I am a big fan of old movies. I am not sure if there are that many others around here or not. If you are who are some of your favorite actors and actresses from the 1930s.

Here are mine (in no particular order).

1) Fredric March
2) Clark Gable
3) Gary Cooper
4) Spencer Tracy
5) Walter Brennan
6) John Wayne
7) James Cagney
8) Errol Flynn
9) Cary Grant
10) Jimmy Stewart
10) Mickey Rooney
10) Wallace Beery

1) Norma Shearer
2) Marlene Deitrich
3) Katherine Hepburn
4) Bette Davis
5) Claudette Colbert
6) Janet Gaynor
7) Barbara Stanwyck
8) Olivia DeHaviland
9) Vivien Leigh
10) Greta Garbo
10) Jean Harlow
10) Marie Dressler

Sorry I couldn't decide between the 3 at the bottom on each list.
No room for Ingrid Bergman?
I love love love old movies, from the 1930s in particular! I would add Myrna Loy, Irene Dunne, William Powell, Rosalind Russel, Bogart, Laurence Olivier, and Fred & Ginger to those already mentioned. smile
Vivian Leigh....I just admire all her work.
You got it Heather, you can't beat Myrna Loy and William Powell in the Thin Man series of movies. What good taste you have ;)

By the way, most of those actors on your list did their best work in the 1940, not the 1930s. And at the top of my list are Cary Grant, Jimmy Stewart, Humphrey Bogart, Katharine Hepburn, Ingrid Bergman, and Jean Arthur. Of course I have already mentioned that wonderful team, William Powell and Myrna Loy.
And how did I forget Lauren Bacall? The list just keeps growing.

I agree on a few and agree that they had great movies in the 1940s, but some had great work in the 30s as well.

To me each of them had a standout performance or performance that made them great in the 1930's as well:

1) Fredric March (Dr. Jeckyll & Mr. Hyde)
2) Clark Gable (It Happened One Night; Gone With the Wind)
3) Gary Cooper (Mr. Deeds Goes to Town)
4) Spencer Tracy (San Francisco; Libeled Lady)
5) Walter Brennan (Come and Get It; Kentucky)
6) John Wayne (Stagecoach)
7) James Cagney (Angels with Dirty Faces; the Public Enemy)
8) Errol Flynn (The Adventures of Robin Hood)
9) Cary Grant (Holiday; Bringing Up Baby)
10) Jimmy Stewart (Mr. Smith Goes to Washington)
10) Mickey Rooney (the Hardy movies; Boys Town)
10) Wallace Beery (The Big House; Min and Bill)

1) Norma Shearer (The Women; A Free Soul)
2) Marlene Deitrich (Morocco; Shaghai Express)
3) Katherine Hepburn (Little Women; Holiday; Bringing Up Baby; Morning glory)
4) Bette Davis (Of Human Bondage; Jezebel; Dark Victory)
5) Claudette Colbert (It Happened One Night; Imitation of Life; Cleopatra)
6) Janet Gaynor (A Star is Born; State Fair)
7) Barbara Stanwyck (Stella Dallas; Annie Oakley)
8) Olivia DeHaviland (Gone With the Wind; the Adventures of Robin Hood)
9) Vivien Leigh (Gone with the Wind)
10) Greta Garbo (Grand Hotel; Queen Chirstina; Anna Karenina; Ninotchka)
10) Jean Harlow (Libeled Lady; Dinner at Eight; Platinum Blonde)
10) Marie Dressler (Min and Bill; Dinner at Eight; Emma)

Many of these did have bigger success in the 40s and later, but they still made enough impact for me to keep them in my list.

I do agree about William Powell and Myrna Loy. I have so many favorites from that time period. It was hard to narrow down.

There were even ones who weren't stars like Beulah Bondi and Edna May Oliver that I loved as well.
I like a lot of the people already mentioned but without a doubt my favorites of that time were Laurel and Hardy. I know they were not actors in the same sense as maybe a Cary Grant, Jimmy Stewart, etc. but they entertained me and isn't that what it is all about!!
Gene Tierney so hot and sexy!
I guess it's a constant. Comic actors get no respect.

This was a great list and I would only add another 20-30 movies to it! But this list is really well thought out.
