I'm really hoping Holland doesn't implode in the knockstage this time... And Mexico reaching the semis might be a little hopeful but they did win the under 17 worldcup and some of those players will be in the squad in south Africa.

Mexico vs. Gambia is starting in 45 min. Hoping they crush them and no one gets injured especially Giovanni dos Santos or Carlos Vela.

Maybe this thread could be turned into a Sticky for the World Cup?

Tonight the Dutch will take on Ghana. In contrast to the previous friendly against Mexico, we'll most likely start with our 11 best players. Curious to see how they'll play as a team!

Well, I am not 100 per cent sure about Spain. I think it could be Argentine's Cup, with Maradona as coach and Messi on the field. But as they say over and over, "anything can happen in 90 minutes".

Well, Argentina didn't do well in the qualifications round but then again, there are no guarantees obviously. Messi is definitely a force to be reckoned with although Inter Milan effectively shut him out of the 2 games.
Gary Lineker once said the game lasts 90 minutes and at the end the Germans win haha. Curious to see how well the Germans do without Ballack though. If they can rally up and close their ranks they might fight their way into yet another semi-final or finals game.

The World Cup runs from June 11 - July 11, but WC fever will last a few months after it ends.

And not all men are caught up in WC fever. I know I'm not. I mean, I'll watch some of the games, but won't get overly excited.

I dont know who will win, but I'll be glued in front of TV, I just love world cups, the supporters, the craziness, the surprises, etc. This one has an added value: it's in South Africa, so anything can happen.

Definitely excited indeed! And I know plenty women who LOATHE soccer hahaha.
Guess you just have to refrain from clicking on this topic the next several weeks HoneyBee000.

I'm really looking forward to seeing how fans will dress up to cheer on their team. Always fun to check out the crowd when the camera pans over women who take the opportunity to cheer for their country and use their curves to convince others haha.

It definitely is a fever because I got caught up in it before, when I wasn't even a soccer fan.

The countdown clock is ticking and it's exciting.

Well well, interesting game. We trashed Ghana with 4-1. Their goal was a retarded mistake by two of our defensive players though. Let's hope they won't repeat that at the World Cup.
Also saw a summary of Portugal vs. Cameroon. Portugal looked like their usual attractive offensive football playing style and won 3-1. Apparently they had problems in the qualifications round but I'm sure they'll do some proper damage at the World Cup.

Only 9 days to go for the kick off wohoo!!

Only 8 days 23 hours left until World Cup time!

Four goals on Ghana is no easy feat. Holland is looking strong.

Mexico v Italy tomorrow. I'm curious to see how Italy's old guys will do against Mexico's speedy offense. I hope Italy doesn't score early because it might turn into a really boring game.

Hey guys, what's a good team to root for in the World Cup? I never really watched soccer, but with the hot-ass guys and as big a deal as it is, it might be fun to try and follow.

You might say, you're American, follow the US, but that's not enough for me- just because the guys are from the same country as me doesn't mean I owe them a damn thing. I want to be entertained. Since soccer already just seems like a bunch of dudes just running back and forth, what team is exciting to watch, that will give me a real shot at staying interested?

What team has the best uniforms? The best fans?

I want to pick a team, so convince me.2NIbYvrt2GOUtffo

I'd say if you've never really watched soccer before then go watch the teams with the most offensive playing style: Spain, Brazil, Portugal, the Netherlands.
In addition to those countries any match with some of the countries with the longest tradition playing soccer is recommended: Germany, England, Argentina, Italy.

In terms of a specific game to watch I'd say the USA's first game which is against England. On June 12, 20:30 CET time. Which is like 7-8 hours ahead of mid-US time I think.
I'm sure your ESPN network will broadcast the USA games and hopefully also a good amount of other games.

If anyone needs help catching a specific game then send me a pm. There are many ways that lead to Rome!
The only reason I'm not posting them in this topic is that rocco/nicola might not be too happy having not so legal ways to watch important soccer matches posted here.

It's nice talking to myself.

Watched Brazil vs. Zimbabwe this afternoon. Zimbabwe put on some good resistance and should've scored at least once. But Brazil knew they would get their chances if they would be patient. The 3-1 outcome shows how effective a good soccer team can be.

