Overcomplicated over-complicated over complicated - which is correct and why?

I think since you're modifying the word 'complicated', a hyphen should be attached.

Over-complicated looks right to me.

The two words form a phrase together. "Over" modifies the "complicated".

This is similar to me staring at words too long and convincing myself they are spelt incorrectly. Too much cooking with aluminium pots, and cups of earl grey probably.

Just because I'm a bit of a geek! I had to go check, according to the 2009 3rd edition draft of the Oxford English Dictionary, over-complicated is the correct version.

and yes, that the title of OED's finest is decidedly over-complicated.
