I've heard the song for decades, but I've never been completely able to interpret it.

The lines near the beginning, about "Stroll around the grounds" and "All you see around you are sympathetic eyes" and so forth: is she in or has been in a mental institution (a high-end one for sure)?

"Put it in your pantry with the cupcakes" and "And most of all you you have to hide it from the kids" and all that: I actually considered once that it's about a abortion she once had, but that doesn't seem likely. Is it a reference to the Ben Braddock plot in the movie itself? Or is it about her own attitudes and feelings which she can't reveal?
I love this song, and always thought the same as you: she's at a mental institution, maybe rehab. And they are upper class, and don't want the scandal to tarnish their reputation. I don't think it has that much to do with the movie, although I always figured it's what happens to Mrs. R after Ben runs away with her daughter.

"The Sounds of Silence" is at the very end. Ben and Elaine are sitting in the back of the bus. From their expressions you can tell they're thinking, now what? And, who exactly is this other person?

I wonder what did happen to them next.

It looks as though it wasn't actually originally written for the film.

Its one of my all time favourite songs though ( I reference it in multiple stories )

and this version is good also

Thanks for posting that Lemmonheads vid, Vanessa. I'd forgotten all about that version. A great cover it is too.
I really enjoyed the film The Graduate with Dustin Hoffman in it and liked the soundtrack though i dont know the words Oh yes also with Ann Bancroft as the leading lady

Really interesting article, thanks.

I had never really thought about the lyrics to this song and (don't shoot me) I've never actually seen The Graduate, although I obviously know the general plot. Sounds like drinking/drugs problem, and rehab, as Verbal says.

There's an interview with Dustin Hoffman - it's on YouTube - from, the 1980s maybe? He said the he and Mike Nichols were seriously considering a sequel. Ben and Elaine were married, and had three children, I think. The youngest was a sixteen-year-old son. Ben has an affair with his own son's girlfriend. As Hoffman put it, "In effect, Ben become like Mrs. Robinson."

Well, Mrs. Robinson didn't seduce underage people or the friends of her own children. (Ben found Elaine afterwards, didn't he?) That's a huge difference.

In any case, the film never got made.
