Les Miserables

Art can never exist without naked beauty displayed.
Jesus Christ Superstar
Rent
The Wiz
The Lion King on Broadway
Dreamgirls
1) Les Miserable
2) Moulin Rouge
3) Hairspray (saw that movie 2 times, one after the other, love that movie especially Zac Efron)
4) Jesus Christ Superstar (though the damn bloody musical movie always makes me cry when i do watch it)
5) Chicago
6) West Side Story
7) Mamma Mia
8) Phantom Of The Opera
9) Rock Of Ages
Mamma Mia and Grease are my favorites
Into The Woods
Sunday In The Park With George
Rent (also La Boheme, but that's the opera that it's based on, not a musical)
Gypsy

My favourite is Miss Saigon, a modernized version of Madame Butterfly. However they are really both operas as there are no spoken parts.
A few of the "musicals" named by others are also operas.
'Seven Brides For Seven Brothers"

Does The Blues Brothers count? I love that movie...

Me Too Mazza, and Rocky Horror
"Hair". I saw it performed in Chicago in the early seventies and had a wonderful night that included a hand job after.....
“It's nice sometimes to open up the heart a little and let some hurt come in. It proves you're still alive.”
Toss up Between Les Miserable and Jesus Christ Superstar
Phantom of the Opera or My Fair Lady - both tied for 1st place
Les Miserables. There are so many to choose from!
Sweeney Todd! And Guest (clever name) is right, the Len Cariou/Angela Landsbury one, not the Johhny Depp one (they cut the best song in the whole show!). I saw the original on Broadway, though not with the original cast. Stunning.

Also, this sounds dumb, but trust me, there is a great musical called Urinetown (giant mega-corporations charge people for the right to pee). Smart, subversive, very funny but with some serious ideas bouncing around in there.

Hedwig and the Angry Inch.

And Frozen does count! I LOVE that movie. I still get choked up. The line "the cold never bothered me anyway" in Let It Go is genius.
.
Wicked!

My son and I are going to see it for our 3rd time in October in Las Vegas. I have the soundtrack and I love this show. If they ever make it a movie... I'm so there!!!
Desert Song. The music is in my opinion the best of all, followed by Phantom of the Opera.
ive only ever seen one live, so gonna have to with it...it was great none the less, Grease was absolutely amazing!!!
Paint Your Wagon.

"Unnnn-mount!"
I have been performing in musicals since I was five, so I definitely have an opinion on the matter!

Operetta: Sweeney Todd or Phantom of the Opera
Classic Movie Musical: My Fair Lady
Golden Era of Musicals: South Pacific
Modern Americal Musical: Chess
Contemporary Musical: Avenue Q
Cult Musical: Rocky Horror Picture Show
Modern Movie Musical: Pitch Perfect
Live RAH Musical: Chess (Josh Groban, Idina Menzel, Kerry Ellis, Adam Pascal)
West End: Billy Elliot
All Time Favorite: Company (Raul Esparza)

Like Isaid, I have an opinion!!!

I totall agree with the Urinetown add! Great Musical. The writers did a very good job with the subject matter, being that is was a social commentary. I played Penelope Pennywise and cannot express how much fun singing "It's a Privilege to Pee" is.
Well Hello Mister Fancypants!
it has to be Chicago... And all that jazz

and Rocky Horror is fantastic fun

Actually, they are considered an operetta. Much of what has been mentioned are. Les Mis, Phantom, Oklahoma, Sweeney Todd, Rent (although Jonathan Larson classified it as a rock opera), Jesus Christ Superstar and a few others. Operetta,or operette, mean little opera. Content are large considerations into the genre.

I think I would love Wicked too, but still haven't seen it sad

An operetta a light or humourous theme. It was simply a way of differentiating between Grand Opera and Light Opera.
I wouldn't class the theme of Les Mis, Miss Saigon or Phantom as light or humourous. They are operas in the true sense of the word.
My all time favorite is Les Miserables. But I have a great love for West Side Story, I played a Jet in a college production. Such fun...if I were more talented, maybe I would have taken theater as a major! smile
