Sharing one's work on this site should not be considered an invitation to be judged. Are you f**king serious? Have you looked at the layout of the pages? The emphasis placed upon rankings and ratings and comments? The signature-banners screaming out to read and vote? The frequency of posts related in some way to the issue of ranking and rating and feedback? The entire story posting section of this site is about being judged and rated.

It's not a lack of class or consideration to be harsh on someone's story if it's deserved. It's a sign of the absurd society in which we llive that praise may be heaped in public, but the criticism must be hidden from sight, lest the criticiser be deemed an inconsiderate ogre. And if you think that one typo makes me a shitty writer, you have every right to express that opinion publicly. The other readers can look at the rest of the words I have laid down in this forum and decide for themselves whether the omission of an "e" from "deserve" - or any other of the similar types of errors I occasionally make - impairs my ability to express myself in a coherent manner.

I am completely f**king serious. I never say what I don't mean. I just didn't realize that you were a professional literary critic. My sincere apologies if my pointing out a typo of yours touched a nerve. I never said that one shouldn't be free to express one's opinion of a story, regardless of politically correct standards of constraint on dissent. Do not for one moment try to interpret my humble opinion in such an inaccurate manner. I am merely suggesting that criticism need not take the form of rude commentary. I think feedback is a marvelous thing, provided it is meant for the purpose of providing feedback and not to pounce on a writer who was brave enough to post a story.

How can you honestly say that posting a story here is not an invitation to be judged? It's just to share... bullshit. If it were just to share, there would be no ratings system, no listing of the highest-rated authors for the month... none of that has anything to do with sharing.

Why is it "brave" to post a story? If the story is as poorly written as the one DB linked to above, it's not brave, it's just stupid. Whoever wrote that - and I hesitate to call him an author - is not brave for showing the rest of the site that he has no writing ability whatsoever. Nor is it out if place to tell him so.

I don't advocate just randomly pouncing on stories that you don't like. Not everybody likes everything. But if a story is just poorly done, then by all means, pounce away. There is not always a need to offer constructive criticism... you cannot construct something when there is no foundation upon which to base it.

And you need not apologise to me. Are you not simply attempting to treat me in the same manner that I advocate treating people whom you believe to be shit writers? By highlighting my typo the way you did, you were attempting to call into question the validity of my statements, the same way you did with your sarcastic statement about my literary criticism profession. I would like to thank you for doing so. In those actions, you demonstrated the very behaviour that you appear to be condemning - pouncing in an ad hominem attack rather than saying anything constructive about the substance of the work at hand.

As an aside, I don't know whether you care or not, but I actually do have a degree in critical literary theory, although I'm no longer pursuing that field. I am glad to see it's paid off for me, debating fuck-your-mother stories with people who are afraid to say what they really think, because someone's feelings might get hurt.
Boys and thier toys I tell ya......well when you guys finish your measuring contest let me know.....LOL!.....

As for the comment I think it was a fair one the member expressed themselves in a tactful yet direct way and I see nothing wrong with that. Now if you think the writing is shit then yeah it was better you didn't comment Durrasch......wow please tell me you do not work in the teaching field......

"Love all, trust a few, and do wrong to none."
Durrasch have you ever heard of the phrase..."If you have nothing good to say then its better to say nothing".....I suggest you consider it.

So let me get this right you are saying that you do not advocate "randomly pouncing on stories that you don't like" because you see a logical reason not to do it. So then you state that you do see a reason to pounce on someone who has not written a story well?.... For what purpose?....To further make them feel like they can't write and kill whatever enthusiam they had to post a story to begin with?..Who and what gives you the right to criticize someone to that degree?......Yeah that is awesome advice let's just humiliate them and discourage them from ever posting again. Why don't you just let us do our job and let us be in charge of giving constructive criticism or not. You just go on and continue being on your high horse llama thing pointing out people's flaws and such but not really offering any real solution for anything. You seem to like to complain and criticize for the sake of doing so.......so I say enjoy yourself because you do it well.

