Star Wars Episode 7: December 18, 2015
The date is the date. THey are avoiding the spring/summer tentpole season in 2015 because it's already getting crowded with big names (e.g. Avengers: Age of Ultron). OTOH, that may just support Kathleen Kennedy's push to move it Memorial Day 2016, but it now looks like she lost that battle.
As for the movie itself, I'm taking a wait and see. I love the original trilogy and I'm middling to down on the prequels (some good ideas, execution sucked). With a new team in charge, even if they are working from a basic idea by George Lucas, I'm trying to be cautiously optimistic but we shall see. Bringing in Lawrence Kasdan (who wrote Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi) as a writer on the project at least hints that someone is using their brain. At least we won't get saddled with one of Lucas' half-arsed writing jobs like we did on the prequels. Don't get me wrong; he's a great idea man and knows how to put together the bones of the story but his dialogue is hammy and ham-fisted (even Star Wars : A New Hope, good as it was overall, suffered from this). His weird knack for putting stuff that should be in backstory on screen (e.g. some of the Senate stuff) did not help the prequels, either. Keep the focus on the protagonists, folks.

It really doesn't matter what month it's opened in, no one actually WANTS these movies to be made. I heard J.J. actually turned the job down first, and said he'd rather be in the audience. This only means that Disney wrote a really big number on a piece of paper, and slid it to him. He couldn't resist I guess. This is all about money, nothing more. I could see why it was necessary to make episodes I-III, but they still waited way too long to do them. Nowadays, I think almost all sequels are just paycheck movies. Transformers is a perfect example. I'm not saying that they are not good movies, but still, the fact remains, this all about money. I realize I'm stating the obvious, but I felt it needed to be said.
