What do you think of Book Vending Machines?

I saw one for the first time this morning, in the faceless shopping centre up the road. I found it rather crass.

It was filled with books from authors I personally wouldn't read, with the price points from $20-$30, so it's obviously aimed at the passing trade / impulse buy / lower end of the market.

Would you buy / have you bought a book from a vending machine?

There are 2 good book shops within 10 minutes of this particular machine, and the centre is opposite a library.

Part of the appeal of buying a book in a proper book shop is the selection, you can skim read books you're interested in, enjoy the smell of the place and so on. Putting books in a vending machine makes me cringe for some reason.

Any thoughts?
It doesn't bother me as much as electronic books do. I would rather buy a regular book at a vending machine, than have to power up an e-reader, load up the book, and lug it around. I shouldn't have to buy batteries or plug something in to read a book. A regular book I can hold in my hands is preferable to me.

I might see a title in that machine that I've always wanted to read, for example.
It doesn't bother me either. If you're heading to the beach or some appointment where you might be waiting and forgot your book, then it's a good idea to grab something quick and easy. Maybe it's for the person in a hurry that doesn't have the time for the book store or library. After seeing some of the vending machines in Japan this doesn't bother me a bit.
I'm with Rocco. I hate the idea of e-readers and e-books. I like the feel and touch of a book that I can curl up with, touch, smell.
I can't stand the idea of e-books, either. I want a real book, with words on paper that some politically-correct entity can't come and edit a few years down the line.

Back on the original topic, I'd imagine the titles in a book vending machine would be the same mass-appeal books you would fine at a drug store or bus station book shelf, so I can't imagine that I'd be buying them. That said, I'm fine with the idea. Anything that keeps the publishing industry chugging along is fine with me. Heck, at this point, anything that helps keep ANY industry in business is a good thing.
I have never seen one...but i think it would be interesting to see..

Eh it wouldn't bother me so much now I am with Chef and Rocco about the Ereaders those I will pass on there is just something about holding an old fashioned paper book.
It just threw me I think, they were lined up like candy bars, I felt it cheapened them somewhat. Plus they'll get damaged dropping down 5 feet to the bottom.

Maybe I take books and the writing process too seriously.

Doesn't really bother me...though, if there is a book store ten minutes away...what is the point?
I'm with the rest on the e-book thingy...what if you get to a good spot and your battery dies???

Hey Chef...I heard you can buy just about anything in a vending machine in Japan...any truth to that? Sounds like a story there...

You know you want it, you know you need it bad...get it now on Amazon.com...

I've been to Japan several times (business / skiing holiday), it's true.

I have seen vending machines for:

Beer
Cigarettes
Manga comic books
Porn
School girl's used underwear (!)
CD's

Books in a vending machine doesn't bother me. I think it is an interesting idea actually.

And I must be the only person who thinks eReaders are nice. The newer Kindle has a fantastic battery life, upwards of two weeks if you turn off the wifi, under moderate use. But it does have features like a backlight that will shorten that life. So a battery running out on you would only happen if you didn't plan ahead. And you can carry around a fairly large amount of content.

I would buy one if they had a book vending machine at the train station; that would be cool haha.

In the glass reflection is that you Nic and your partner hee hee LOL
Book vending machine or e-book? cool ideas, wish I'd thought of them.

I love grabbing novels and reading material online, storing them to a flash mem chip and then reading them on the boat out in the middle of the cove, behind sunglasses - while surreptitiously scoping out the latest bikini models.

Too true. The subway one didn't surprise me as Washington D.C. has them there for the Metro too. Pacninko can be addicting. Just sayin. I don't think there's anything you can't buy in a vending machine.

That's what sunglasses where invented for, then if you like the guy you take them off and look more
Hmm, have not seen one of these yet. I'm thinking I wouldn't be bothered by it either. That being said, I don't think I'd opt to purchase a book from one. I'm with you on the whole thing about actually walking around in a bookstore (used or well-known chain) perusing different titles and being able to leaf through the pages and skim over the story a bit, before I decide on what I want to purchase at the time.

On that note, I'll be leaving for work a bit early today so I'll have time to pop in the bookstore, as one of my favorite erotica authors' next book in her series has come out...woohoo!

That other post up there though, 'school girl's used underwear', I'm sorry but WTF??!! lol. People will try to sell anything???
It seems wrong. I have an e-reader and I like it but I agree it is not the same as the feel and smell of a book.
