated to talk to. She remembered his easy disposition, the way he talked, how well he expressed himself. She remembered how his barstool had edged closer and closer to hers until she could feel the heat of his thigh against hers. And of course, she remembered his hands on her lower back as they shared their first kiss outside the bar, the sense of his raw masculinity. She’d been overwhelmed by the passion, the taste of his lips, the way he’d pulled her against him so she could feel him hard against her stomach. His hands had wandered, but they felt so good against her skin that she hadn’t stopped them, and when he invited her back to his flat, she hadn’t stopped to think. The next morning she’d woken up right next to him; just like she’d done every day since. He was sexy and charming and he could make her laugh at the worst of times. So she’d clung onto him, loving the good times and sweeping the bad ones under the carpet, trying to ignore them, trying to forget.

But tonight would be different, Sadie told herself, mentally gearing up for the confrontation. She’d had enough. If he thought she could just saunter back in here, after being with god-knows-who and act like nothing had happened, well, he’d better think again. In their three year relationship she’d never been unfaithful, not even come close, yet Jake clearly operated from a different moral platform.

If only he wasn’t so charismatic, so damn well irresistible, she wouldn’t have given him the time of day. Every time he lied and cheated, it felt like she’d never be able to look him in the eye again, as if she’d never be able to act like nothing had happened. But no matter how much he broke her heart, one soft word or glance and she was blind to his faults, accepting of his flaws. It seemed like she was forever pushing the dark thoughts and suspicions to a far corner of her mind, unwilling to accept them. But not tonight. Letting out a long breath, she turned to lie on her side, silently awaiting Jake’s return.

She sensed his arrival even before hearing the key turn in the lock. There was the sound of his footsteps as he moved inside and then he shut the door softly in an apparent attempt to stay quiet. She heard him moving around the small apartment, dropping his jacket on the sofa, undressing, turning on the tap in the bathroom. He was humming softly to himself, apparently in good spirits. But then again, Jake was always in good spirits. He had a positive attitude to almost everything; it was part of his allure; the thing that drew Sadie to him in the first place.

But she didn’t want to think about that now. No, tonight it was over. All of his games, this whole charade was damn-well over. She lay on her side, trying to place the song he was now singing under his breath. He had such a lovely voice.

Shit, no. No he didn’t. Sadie mentally chided herself for letting her guard down again as she made an effort to convert Jake’s qualities into flaws. Friendly morphed into flirtatious; intelligent into manipulative… and that was as far as she got before she felt the mattress dip as he slid into bed next to her.

“Hey, you awake?” His fingers moved gently through her hair. “Sorry I’m so late. I just… well you know how it is, right?”

He shifted to lie alongside her, his finger tracing down her spine, up and down, up and down, as he waited for a response. Sadie didn’t move, though she could feel her heartbeat steadily accelerating. Eventually, she caved. “What do you want?”

He laughed then, his deep infectious laugh, and she felt his warm breath on her ear as he whispered, “Sex.” His muscular frame pushed up against her and she could instinctively tell that he was naked.

“No.” Sadie’s voice was tight and unrelenting but somehow it didn’t put him off.

“Hmm.” His mouth moved across her neck, planting delicate kisses along the smooth skin, his hand moving rhythmically up and down her side. “You sure about that?”

“Yes,” Sadie muttered but she made no move to push him away.

“Oh, come on,” Jake murmured teasingly, “You waited up for me, didn’t you?” And his hand slipped beneath her t-shirt, hovering below her breast

“We need to talk,” Sadie managed to say as she turned to face him. “I won’t…”

“Shh.” Jake pressed his mouth to hers. “We’ll talk in the morning, OK?” His hand moved up to cup her breast, fingertips teasing her nipple. “Surely it can wait a couple of hours… can’t it?”

“No…” Sadie squirmed away from his touch. “This is important, Jake.”

“Really?” He hovered over her, and she could hear the smile in his voice as he asked, “How important?”

She frowned. “Very important.”

“As in more-important-than-sex important?” He whispered in mock-incredulity.

“Stop laughing at me.”

“I’m not. I’m seducing you.”