Since you were so hungry for intelligent debate a while ago, and brought the idea of logical reasoning into this, I must point out that there is a flaw with your reasoning. I say don't pounce, because there is a logical reason not to pounce. You cannot from that premise jump to the conclusion that in order to pounce, there must be a logical reason to pounce. All that my statement implies, at best, is that what is needed to justify pouncing is the absence of a logical reason not to pounce, which is not the same thing as a logical reason to pounce. No logical reason not to pounce, then pounce away. And I have yet to see a logical reason not to pounce on shit writing.

To what purpose? Thinning the herd. There are far too many writers here who think they are entitled to be told that they are brilliant, patted on the back for being oh so very brave in facing the scary monsters and putting their adorable little creations out in the light fr the world to see and admire. In reality, there are a few decent writers here, and a very small number of pretty good writers. Unfortunately, they are very hard to find due to the sheer piles of shit through one must wade to get to them.

It is one thing to produce decently-written stories that simply do not appeal to a person's taste. But why should we be subjected to the absolute crap the likes of which DB linked us to earlier? And furthermore, if something is shit, why should I have to refrain from saying so, simply because the talentless douche wants to put his "art" on display? And if they can't write... as that guy clearly can't... why shouldn't they be discouraged from posting more stories? The mods certainly don't seem to give much attention to the medium... as long as there's no goats or kids under 16, then pretty much any random assortment of words and broken syntax will suffice.

Tell me something, Zafia. Why should I NOT have the right to criticise someone to that degree? Why is that a right I must be given - which actually renders it not a right, but a privilege - and not a right that I inherently hold?

And I will say to you the same thing I said to Tech earlier. Thank you for demonstrating the very behaviour you seek to condemn, attacking me and the llama I rode in on. Hypocrisy is a wonderful thing, isn't it?

And I will now return to your very first statement. It is almost never better to say nothing. Silence in the face of adversity is the surest way to guarantee that the oppression will increase.
I would not call an intelligent debate this demonstration of arguing in a circle you apparently do so well, did you go to school for that? or does it just come natural?

Attack you?.....Believe me you would not be able to write if I did that.... but I will do something for you D...let me talk to Nic about offering you Political Asylum in the Forum so you can feel safe from Tech and I.....now tell me who's lookin out for you sweetie?

In summation.....again we will agree to disagree as we ALWAYS do......but just remember.....

This is perhaps the funniest thing I've ever read in these forums.

I do enjoy your banter Durrasch.

You guys need to lighten up a bit, this is an erotic stories site, nothing more. It's meant to titillate and entertain.

In an effort to help DB keep this thread going....I am going to say that if you think what I did was pounce on you, you are way too thin skinned and are in way over your head. Stop taking yourself so damn seriously and realize this site is for entertainment purposes. I was merely expressing my views when you pounced on me with vulgarity. I don't debate fuck-your-mother stories by the way. I don't read stories as they are not my cup of tea. I feel no need to read a story that I know I won't enjoy. But life's too short for me to be so audacious as to think it is my duty to criticize other writers, despite my four college degrees and years of experience teaching English. This is one area of my life where I prefer to put down the red pen and just enjoy the stories I like and pass over the ones I do not.

I find it interesting that a so-called expert in literature hasn't submitted one story in here.

Now wait a sec. Being an expert in literature and being an author is 2 different things.
I've talked to several published authors who would scoff at the idea that they are experts in anything.

It's really late and it's been a long week, so I'll get around to answering the girls tomorrow, but this is too much fun to pass up.

1) I never said I was an expert in literature. I said I have a degree in literary theory. I also said I no longer practice in that field. I also have degrees in political economy and peace and conflict studies. It doesn't necessarily make me an across-the-board subject matter expert in those fields. Why try and make assertions based on falsehood? Is it because you have no sensible response to anything I have said? [My guess is that you would have copped out and claimed that nothing I have said deserves any kind of sensible response, but now that I have inserted this aside, you probably will not do that.]

2) Supposing I did decide to claim "expert" status in literary criticism, would my credibility really be judged by the volume of fuckstory fiction that I could produce? Literary criticism and writing are two distinct fields. Related yes, but absolutely distinct from one another. Many people do both, but the capacity to do one is neither reliant upon nor indicative of skill in the other. If you don't know that, I'd say you're probably a shit judge of literary credibility.

