Spoiler Alert: If you don't know Derek is dead, well, you do now.

Welcome, Grey's Anatomy fans!

This is a place to gather, grieve, and rant over the writing of master manipulator, Shonda Rhimes!

Have fun!

EDIT: Words from Dr. Shepherd (Patrick Dempsey):Patrick's Exit Interview
Why?

Whyyyyy?

WHYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY?

Why do something like this to us? No fair.
Insert something witty here.
It's just NOT fair that Derek had to die when they told us that he was there to stay
sniff sniff Darn you Shonda!
I was so pissed! I nearly threw my TV off my balcony. I haven't been this upset since Lexi and Mark died. I mean... come on... first Denny, then George... Lexi and Mark... April's baby... and now this! UGH! At least they didn't kill off Christina.

RIP McDreamy

Shonda, how about an affair? How about repeating the beginning of the Mer/Der saga with another intern in D.C.?

YOU DIDN'T HAVE TO KILL HIM!

McSteamy...

The slaying of eye-candy - so unnecessary!

This. Also. Calzona need to get back together. I miss Calzona.
And had a minor crush on Lexi

This is not really my area of expertise, but it seems that killing people off is such a novice writer's device. Really. Read the initial stories from young people and it seems someone is always dying.

Calzona do need to get back together. And Alex needs to freaking marry Jo and get his happily after. they ruined too much of his relationships...
I just hope everyone gets a happily ever after, if they plan to end the show

Ah Larry, you bring up a good point. For the avid watcher of Grey’s Anatomy, this character killing resembled the vice of a freshman enrolled in ‘Creative Writing 101’. The careless way in which the creator, Shonda Rhimes, and her writing team handle(d) some individuals desiring to leave the show is ridiculous.

This is why Twitter went ablaze during the airing of the episode and remained on fire for hours after.

Time devoted is a major factor. Most watchers have invested more than 240 hours over the past 10 plus years growing with the players created by Shonda Rhimes. Specifically, Derek Shepherd was a major player from the series pilot until his death.

We have a problem with the kill, but more so, we have a problem with the writing and execution of his removal.

The writing team could have done a better job eliminating his character. Here are a few reasons. Patrick Dempsey (Derek Shepherd) had (has) an additional year on his contract with the show. Why not give the viewer a glimmer of hope, a final chat with the protagonist (his wife) and his colleagues. Why kill him at all; why not move him to another state? It’s been done before with other characters: Izzy, Christina, Preston. This brings me to my next point. Why rush the kill?

The kill was quick, unexpected, and unbelievable. The quick kill showed an accident and a death all in one episode. The viewers had no time to process what was happening. Here’s an example of one of Shonda’s slower kills. The writing team took more time getting rid of a secondary character, Mark Sloan or McSteamy; the viewers had several episodes to process his inevitable demise.

Reducing Derek to roadkill left the viewers wondering if Shonda was mad at Patrick for wanting to leave the show; as mentioned, he has one year left on his contract. Even now, as I’m writing this, I’m hoping the writers will circle back around, and give further explanation before the series – oops (sorta) I mean season finale.
