I would think that since you've included The Ventures, based mainly on musical influence...I would have thought you might have included at least a few of the following...and these are not really in order per se...that would require more thought than I'm capable of at the moment..

1. Chuck Berry...no guitarist has influenced modern rock guitar more...
2. Bo Diddley
3. T-Bone Walker
4. Muddy Waters
5. Link Wray
6. Albert King...my personal favorite guitar player, and a huge influence...especially on the big rock bands of the 60's and 70's....heck, Clapton mimicked him note for note on "Strange Brew" for example...
7. Roy Buchanan
8. Eddie Van Halen...unquestionably influenced a whole generation of modern metal guitarists...
9. Pete Townshend, as you mentioned Reverend...his use of power chords for rhythm influenced more bands than I can count...I only have ten fingers, after all...
10. Son House

I should have Jimi Hendrix and Les Paul in there somewhere...throw them in as ties somewhere, since we established at the beginning that's allowed...

Yeah, I happen to think the Boston Tea Party album is one of the best live albums I've ever heard...I got it back in the 80's as a bootleg, but you can get it as a regular CD these days...

This performance is pretty damn unbelievably awesome actually, and I'm being conservative here...a bit lengthy, but well worth the listen...

Never ever ever buy a guitar as to how it looks only as to how it feels and sounds. If you can play in finger style an F shape bar on the 7th fret (B) and add notes easily with your little finger on the 1st and 2nd strings because the action is so good buy that one. I had a go on a Tacoma the other day and it looked awful but was a dream to play in fact I could do things on it that I can't do on other guitars even very good ones.

To me, a good guitarist is not only about his skills ; I had a guitar teacher that could play any song performed by Jimi Hendrix just as well, still he didn't invent this style and therefore isn't a top world guitarist.

Here's my list, in no particular order, judging from skills, creativity, style, innovation, etc :

Thank you for mentioning Zakk Wilde, there is still hope. You can lose Ritchie Blackmore, Jimmy Paige, And Angus Young, Glenn Tipton off of that list. Talented guitarists but not worthy of top 10 status.

feel free to add in Joe Satriani and like Rik Emmet though. Well i was always kinda partial towards Rik Emmet so, maybe not. Better choice than Dimebag though.


There are way to many guitaists to take into consideration for this type of poll.

Eddie van halen smokes anyone that's been mentioned here. Just everything he has contributed throughtout his career has been astonishing and mind blowing.

Ok sorry, maybe he doesn't count for rock but if you listen to Angus Young, he comes across as more of a natural blues guitarist than a pure rock guitarist.


Back on the Van Halen kick, You will never see another guitarist that has been mimicked /copied more than Eddie Van Halen has been. What does that tell you? . / ! He's alown a renown innovator in the guitar world.

Yes, the legendary guitarist/inventer was a great guitar innovator but he was almost exclusively a jazz musician. the list I have drawn up probably doesn't agree with many but here goes in no particular order:

Hey, I made it. I'll also give an honourable mention to Harry Manx. He's blues-folk-world music rather than rock so I didn't include him, but he is fantastic.


I might need to amend mine. I've been listening Canadian roots rock duo Whitehorse a lot recently (new album) and Luke Doucet, who formed the group with his wife Melissa McLeland, is one hell of a guitar player. Not sure how well known he is outside Canada but look him or Whitehorse up on Youtube or your music service of choice and give it a whirl.