I am glad you enjoyed it, Nicola. As to lightening up, though, I think this is all perfectly light and fun. I'm waiting for someone to put some effort into opposing my argument rather than just telling me that they will not say what they really think because I couldn't handle it. Although I must say that I am oh so very afraid. *shiver*

What are you exactly "arguing" about? I lost track a little in all the rambling.

I thought you merely wanted an answer to your original question?

Q. What's the acceptable protocol here for telling someone a story is just bad?

A. If it's constructive criticism, by all means, leave comments in the comment box. If you really want to go into detail, then obviously a PM is going to be required.

Telling someone their story is just "shit" in the comments section, and giving no explanation as to why, is helpful to no-one whatsoever, and is purely inflammatory.

As long as people treat each other with the same level of respect that they would wish to receive, then it's not going to be a big issue.

A) Oddly enough, I don't feel at all as if I am in over my head. I feel kind of like I'm in the kiddie pool, to be honest. All I hear is a bunch of garbage about playing nicely with others, and making sure that no one gets offended, mixed in with the occasional forum equivalent of "don't make me come over there" as a couple of people keep saying that I could never handle the full force of their intellects, which are apparently yet to be demonstrated.

2) Yeah I take myself pretty seriously. I also take any "constructive criticism" I might give pretty seriously. I think I owe that to any writer who is deserving of constructive comments. There is no point to tell a writer that their story is flawless, as I just read on a very good story. It wasn't flawless, so saying it was is an insult to a person who could well be a very good writer.

iii) Do you really only do the things that you have a duty to do? Nothing else? Nothing that you feel you have a right to do? Nothing you have the privilege to do? Nothing you can do, but only what you must do? What does the duty to criticise have to do with the right to criticise?

Demonstrate the tautology, please. I'm curious to see you do so, Zaf.

I don't recall applying for political asylum. I am waiting for the full demonic force of your rhetorical might. Although "let me talk to Nic" sounds a little bit like "I'm telling my Mommy about you." No wonder I feel like I'm in the kiddie pool, I guess.

I have a question that was prompted by but is unrelated to Monocle's thread on giving thanks.

What's the acceptable protocol here for telling someone a story is just bad? No offense to anyone, but it happens. Personally, if someone hates something I write, I'd want to hear it in full-on brutal honesty. Do most of you want to hear when someone has negative feedback?

Since this was the question YOU asked, this is the question I will address:

I don't know if there is any engraved-in-stone protocol, but in general this group tends to give feedback in a constructive manner. If you feel the need to be brutally honest, the people here (with whom I am acquainted) tend to prefer a private message. If this is not acceptable to you, please feel free to go elsewhere. It may not be how you operate, but in this kiddie pool, sandbox, or whatever you wish to call it, we prefer to play nice. So if you are TRULY interested in following acceptable protocol, play nice or take your toys and go home.

My mother, the most intelligent woman I ever had the pleasure of knowing, said once to me, "Katarina, having an opinion is not an excuse for poor manners."

Durrasch, you certainly have the "right" to speak your mind, just don't be surprised if you rub people the wrong way in the process. But you already knew that.

Indeed, that was the question I asked to start the thread. And the only thing I had to say about the response I got was that I found it ironic that while the consensus was to rstrict negative feedback to PMs, the stories most likely to elicit negative feedback - those being scored a 0 - were the only ones that required a public comment.

A quick glance back through the pages will show that the most recent tangent was started when Rocco made the ridiculous assertion that posting a story on these pages somehow entitles one to be instantly respected as a writer, a point with which I disagreed, just as I would have disagreed face to face on the matter.

Since I'm talking about irony I'd like to thank you for the most recent bout of it, Tech. Not so long ago you seemed to take great exception to a suggestion I made that the only opinion you found acceptable was one which conformed to your butterlies-and-lollipops everybody-gets-a-medal norms of behaviour. You got very defensive, stressing the openmindedness of your own worldview. Now, however, you have invited me to either conform or get out. How very accepting of an opposing opinion! Did your Ma also tell you to try and silence the people with whom you disagree?

As to rubbing people the wrong way, I don't give a flying fuck at a rolling donut whether anyone here likes me or not. I'll point out, though, that while I have had PMs from several people telling me that they enjoyed reading this thread, or telling me that they agree that the feedback on this site is far too undeservedly positive, I have had very little negative feedback about the thread.
