Prologue

Shagufta groaned as she sat up in bed, her body aching from the lack of sleep. It had been another long night of taking care of her three children, all under the age of eight. She had been married for ten years now, and life seemed to have taken a toll on her. Once a young and vibrant girl, Shagufta was now a tired and worn-out housewife.

She glanced at her reflection in the mirror, taking in her disheveled appearance. Her long black hair was tied up in a messy bun; her face was pale, and there were dark circles under her tired eyes. After giving birth multiple times and having food cravings to relieve stress, she had gained a lot of weight. It reminded her of her baby bumps when she used to be pregnant; however, now it was just a soft layer of fat popping out of her belly, making her feel unfit.

She shook her head, wondering where the years had gone and how she had ended up like this.

As she went through her morning routine, Shagufta couldn't help but think about how her life had changed after marriage. She had been a beautiful bride, adorned in traditional red and gold, with her face covered by a sheer veil. Her husband had been a handsome man, a successful businessman who had swept her off her feet with his charm and wealth.

But as the years went by, Shagufta slowly started to lose her confidence and sense of self. After giving birth thrice, her body had changed, and she no longer felt attractive. She had let herself go, focusing all her attention on her children and her husband's needs.

It had been months since she had shaved her legs or done any sort of self-grooming. Most of her days were spent looking after the children, cooking, and cleaning, and she had little time for herself.

She was a modest Muslim woman, following the teachings of her religion, and she always wore a burqa when stepping out of the house. Wearing a burqa, she felt somewhat better since all her imperfections were concealed behind a layer of draping fabric; however, in recent times, her body had changed so much that even the loose fabric of the burqa couldn't do much in the way of concealing the body underneath.

Shagufta had garnered quite a reputation in the neighborhood, unknown to her. While she hated how her body had gotten now, many men admired her body, particularly enjoying how her hips moved left and right as she walked. Of course, Shagufta had no idea about this fact and just assumed everyone was nice to her in general.

On this particular morning, as per her routine, Shagufta got out of bed and made her way to the bathroom. She locked the door and sat on the toilet, just as she does every morning.

Then she suddenly heard a loud knock on the door. Startled, she quickly covered herself with a nearby towel, hiding her thighs and exposed areas as she sat on the toilet. She called out, "Who is it?"

"I'm sorry, it was me," came the voice of her husband, Fahad.

Shagufta let out a sigh of relief, knowing it was her husband. She had a mini heart attack thinking one of her kids was trying to get in. Because if they did, Shagufta wouldn't have been able to do anything since she was in the middle of using the toilet, and her husband would have had to intervene, creating a very embarrassing situation.

After she was done, she flushed the toilet, pulled up her underwear and shalwar, and washed her hands.

As she got up to open the door, Fahad pushed it open and walked in.

"Can't you at least lock the door?" he scolded her.

"The lock is broken," Shagufta replied meekly, avoiding his gaze.

Fahad rolled his eyes. "Call the carpenter today and get it fixed." As Shagufta stepped out of the bathroom, "Hurry up, I need to shave," he said before closing the door behind him.

Shagufta shook her head, wondering when was the last time she had taken a long, relaxing shower without any interruptions. She couldn't even take ten minutes to use the toilet in peace without something coming up.

She quickly finished her morning routine and went to the kitchen to prepare breakfast for her family.

As she was making tea, Fahad came into the kitchen, dressed in his business suit and carrying his briefcase. "I have to leave for a business trip today; make sure the kids are ready to leave for their grandparents' house," he said, sipping on his tea.

Shagufta nodded, feeling a sense of relief. Her in-laws had invited the children over for the weekend, and she was looking forward to having some time to herself.

She would be able to clean the house without any interruptions and maybe even take a long bath.

After Fahad left, Shagufta got the kids ready and sent them off to their grandparents' house.

She then went about her day, cleaning the house and preparing lunch. As she sat down to have her meal, she couldn't help but feel a sense of loneliness. Her husband was away, her children were gone, and she had no one to talk to.

But she shrugged off the feeling and continued with her day. She had gotten used to this routine, and she knew she had to be content with it.

The first task on her agenda was to get the bathroom lock fixed, so she called the carpenter.

After making the call, she made her way to the room and started putting on her burqa. Since this strange outsider man was coming into her house, she had to cover herself just as she does when she leaves the house.

"Ding Dong." She heard the bell as she put on her face veil.
