Here is the table at press time, for the Premier League. This is just one league, so add your own interest in your team/league, too. I'm interested in learning really good teams.

1. Chelsea 77 points
2. Man Utd 73
3. Arsenal 71
4. Man City 69

and hooligans in the crowd dampen the fun of that experience as well.
Unfortunately, members of the crowd are a problem in any sport. It doesn't take many bad fans to ruin the experience. I've had more problems at Canadian Football games than soccer though.

My favourite soccer game was Canada hosting Jamaica for the world cup qualifiers. Game was pretty good, and there was a friendly rivalry in my section between the Jamaican and Canadian supporters. What I loved about the game though, was the very stereotypical, sweet scent of marijuana smoke wafting over the stadium. What else would you expect when Canada and Jamaica get together?

EPL: Chelsea is on top? Damn I missed a lot! I haven't been paying much attention to EPL, but they did steal a lot of my favorite german players. I think it's Chelsea to the end. They've been virtually unstoppable with their lineup ever since Man U lost Ronaldo to RM.

La Liga
Barcelona 83
Real Madrid 77
Valencia 56
Mallorca 52

I just don't wanna see Barcelona win again. Granite, they have the hottest goal keeper on the planet, but I wanna see someone else win at some point. I hate Ronaldo, but I want RM to win. They've signed a lot of good players this year. Injury is always a problem on this team though..........AND they have the 2nd hottest goalie.....

Hubby and I got interested in it with the arrival of the Seattle Sounders of MLS. It's a lot of fun, but there's some really stupid idiots who feel they HAVE to be thugs about it and have attacked fans of other teams. Not cool, we wouldn't dream of attacking, say, a Texas Rangers fan at a Mariner's game, or a 49'ers fan at a Seahawks game, but all of a sudden it's "cool" to beat up someone cheering against the team we've only had for two seasons?

That's just wrong, to beat someone up over darn sports. What do you think of the USA's chances in the World Cup, CQ?

It's the last weekend of regular season for the Premier League, Bundesliga, and others. It all comes down to this now.

I've been a ManU fan since I got into international soccer right before World Cup 1994. I've been following MLS since it launched in 1996, and root for my home area team, the New England Revolution.

Yet, to be honest, I really only get excited about soccer when it's time for the World Cup......or when ManU and Chelsea play each other.

I don't know enough about it, but I'm surprised that the USA has never even made it to the finals? C'mon USA, you can do better than that!!! I do remember seeing Brazil play in the Word Cup in the USA back in 94 in person and my girlfriend and I marveling that soccer players were in as good of shape as any other athletes and they looked...sexier for the most part, being sleeker and less muscled and more toned. Not that any athlete ever had a chance with me other than Ray Bourque...

Didn't the USA make it to the finals one year? I remember watching them, and they were beating the odds. Maybe it was during semifinals, etc.

Let's hear some more about World Cup and other soccer teams. I have a lot to learn.

The USA definitely didn't make it to the World Cup finals. I think they once reached the quarter finals but were eliminated.
The finals you might be thinking about was a Confederations Cup where the USA played horrible Italian defensive soccer. They got to the finals against Brazil and took a lead. But fortunately Brazil kept playing real soccer and turn the game around in the final half hour or so.

EDIT: here's a link of that USA vs Brazil game: http://soccernet.espn.go.com/report?id=266850&cc=5739

Thanks for that link, Painter. I appreciate that.

I think I saw the quarter finals of the World Cup, because it was one of the few times soccer was televised here on a Big 3 network.

There I was, watching Universidad de Chile vs Alianza Lima, and the action was pretty good. I noticed the pitch was rather rough, and there was chain-link fence at the end of the zones. These teams really know how to play.

Near the end of the game, a beautiful goal was made and was contested. Chaos ensued. It was incredible. Riley saw it, too.

I love Dutch soccer. Besides Mexico, they are my favorite team to watch. They just beat Mexico 2-1 a few days ago. It was a great game with great atmosphere. Van Persie terrorized the Mexican defense. Hopefully both teams make a deep run at the world cup this time. I hoping semi-finals for both.

I didn't know Van Persie was in Netherlands. I wish I could've seen that game.

Mexico is a good team. I'll start watching Netherlands now.

Who are your favorites in the first round?

Ok, let's educate rocco on the Dutch national team.

Goalies: Maarten Stekelenburg, Michel Vorm, Sander Boschker

Defense: Khalid Boulahrouz, André Ooijer, Gregory van der Wiel, John Heitinga, Joris Mathijsen, Giovanni van Bronckhorst, Edson Braafheid

Midfield: Nigel de Jong, Mark van Bommel, Rafael van der Vaart, Stijn Schaars, Ibrahim Afellay, Wesley Sneijder, Demy de Zeeuw

Offense: Dirk Kuijt, Arjen Robben, Ryan Babel, Eljero Elia, Robin van Persie, Klaas-Jan Huntelaar

We're in group E with Denmark, Japan and Cameroon.
I definitely recommend the FIFA website which always does a nice job of giving timely updates and info about teams and matches is easily found.
For instance, the overview of all matches: http://www.fifa.com/worldcup/matches/index.html

Now, I see Felix hopes us to reach the semi-finals but I'm more sceptical. Let's see if they can survive this first group round. And if they indeed advance to the knock-out phase the first knock-out game will be an important indicator of how far we might make it.
Two years ago we dominated the group phase beating Italy (3-0), France (4-1) and Romania (2-0). Only to be eliminated against Russia in the first knock-out game. Big ouch.
And don't even get me started on that "game" against Portugal in 2006. Just typing this still hurts too much.

Anyway. Gonna watch the Germany vs. Hungary friendly now.

Yeah there are many websites which let you set up groups which friends can join. Everyone in the group fills in the expected outcomes for each match and points are being given based on how close your predictions are. Great fun to beat your friends on one day.... until they beat you the next one and retaliate in making fun of you haha.
I'm not well acquainted with most teams so my predictions would be shite. Usually it's the well-known soccer nations plus 1 surprise country who advance to the semi-finals.

And the Germany-Hungary match was terrible haha. I'm half Hungarian so it's with some sense of sadness that I have to say they looked like a bunch of amateurs. Hideous, the lot of them.
Germany tried out a lot of new players to determine which ones will be cut and which 23 lucky Germans will be given tickets to participate in the World Cup. So kinda hard to say much about their performance. People say them missing Ballack will cost them dearly but Germany is a terrific tournament team. Meaning that they usually grow a lot in a tournament, become an even tighter team and often play for result.
They don't have the talent that we the Dutch have but look at where Germany stranded at the last few European Cups and World Cups, and compare that to where the Dutch stranded. For instance, in 2002 we didn't even qualify for the World Cup after making it to semi-finals in 1998. In contrast, Germany made it to the finals game against Brazil in 2002.
Nuff said.
