Fantasy author Terry Pratchett has died aged 66 after a long battle with Alzheimer's disease.

"The world has lost one of its brightest, sharpest minds," said Transworld Publishers' Larry Finlay.

Sir Terry, best known for the Discworld series, wrote more than 70 books over his lengthy career.

He was first diagnosed with Alzheimer's in 2007, but continued writing, completing his final book last summer.

The author died at home, surrounded by his family.
*gasp*

Sadness. I do hope he's at peace now. I know he battled his illness bravely.

Rest In Peace, you amazingly talented scribe.

I did not read a lot of Pratchett but loved what I did read (esp. Good Omens, his collaboration with Neil Gaiman). A serious loss to fiction, not just the comic fantasy that was his trademark genre.
A sad loss to the world of Fantasy writing. He fought a brave fight for eight years against a cruel illness, and in his declining years raised awareness of Alzheimer's, as well as raising thousands of pounds for a charity caring for those with the disease.

His lady tweets made me cry...

Thanks for posting his lady's tweets, Mazza.

A huge loss (though I only know him through Neil Gaiman as well). What a cruel fucking disease. RIP, Terry.
Alzheimer's is such a cruel disease. Yet seems to take so many of the best. God bless Terry.
Terrible to hear. I have not read his work but from the statements made it seems he fought the disease to the end. A very brilliant colleague of mine died of that horrible disease. It was so sad to watch him robbed of his superior intellect. However, Terry as an author leaves a bit of him self behind.

66 is pretty young to get it as the average is in the eighties.

You can’t truly call yourself peaceful unless you are capable of violence. If you’re not capable of violence, you’re not peaceful. You’re harmless.
