OK, so I have written 3 stories so far. Two of the stories were connected to each other as one was a sequel to the other. My second story was a stand alone story about completely different characters. My dilemma is that many are wanting me to continue the paths of the characters in the two stories that are connected and many of you have asked for a sequel to my second story.

So....do I write

1) a third story about Kevin and Renee
2) a second story about Debbie, her best friend, Gary or some combination thereof; or
3) a completely new story with new characters and direction

I will be interested in your opinion.
Reese
Try a new story in a different category just to stretch your writing muscles, then come back for sequels to the other two.

I agree entirely. Often with sequels, you don't get so many readers either so it's a bit of a downer. Try something brand new and different.
This is what I do. If it works for you, great.

I open a new document and start to write. Sometimes I have no idea what's coming. If I stall after a couple of paragraphs I file it away and try something else later. I think in your shoes I would try each option. The story that writes itself will be your next story, not necessarily what others ask for.

Looks like we're in for a nasty spell of wether.

This is what I do too. Unfortunately, for the past 3 years, every story I start, stalls, and I start another, which also stalls, an on and on, ad infinitum. I now have 3 dozen stories started, none completed. Even when I go back to a previous story, I get blocked again. SO frustrating!

The last story I wrote that wrote itself was Arianrhod, and it got an EP.
everyone should write at least one tentacle sex story in their career, so that's my suggestion.

You can’t truly call yourself peaceful unless you are capable of violence. If you’re not capable of violence, you’re not peaceful. You’re harmless.

Thanks for taking my request so seriously.....this is what makes being on Lush, such a joke sometimes.

i am serious. i've been pushing people to write tentacle sex stories for ages. like Beth said, sometimes it's good to write out of your comfort zone, to push yourself as a writer. if you always write with what your comfortable with, your writing will come off as comfortable. with erotica, that's not always a good thing. challenge yourself and spice things up a bit. you may find that you enjoy, and are good at, writing what you might not have considered otherwise.

also, don't take yourself so seriously that you lose your sense of humor. it's makes for a drab and dull experience.

Write what you feel like writing about. If you have an idea that takes your story further then do so. If you try to write something that you don't want to write about it will show.

We all get ideas from many varied and different places and experiences. If an idea pops into my head then I start to write it is often easier than trying to force something as that becomes a chore and I either lose interest and do not continue the story or I rush it and the story does not turn out as good as I would wish.

What she said. I didn't really do sequels until I had been doing this for a couple years and even those early ones were generally standalones expanding one the characters rather than "continuing stories".

I doubt that anyone on Lush that has taken the time to get to know me would ever suggest I had lost my sense of humor. I just get annoyed when you try to have a serious conversation on Lush and some one that thinks the sun rises in there pants, seems to believe they can be glib about their responses. Lush reputations don't mean a hill of beans to me, I just try to get honest feedback so that I can write the kind of stories that people want to read. I had no intention of writing a sequel to my first story, but there were many that wanted to find out what happened next, so I felt like I owed them a second story. If they were kind enough to read my first story and offer their honest feedback, then I felt I owed it to them to give them what they wanted. It must have worked out alright, since the sequel earned a Recommended Read, despite some at Lush that tried to poison my effort.

In the future, if you don't have something real to say about my posts, I would appreciate it if you just kept your opinions to yourself.

Thank you
Reese
I just reread your story, "My Night with a Friend and Lover"

Both of your stories are begging for a sequel, but like it's been pointed out, sequels don't garner nearly the views or votes as the original.

That said, personally, I don't write for the views or votes (although it's nice) - I write what I want to, which has typically been fairly long novels (one of them actually did have an eventual ending, albeit maybe a temporary ending). I enjoy the long term romances, with lots and lots of character development along the way.

My suggestion to you is to do exactly that - write the story that's aching to come out, whether it's a new one or a sequel to one of your previous stories. It's going to be a given that people will love it - and probably beg for a sequel, no matter what it's about.

That's probably the best news I have heard all day. You may be able to "bully" some here at Lush with your snide comments but it doesn't play well here. Best you and I keep a wide berth from each other.
Please keep personal drama/arguments/accusations out of the forum because it makes everyone else UNCOMFORTABLE and derails threads.