Sadie rolled her eyes. “Oh, is that so?”

“Indeed it is.” Jake moved to sit astride her, knees either side of her waist. “That is, unless you have any objections.” He leaned forward to flick on the bedside lamp, making both of them blink at the sudden flood of light.

“Oh, I have plenty of objections,” Sadie said as forcibly as she could, struggling to prop herself up on her elbows as she tried not to think of how good he looked. “The first one being; what the hell took you so long?”

“Ah, just lost track of time I guess.”

“Jake, it’s two in the morning for god’s sake!”

He sighed and shrugged, purposefully ignoring her annoyed tone. “We had to go out to dinner with the client and I missed the last train. I wouldn’t have gone, only we get our bonuses next Friday and...” He hesitated as if wondering whether to say something further but shook his head.

“What is it?” Sadie frowned.

Jake shook his head again. “Nothing.”

“No, tell me!”

“Fine.” Jake sighed. “I was going to say we could use the money to… maybe get a week away.”

“A week away… where?” Sadie frowned.

“Wherever you want.” Jake leaned down and planted a kiss on her mouth. “We need to get away. Just the two of us. Somewhere hot and sunny with ice cold beers and a hundred bars.” He sighed. “I’m tired of this same old routine, and I know it eats away at you too. We need to do something exciting.”

“Hmm. That sounds nice,” Sadie conceded. “A romantic break.”

“Right!” Jake grinned. “Palm trees and local restaurants and foreign clubs… I was thinking Gibraltar.”

“That sounds like a prison.” Sadie giggled.

“Oh it does, does it?” Jake smirked playfully, his hands moving to tickle below her ribs, making her squeal and struggle beneath him.

“Get off!” Sadie gasped breathlessly, trying to push his hands away but failing miserably. “I’m going to be sick!”

Jake stopped immediately, his hands closing around her wrists. “Now that,” he said with a straight face, “Would not be sexy in the slightest.”

He pinned her hands either side of her head on the pillow, and grinned down at her. “This is my favourite way of seeing you.”

“What, held down by a merciless monster?” Sadie giggled sarcastically, still faintly light-headed.

“No,” Jake said. “Happy and smiling and,” His gaze darkened slightly. “All mine.” His mouth came down suddenly, with surprising force, lips claiming hers as his tongue darted into her mouth.

The length of his body pushed down on her and Sadie could feel his erection pressing urgently against the flat of her stomach. Her hips tilted up automatically to press against his, and she heard him groan deep in his throat, momentarily releasing one of her hands, before the other held both her wrists tightly above her head. His free hand moved down her body to pull at her underwear, fingers slipping beneath the waistband. Sadie moaned softly, and Jake’s head lifted so he could look down at her, his eyes holding hers as his finger rotated steadily on her clitoris.

“You’re so wet,” he whispered hoarsely, and his finger slid up inside her, circling slowly as he watched her squirm beneath him. His thumb rested on her clitoris and he moved it in circular motions, massaging her wet warmth until he heard her catch her breath in anticipation, her legs stiffening beneath his. Then he pulled his hand away, stopping just short of her orgasm.

Sadie scowled with frustration and pulled a face at him.

Jake laughed. “Aw… did somebody want to come?” He stuck his tongue out at her.

She scowled again, hardly believing his nerve. “Very mature.”

Jake grinned broadly and made to push her underwear down, until she took over and kicked it off from around her ankles. Reaching down, he took a hold of his erection, lining it up against her wet pussy. He paused. Sadie held her breath expectantly but he didn’t move. She opened her eyes to see him looking down at her, a sexy grin plastered all over his face. She didn’t know how he could wait this long. Lifting her hips up, she pushed at him, her breasts pressing against his chest.

Jake’s eyes darkened and his smile disappeared. He slammed into her hard. Finally. Sadie let out a groan of relief at the feeling of fullness, holding him there for just one delicious moment until he pulled back. His hand came up to caress her cheek, fingers trailing across her throat as he plunged again, bottoming out inside her, his breath coming out between clenched teeth.

He smiled a half-smile. “That feels fucking good.”

