The best guitarist I ever heard was Ywngie J Malmsteen, not a massive fan of his music, but boy could he play !!
Eric Clapton I guess. If you ask me tomorrrow I might say B.B. King or Carlos Santana. It just depends on my mood.
Carlos Santana
Stevie Ray Vaughn.
Jimmy Page and Ritchie Blackmore.

Always overlooked because he was everywhere. I guess you can't quantify what you can't catch.
Jimi
Writing quality explicit material for over eight one-hundredths of a century.

"If, after hearing my songs, just one human being is inspired to say something nasty to a friend, or perhaps to strike a loved one, it will all have been worth the while." - Tom Lehrer

"There is no such thing as good luck or bad luck; only adequate or inadequate preparation for a statistical universe." - Robert Heinlein
Carlos Santana for the purity tone of his guitar...

Peter Steele - RIP
Old "Slowhand". Not really into the hard/loud stuff.

I do not know if you all have heard about this Russian guy now living in Germany I think, but Igor Presnyakov is the GOD of Guitarist.. Check out his playing as Iggy Pres on youtube! Awesome!!
Couple been missed:
John Williams
Jose Feliciano

And dittos for
Eric Clapton
Muddy waters
John Lee Hooker
Keith Richards
Carlos Santana
Hendrix

Anyone rate Brian May of Queen?
Richard Z. Kruspe. Best known for his lead guitar in Rammstein and to a lesser extent his front role in the band Emigrate.

His voice melts me every time I hear him sing, but his guitar skills are also amazing!

For technical ability, I don't think anyone can beat Alvin Lee -- even Jimi Hendrix, who was more of an interesting improviser or many of the other genii mentioned in this thread. It wasn't just that he could play fast, what he played was amazing.

I'd compare him to Paganini - being a virtuoso is wonderful and important, but it's not the only quality that makes a musician; it's like mathematics: the fastest and brightest mathematicians have not contributed the most to math. Some of the greatest have been positively slow in their thinking (Norbert Weiner comes to mind)

The Wood Chopper's Ball shows off the talent I'm describing much better than his famous I'm Going Home.

This version is one of my favorites (apologies for the really poor quality on YouTube) -- and the interplay with Leo Lyons (bass) at the end is something to experience.

Thanks for considering. I'm interested in others' ideas: I'm pretty confident Alvin Lee is a great technical player; my thought is that others are less moved by this aspect of musicianship for whatever reason.

In the spirit of our website--I think it's about what really turns you on, which we all know is highly variable!!
J.J. Cale, Richie Havens a close second.
Even Clapton called Cale a guitar God.
Have a listen to R.H's 'Here Comes The Sun'. Better even than The Beatles original, in my humble opinion.
Just read some other posts. Mine were instinctive. Some of the guitarists mentioned I have never heard of. I'll make a note and have a listen.
2 that are more than worthy, Stevie Ray Vaughan. Clapton has a lot to thank him for, changing helicopters.
Rory Gallagher. Saw him at the Town & Country Club in London (turned into The Forum I think, may be gone now). Couple of years before he died. Most definitely still had it. The place was buzzing.
Mark Knopfler (from Dire Straits)
According to styles but for starters Chet Atkins must be up there, Hank Marvin Julian Bream all so different and great. Bit like comparing Icecream or Custard all have there place.
Man what a great bunch of guitarists, two I haven't seen mentioned, Brad Paisley, Doyle Dykes. Kudos to Lady Ann Vince Gill is very under rated.
Just so many to choose from at the moment I think Joe Bonamassa is right up there, of the past Alvin Lee of Ten Years After and Hendrix both of whom I saw live at the Isle of Wight in 1970.
How about Tommy Emmanuel? He has played with all the greats that have been alive while he has and is considered the worlds best guitarist of today. One more person who everyone tries to copy is Brent Mason. There aren't too many recording artists he hasn't been a session musician for.
for me its between James Hetfield, Dave Mustaine and Marty Friedman, the first two are incredible rythym players while marty's solo work is brilliant
Dimebag Darrell Abbott
I enjoy John Lennon
