I just watched the first four episodes of "The Handmaid's Tale,"
And the first thing I did was run to IMDB and go right to the user reviews section... Because I had a sinking feeling that it would be full of right wing crazies bitching about feminism, social justice warriors, snowflakes... etc.
To my chagrin the negative reviews were few and far between. There were a few though that thought this series was some newly instituted Hollywood agenda to attack the patriarchy....blah blah blah... None of which seemed to realize that the book was published in 1985.
But I digress...
This is a pretty damn good show. I haven't read the book, so I would like to hear from people that have. It's obviously updated to gel more with our modern times and technological advancements. The tone of the show is satisfyingly dark and grim. There is a dim monotony that I find perfectly suited to the story. It might be a tad slow paced for some, but the sparse dialogue is deliberate and meaningful.
If I do have a complaint, it's that they green-lit a second season almost immediately. I really wish that North America would take a cue from the Brits and know when to end on a high note. A mini-series is the perfect way to adapt a book and tell a compelling story. You shouldn't feel the need to bleed a concept dry in order to milk every dollar you can out of it.
Feminists will love it. Trump voters will hate it. Whatever. Throw the politics out the window because this is a damn good, well made fucking show.