Look at the soccer ball they'll be using in the Cup.

Controversial World Cup ball defended by developer

Jun 2 08:07 AM US/Eastern
Stars from England, Brazil and Italy have joined forces to criticise the controversial new ball to be used in the World Cup, but the developer insists there will be no cause for concern once the tournament gets underway in South Africa.

The Adidas 'Jabulani' ball has caused concern at training camps across the globe as the world's best players try it out ahead of the start of the World Cup on June 11.

It is believed to have an unpredictable swerving movement which makes its hard for goalkeepers and strikers to anticipate its direction in flight.

England goalkeeper David James says the ball is "horrible", Brazil forward Luis Fabiano calls it "weird" and Italy goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon fears its "unpredictability" could ruin the World Cup.

However, Dr Andy Harland, who developed the ball at Loughborough University's Sports Technology Institute in England, said much of the criticism was due to the unfamiliar effects arising from teams playing at altitude as part of their pre-World Cup training.

"I've seen nothing that's concerned me," he told Sky Sports News. "This ball has been around since December and been used since then around the world with very few comments.

"Teams have gone to altitude and you've seen comments come out in those circumstances.

"We've said all along it would affect the ball, but it should be said whichever ball you play with at altitude is going to be affected."

The ball is billed as the roundest ever made, a quality which would make it less stable in the air if not for a series of grooves on the surface designed to reduce aerodynamic problems.

Harland said not one team had contacted him to discuss the ball and added he was not surprised by the criticism.

"It's not entirely unexpected," he said. "Before every tournament players come out and voice their opinions.

"There are no secrets about this ball. The ball is designed to allow the very best players in the world to exhibit their skills."

I saw reports of this today too Rocco.

Every world cup the players belly ache about the ball. I remember four years ago they complained that it "knuckled" in the air and made it too hard to defend against long shots. This new ball is light and unpredictable as well, I like this because it should reward aggressive offensive play. I hate watching two teams bunker for 90 min to squeeze out a draw. Also the ball has been used in matches for several months now and no one has complained until now. Sounds like some teams are setting up excuses in case they don't perform well.

This is a really great soccer commercial from nike. Great cameos from Roger Federer, Gael Garcia Bernal and Homer Simpson. Also has some great shots of some of the best players around.

They always complain about every new WC ball. Usually it's the goalies that complain since out of all players they have to re-adjust the most.
Either way, the WC will be played with this ball so whoever complains should reconsider and get back to what they're supposed to do. Train like hell and perform like the best on the highest attainable level of soccer.

RE: the commercial, it's directed by Alejandro González Iñárritu (Babel, 21 Grams, Amores perros).
Interestingly Ronaldinho is in the commercial but he wasn't selected for the Brazil national team this WC.

Here's one of the most spectacular/brilliant goals in the history of the World Cup.
That impeccable pass by Frank de Boer, that superb first controlling touch and magnificent finish by Dennis Bergkamp still gives me goosebumps every time I watch it.
How close we got to winning that World Cup in 1998...

Mexico beats the defending champs Italy 2-1 today.

Mexico played like beasts while Italy looked pretty rusty. It's Italy's first friendly though but I would still be concerned if I were Italian.

The way Bergkamp controlled that ball and shook the defender was masterful. That finish was also so calm. Great great player that Arsenal still hasn't found a replacement for.

I saw the match, too, and agree. It's not going to be their year this time. It reminded me of Juventus (who added a lot of the team players).

Who do you like on Friday, the 11th?

South Africa vs. Mexico

Uruguay vs. France

It's nerve racking to be the first game of the world cup but I think Mexico will win. I'm thinking 3-0. South Africa just isn't up to the level of the rest of the teams. Maybe one of the worst if not the worst host nation teams in a while.

Uraguay v France is a little more balanced but I think France will handle Uraguay. 2-0 France. France sometimes has trouble playing as a team well. They're individual skill is better than they're team skill but they can beat any team on any given day.

Your girlfriend has good taste- good god damn those guys are hot! lol.

Okay did my research, and picked my team. Paintman says to pick an offensive team, and the uniforms have to be colorful, and the guys have to be hot.

I choose Portugal, baby! Go Portugal! Little country, hot players.SzwuJPKLdur4Xir5