Releasing her hands, he retracted again, pulling almost all the way out before sinking slowly in again. Pulling up onto his knees, he grasped her hips, lifting them up to meet his thrusts as he began to move faster, one hand moving upwards to caress her t-shirt covered breast, fondling and squeezing. He pushed her hair off her face so he could watch her in the glow of the fluorescent lamp as he altered the angle of his thrusts, pushing in deeper and harder, making her moan out loud.

And then his damp hands were clawing at her waist, pulling her around to move on top of him, his cock buried deep inside her all the while. He sank back against the pillows, pulling her face down to his so he could kiss her hard, his hands fisting in her long hair. “Fuck me,” he whispered hoarsely, his chest rising and falling beneath hers. Sadie pressed her palms against his torso, pulling herself up into a sitting position as she slowly lifted off him before moving back down. Jake’s eyes closed momentarily, his jaw clenched as he let out a groan of ecstasy.

“More,” he whispered and he held out his hands for her to hold onto as she moved up and down, up and down, her hair tickling his chest as she moved faster, her fingers digging into his. Her body pushed down onto him again and again, loving the way his eyes darkened as they roved over her slender form. She could hear his breathing become uneven as he lifted his hips to push her back up on every thrust, his green eyes locked to hers. His lips were parted, as he forced her to increase the tempo, somehow still in control though she was the one on top. She gripped his hands tightly, unable to draw her eyes away from his as she fought to keep up with his relentless pace, her body prickling with sweat. They were both gasping for air now and she could feel herself tensing as they moved faster and faster, the slick slide of his hard cock giving her the sweetest, most agonisingly sublime feeling in the entire world.

“Oh god Jake…” She gasped out the words, feeling her body clench as she climaxed around him, her cheeks flushing as she shook, the waves of pleasure radiating through her body. Her eyes closed, relishing the satisfaction, vaguely aware that Jake was still buried deep inside her. She felt him move again, his hands holding hers tight as he thrust upwards a couple more times, muttering expletives under his breath. Sadie opened her eyes to watch him as he let go of her hands to grip tight to her hips, his fingers digging into her as he moved almost violently to slam deep inside her again and again as his body stiffened. She felt him shudder as he reached his peak, his eyes closing as he came deep inside her, his hands pulling her down to lie on top of him.

Sadie could feel his heat thumping beneath her and she pressed a kiss to his chest, tasting the salty sweat as she gently moved to lie beside him. She lay there and took a moment to gaze at him as she tried to slow her breathing, loving the way he looked, all messy-haired and tired. Her fingers came out and ran through his soft dark hair, pushing it away from his face.

He opened his eyes and smiled at her lazily. “That was fucking brilliant.” Shifting slightly, he stretched and turn to smile at her. “So, where do you wanna go?”

“Go?” Sadie frowned at him, confused.

“Yeah.” Jake laughed at her bewilderment. “What I was saying earlier? The week off? Where do you want it to be? Paris, Venice, St Petersburg…?” He propped himself up on an elbow to look down at her with a heart melting grin.

Sadie hesitated, gazing up into his clear green eyes, wondering how she’d let things turn around so quickly. She could still put a stop to it; throw out some accusations, recite all his lies back to him. But she didn’t want to. Not when he was lying right next to her, so warm and loving. Maybe she was just being insecure; after all, it wasn’t as if she had any proof that he’d been up to anything untoward. Perhaps she should give him the benefit of the doubt.

Jake raised an eyebrow, still waiting for a response. “If you can’t decide, maybe it should be Gibraltar… I’m just sayin’…”

“We are not going to Gibraltar.” Sadie laughed. “I think Paris would be good…?” She hesitated. “If that’s not too boring or… ”

“Paris it is then!” Jake interrupted, putting his finger to her mouth. “If that’s where you want to go, that’s where I’m taking you.” He replaced his finger with his lips giving her one final kiss before lying back down beside her, satiated.

“I love you, Sadie Dayton.”

Sadie rolled onto her side to look at him, her heart full of unspoken doubts. “Do you?”

Jake smiled at her adoringly. “You know I do.”
