When it gets late, and my mind is getting sleepy, can you still get some writing done? I still try my best, but it does bring on a toll onto my creative juices. Besides drinking caffeine, does anyone have any tricks on the subject?
Absolutely not.
I close my eyes to visualize when I'm writing, and if I'm tired, I start nodding off as soon as I do.
Sometimes my mind wanders somewhere off in left field when it happens and provides something I can jot down for later use, but as far as getting words on "paper"...
Yeah, that ain't happening.
I do my best writing late at night, usually going to about midnight, sometimes a few hours past if I'm trying to finish a story off. I only down tools because my wife nags me to come to bed. I actually find the process of writing exciting, and I can't get to sleep for hours after I stop.
Of course, by that stage, she's punishing me, and I'm left to my own devices...
My latest story is a racy little piece about what happens when someone cute from work invites you over to watch Netflix and Chill. My brain switches off when I'm tired. I am an early morning person and do my best writing when I'm fresh. I will often lay in bed with lots of ideas running around my head though. Sometimes I will write a whole poem in my mind while trying to sleep; in the morning I try to capture it again if I can.
I am a morning person for sure. Once I get tired, I find I can spend an hour over a single paragraph and not get it going where I want. That's one of the things that has been slowing down my production. Most of the time, my opportunities to write are in the evening when I am starting to get weary.
I can't write stories but I can write poetry.
LOL...
Just to prove a point: I didn't have my first coffee of the day when I read this title, and what reached my eyes was "Can you still write when you are tied?" To which the answer is obviously "that depends." ;)
From time to time, I like writing when I'm really tired. My mind then has a tendency to take all kinds of shortcuts and comes up with the most outrageous ideas. Though editing those texts is a nightmare. Misspelled words tend to be the least of my worries, as I end up with lots of completely nonsensical word swaps, sentence fragments that make me scratch my head and generous amounts of "false friends". So, all in all, it's a good trick to get fresh ideas, but I'd go crazy over fixing up my texts if I did it regularly.
It's hard to get going but once I get into a story I feel so alive and writing comes naturally. Some days I can be totally alert yet can't write a sentence. It just depends on my mood and determination.
My body gives up before my brain stops. The words are still flowing out of my head but they stop appearing on the screen as my fingers go on strike - not that I notice as my eyes are closed ;-)
I get some of my best ideas when I'm in bed, trying to sleep. But, to sit and actually write when I'm tired is hard to do. I just have to hope I remember them in the morning.
