The late comic book artist Steve Ditko, who passed away at the age of 90 last week, wasn't that well-known outside comic book and nerd culture circles. But just about everyone knows at least some of the characters he created or drew. Most notably, two of his most famous creations (well, co-creations with Stan Lee as writer and Ditko as artist) are Spiderman and Doctor Strange, who are now part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The former is quite likely Marvel's most popular character. He also created or drew The Blue Beetle, The Question, and other characters for Charlton Comics which are now part of the DC comic book universe and, in some cases, animated TV universe due to DC acquiring Charlton.
The sad side of it, as with so many comic book greats, is that Ditko never saw little or none of the sacks of cash his legendary characters earned. These guys worked for hire and didn't own their creations so Ditko saw no royalties from the many Spiderman movies and TV shows or the MCU ever came his way (though Wiki says neighbours say he did get royalty checks from something).
Still, he was an immense creative force in 20th and 21st century culture and keeping that alive may make up for that a little bit. So, if you love the MCU, the various Spiderman movies, or comic book heroes in general, give a moment to remember Steve Ditko who gave so much of his creativity to that world.
