Kind of with you on the words part, arguably better and safer, but in my (limited) cam site experience, lots of people do it without showing their face! Image quality is generally pretty good and quite nice for those with voyeur or exhibitionst streaks. Never done it with a RL partner on screen, though have in person...

I can imagine it would be a fantastic tool for spouse or SO separated by great distance, in a deployed or frequent business travel situation or such. That's about how much I'd have to trust someone to go with the idea.

Skype sexed once, using my phone, technology really was a bit in the way of biology.