But... but... I brought pie.

Reese, a few things:

Write what inspires you. If you feel like writing sequels, write sequels. Those characters are fresh in your mind and you may have visions of where you want to go with that story and those characters. Or, write something new, as others have suggested. Doesn't matter, but write what you want to write, for you and only you, and write what inspires you.

I don't publicly defend many, but I will now.

You were rude and unkind to Rachel. You've not been here that long; she has. She has helped so many, with so many things from writing, as per this thread, to serious life-and-death matters, and everything in between. If she posts on a thread, it means that she's interested in helping; interested in offering advice that we should all be grateful for and should listen to. Just because she sometimes uses humor to relay her message, does not invalidate her offering. Look for the subtext. Suggesting to write something out of your comfort zone is an essential exercise when one wants to improve their writing abilities. I too wrote a tentacle sex story several years ago (before it was a thing), then re-posted it when I returned. I think it's called Space Camping or something stupid like that. A tentacle sex story won a competition. Her comment was not out of line, and she has been consistent with that specific suggestion.

I'm not going to say that you owe her an apology, but I will say that you were way out-of-line. She may be a cat-loving, latex-wearing, skanky so-and-so from the Pacific Northwest, but she's our cat-loving, latex-wearing, skanky so-and-so from the Pacific Northwest. And we are privileged to have her on our side. You would better serve yourself as a budding writer and Lush community member if she was another arrow in your quiver. That does sound very sexual, doesn't it?

From one over-inflated ego to another, don't take yourself so seriously. At least, not publicly. We don't win Pulitzer's here. I've tried and tried, and I can't even get a top three finish in a competition, but I'll continue to try. So many haven't. But I'm not delusional. I can't write with the style, eloquence, and grace of a BrownCoffee or Fuzzyblue or Frank-Lee (his poems are amazing, btw) At some point, what I've written will hopefully resonate with the judges. But until then... I'll keep trying.

Reese, you did not need to start this thread. You could have just messaged your friends and/or writers that you respect. Most, if not all, would have responded. But rather, you chose to go public. Starting a thread is an invitation to everyone. So, please and thank you are apropos. As someone once shared with me after my son was born, they said that everyone has an opinion. Listen to everything and then incorporate what you feel works best for you. There is no need to dismiss comments, advice, or suggestions that you may feel are flippant or off topic. If you open your mind and look, you'll see that inspiration is everywhere. You can find something beneficial in everything.

When you get to the stage where Beffer and many others are, and I too have dozens of started but unfinished stories, you'll then have a whole different writing challenge. In the meantime, be nice to Sprite. She did not deserve your response. She was not rude to you. You should not have been rude to her.

Think on this: What's worse than getting feedback that you may not understand or agree with?

Not getting any feedback at all because people don't give a rat fuck about you.

Word.

I'm the guy who wrote a tentacle story that won a comp, and it grew out of sprite's suggestion, the same one she gave you. It stretched my writing muscles and made me a better writer. sprite was not making fun of you, she was trying to help you.

I wrrote two REALLY crappy tentacles stories before I wrote a good one. It took time and work and a couple of failures to learn how to do it right.

This is supposed to be a community of writers working together to help each other, not pull each other down.

I am genuinely sorry if you felt attacked. I do not think that was the intent.
Never ask the audience what they want. Give them what you want and make them like it.

This!
First, kudos to Ping. You said what was in my mind better than I could ever have. It was eloquent. Second, I'm sort of embarrased to ask this, but what the hell is a tentacle sex story?
Usually, when I personally see a story with "...chapter xxx" I scurry on by. I don't have time to read 12 stories to catch up. I much prefer one and done. The continuing sagas may be good, but after awhile they drag on and become unbelievable. A recent example, was an " " category story with a family that went to a reunion at a camp of some sort. The first 6-7 were gripping and fun, by 13 I was yawning and saying "Yeah, really, a 16 year old bangs 12 different people before lunch ". Not! Just my 2 cents, and apologies to the author, who really had it going for a while there.
