Do you ever just write, and not have an idea in mind for it?

I've written from outlines, in fact I have several skeletons lying around for stories that I've started but not finished. The stories most enjoyable to write evolved without outlines, from scenes that I tied together later.

Usually I have an idea first, with the main character drawn from real life - either people I know, or random strangers I've seen in bars or cafés usually. Then, once I've put that character into the situation I've thought up first, I just let the story flow from there. I have no idea where it comes from and when I read some of my early stories again months or years later I find myself thinking: 'Really? I wrote that? Awesome!' lol
